Seems weird to compare the droids in Star Wars to coffee makers (especially this one who has an unusually high degree of sentience).

Both are tools created for making people’s lives easier. Our house technologies are getting “smarter” every year, I have no doubt they will one day have the full “real” intelligence, that still won’t make them “slaves”. If they wanted this movie to have a “message” (to be clear, I am not suggesting they SHOULD put a message inside), maybe they could use the wookiees for it?

Seems like the kind of thing someone who’s never seen any of these movies before would say.

My mother would disagree 😃 She used to think I am watching these types of things way too much when I was a kid.

This is all much ado about nothing.

I fully agree. I’m not saying it’s a thing which would kill the movie for me or anything like that, I’m just saying that they took a very serious matter and handled it in a way which I consider to be disrespectful. And not even really funny.

That aspect of her character is played almost entirely for laughs.
Exactly. That’s why I don’t like it. Plus I didn’t find it funny. That’s the worst combination.

If anything they didn’t take the matter seriously enough.

There are 2 ways how to touch this subject matter - either do it absolutely seriously (like The Measure of a Man), or go completely silly. They tried to go completely silly, but at the same time they tried to make us honestly like the character and have an emotional reaction when she gets destroyed. That’s why her character doesn’t work FOR ME.

You guys really believe that the droid was supposed to be an SJW parody even when it was created by a man who thinks it’s a good idea from a commercial point of view to talk about the sexuality of one of the characters during the film’s promotion?

The “problem” with the “slavery is bad” point of view is that we talk about MACHINES. AKA tools. My computer doesn’t have human rights. My fridge doesn’t have human rights. The coffee machine which created the coffee I am drinking right now is not my SLAVE, it’s a tool which was created for making my life slightly easier. Star Trek did it correctly - I guess most of you (or maybe even everybody) has seen The Measure of a Man, the writer was so much smarter than Kasdan Jr. She gave questions, but no answers. I miss subtleties in current scripts.

Why does every SW movie have to have the stakes of ANH? Or of any other SW movie that came before it?

This was the first SW movie with low stakes and I’m not sure why that’s a bad thing.

The fact that the movie didn’t have a giant ball of death which shoots planet destroying laser beams was one of the best things about this movie

The Last Jedi deprecation thread

The Last Jedi gets better the more you watch it, so that’s the opposite of depreciation. I think one of the Praetorian Guards was decapitated, but I don’t think it needs a thread.

And if I can’t force myself into watching the movie for the second time? I mean I watch the prequels almost every year, but I really hate the idea of watching TLJ for a second time.

There seems to be a trend here.

  • If you liked TLJ, you didn’t like SOLO.

  • If you disliked TLJ, you liked SOLO.

Only a Sith deals in absolutes, of course, so there’s going to be some people who hate and like both, but I’ve a feeling it’s going to mostly correspond with what I’ve posted above.

I was disgusted by the politics in TLJ, but liked how the movie looked. I was confused by Solo, I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. There were PARTS of the movie I really enjoyed and parts of the movie I absolutely hated.

I just came home. What a mess.
Some OK bits, some good bits, some horrible bits. The funny thing is that I thought to myself “well, at least they’re completely ignoring the Jedi, Skywalkers, Death Star, Sith and so on”, when suddenly … Darth Maul. God-dammit! Also, why did they have to spend so much time explaining that Lando is in a sexual relationship with a droid? What emotions was I supposed to feel? The revolutionary communist droid thankfully died, yet they played it like it’s a bad thing? What a strange movie, it was. It repeated so many problems from the prequels, like bad cinematography, bad green screen, bad dialogue, annoying characters (the fembot is the new Jar Jar), and especially - no tone. They tried to invoke so many different feelings at the same time, but the only feeling I felt was confusion. Weird, weird, weird movie. At least I didn’t feel like punching somebody after leaving the cinema, unlike after TLJ, so I guess I liked it more?

BTW there were 12 people in the cinema. Twelve. TWELVE.

Funny, I’m at work right now so I can’t post any screenshots but there is a chance that it was caused by XBMC or my TV? Weird that it was doing that only in that one scene, but since I am the only person who reported it the problem is probably on my side. So thanks again for your hard work guys, it’s much better than the SSE and this comes from a person who LOVES the SSE 😃

Your TV could be doing temporal processing if you have it playing at 120 fps, etc

Yes. Always make sure kodi switches the refresh rate of your display.

That option is right next to one that conforms the media to the refresh rate. Make sure that isn’t pressed.

And if your program is still called Xbmc instead of kodi, update it. 😃

No, thanks. There is a reason why I am still using XBMC 😃 They broke the m3u video playlists, which I unfortunately need and I haven’t found an alternative (yet).

I’m just watching the 1080p version from myspleen right now and I absolutely love what I’ve seen so far.Great work guys!
But … is it really a non-DNVR version? I have noticed one weird shot - when the stormtroopers attack Tantive IV and are rushing through the whole in the door - it really looks like every trooper leaves a trail of himself while he moves, like that shot went through an extensive temporal denoising.
