Info Wanted: What is the best source for the 1984 TV broadcast "intro & outro"?
Time

As you all (probably) know, the first time Star Wars was shown on US TV in 1984, it started with a special intro by Mark Hamill. It included some interviews with the fans, shots from all over the world. After the movie Mark Hamill narrated the special ending, which included shots from the “Making of” documentary.

I am searching for the BEST copy - that means the best quality and the longest cut. I have 2 versions - one is from the full broadcast recording. That unfortunately has really bad quality and is very badly compressed to mpg2 - if I remember correctly the complete ~3 (? 4?) hours broadcast was fit into 1 single layer DVD.

The second version is from one of the OCP DVDs. I think it has slightly better quality, but it still sucks. And it’s edited differently.

Any idea what’s the best copy out there? The reason why I’m asking this is that I’m planning to merge it to Harmy’s cut for myself 😃

Harmy's STAR WARS Respecialized Edition '97 - AVCHD and MKV Released
Time

Why are you trying to make a Blu-ray from the mkv ??? Why don't you download it (AVCHD) ? The aspect ratio is wrong, the mkv is cropped and not 16:9. So you have to use some software first which will re-create the black borders but again I see no reason to do so, I think it's really better to download the AVCHD

Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)

Hey, I'm currently getting the MKV  V2.5, and I noticed it says it has the mono mix. Is that the original one with the different voice for Aunt Beru? Also, the mkv file is 17.9 gb, this may be a question that was answered earlier but there's almost 500 pages so I don't think I could effectively search for it, but is there a way to decrease the size of the file by getting rid of the different language audio tracks, if so, how? The answer may be a bit obvious, but I'm not very knowledgeable about such things :)

Yes, that's the one mono mix.

Yes, the size of the mkv can be obviously decreased by throwing out streams you don't need. Just download mkvtoolnix and mkvmergegui and do this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uabfq_Wtn6U

Fellow Trekkies, I've got a question - and I REALLY hope I didn't ask it on this forum a few years ago (I know I asked it on SOME forum :-) )

I am planning to start re-watching Star Trek from scratch.

I do have a chronological list of all episodes and movies, all from ENT, TOS, TAS, TNG, DS9, VOY and the movies of course. Now I want more.

I want to add more stuff to the chronological list

- novels

- comic books

- computer games

The only Star Trek related novels I read were the novelizations of the movies and a merge of a couple of TOS episodes. However I KNOW that there are some novels which are describing the events after Enterprise, or the adventures of Captain Riker's ship, or there are some Khan stories ... If I remember correctly there were novels about the Romulan war?

Comic books - the ONLY Trek comic books I read are the prequels to JJ's movies - and those are MUCH better than the JJ movies :-) But there are some 50 years of comic books going on ... I forgot - I read also Year Four from D.C.Fontana and I LOVED it, unfortunately it ended with an open ending.

Computer games - I played the prequel to Into Darkness, and the 25th anniversary game many years ago. Only now thanks to YouTube I found games like Klingon Academy and Starfleet Academy and I was shocked that these games feature actually "short movies" with the original cast members. Are there more of those?

Well I know I'm talking about 50 years of comic books and novels, I'm sure that there are MANY different books, and I'm pretty sure many of them will contradict each other. I'm not really interested in reading ALL of them, just stories, which are considered "canon" - at least by the fans. Stories, which somehow expand the "universe" of Star Trek - stuff like the comic book series Year Four, which is basically year 4 of TOS. Or the novels which take place after Enterprise. Or the "Shatnerverse" novels - wherever they belong.

The same with video games - I don't want to play EVERYTHING - I'm pretty sure that most of the games wouldn't even run on Windows 8, I just want to play games which somehow "expand the timeline" - I hope at least somebody understands what I'm trying to say :-) Fine examples are Klingon Academy which explains why Chang has an eye patch in Star Trek 6, or the Star Trek game which takes place between JJTrek09 and Into Darkness.

If somebody understood what am trying to achieve, could you guys give me a hint which video games/novels/comic books are "recommended" for a guy who wants an "ultimate chronological Trek experience"? Also on which place do they belong on the timeline?

Thanks

Lord of the Rings Trilogy - Extended Edition coming to Blu-Ray

Apparently Peter Jackson said/joked at Comic Con that he's considering adding a few scenes to the LotR trilogy for the eventual Complete Middle Earth Set. Extended Extended Edition?

He said a similar thing a few years ago, when the first Hobbit was announced. But the new scenes shouldn't be added to the films, but shown as bonus features

Nothing on that site works....on Chrome or firefox.

Unfortunately Russ used ActiveX for calling Windows Media Player. It works ONLY on IE. On other browsers you have to check the source code to get the path to the mp3 file

1) Data is not "just software" - an android is something absolutely different than just software

2) There is no chance that you can create an intelligent hologram. A hologram which will be able to KNOW he/she/it is a hologram. A hologram which will be able to correctly react to ANY situation. It's just NOT possible. Not even theoretically. That's the problem. The Doctor was "too perfect" to be real. His reaction most of the time should be "I am not programmed to correctly reply to your question". That has absolutely nothing to do with science fiction, it's just fiction, more precisely a fairytale.

Do you remember the Minuete (? - sorry I can't really remember the correct spelling of her name) character from the Bynar episode from TNG's first season? She was programmed to seduce men, especially Riker and she was GREAT at it. BUT ... when they tried to get any other information from her, her response was something like "I don't know, it's not a part of my programming" - and that is absolutely CORRECT and absolutely BELIEVABLE. The Doctor however was able to react to ANY situation, which is just impossible. Not "impossible NOW", simply IMPOSSIBLE.

Jazz - well, everybody likes different music and different historical eras, that's absolutely normal. But as I said I can't stand songs in movies or TV shows. Vic was singing, that means in my view he was wasting my time. Simple as that.

Well why don't I like Vic? I've been thinking about it and these are some of the conclusions I came up with

- singing - I hate singing in movies. Or TV shows. If I'm at home I always try to find the "fast forward" or "next chapter" buttons on my remote. I have nothing against songs or music in general, I just feel they don't belong into "normal" movies & shows - they belong to musicals

- jazz in general - maybe if he would sing something of the 350 genres I like, I would be able to at least tolerate him.

- his "bar" or what is the correct term - it seems to me like a bad version of Quark's bar. I love Quark's bar, that was a very interesting and funny place. The holographic "jazz club" isn't. Why is it even there?

- why do they have 2 bars? Seriously from a story telling point of view, what sense does it make? There was just one episode I can remember LIKING which had the holographic club in it, and that was the "Ocean's eleven" type of episode where they stole money from the new owner

Some of you have suggested I have something against inteligent holograms. Well I started to think about all intelligent holograms which were in the franchise starting with Minnuet (or whatever the spelling is) in the Bynar episode of TNG, and ending with Robert Picardo's doctor, and I really wanted to write you a list of intelligent holograms I like. And then I realised the list is empty. Yes, I don't like ANY intelligent hologram they used on "modern" Star Trek. I don't really know why, maybe it's a sort of a "professional deformation" - I know what it's possible to program and what not. And if I can't BELIEVE a character, I can't LIKE the character. I can't actually get any emotional involvement with the character, so episodes like when the doctor wanted to fight for rights of other holograms - WTF?
