The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I just came from the movie theatre. I hated TFA less than any of the prequels. Unfortunately I have no idea what the movie was about. Not sure if it’s because I’ve seen a dubbed version and something was lost in the translation, but I seriously can’t understand what did I just watch.

  • What was the New Order? Who exactly are they and what’s they’re position in the movie Universe? Are they at the same level as the Empire? I though so at the beginning, but then they say something about a New Republic. So what are they - some kind of a cult? Because they seem to have lots of resources and a good military. Can anybody please explain me what are the positions of the New Order and the New Republic in the “chain of command” of the universe?

  • Who are now the stormtroopers? OK, they’re definitely no longer the clones of that Australian guy, because our hero is a black guy. So are they volunteerly in the army? So why did the guy desert his army? And I noticed they actually mentioned clone troopers but again - who’s the army of the picture?

  • What was the BFG of the movie? You know, the new Death Star? Was it a planet? Or a big space station? Because it had trees and stuff. And aparently its own atmosphere.

  • Also - why was the new Death Star in the movie? It was stupid, pointless and had nothing to do with the story, it feels like the only reason they put it to the story was so that they can blow it up and have a “cool” action sequence.

  • Who was the story villain? Were it the uniform guys? Or was that just one uniform guy? Cause one of them seemed really important, he yelled at the stormtroopers in the trailer shot. ANd there was also one uniform guy who reported to the CG guy together with the Vader wannabe. Or was the Vader wannabe the villain ? I guess so, cause he killed Han Solo. Also, should it be a great reveal that he’s Han and Leia’s son? If so, why did they tell it in the beginning in the discussion between the CG guy and the DV wannabe? Or is the villain the CG guy? I thought that Abrams and Kasdan know that “less is more”.

  • Was Chewie CG? Seriously, every time he was on screen I could only thing about the fact that he looks CG.

  • What relationship should the girl and the black guy have? They have absolutely no chemistry together, but suddenly they hug and kiss. Should they be in love or just friends?

My impressions : the first part of the movie, when it’s a mix of 2 personal stories of a guy who doesn’t want to kill people and a girl who is trying to make some money so that she can buy food is really, really good. The second part of the movie, when it’s a story about trying to run away from the New Order and find Luke Skywalker is really good. Then it suddenly feels like we switched to a poorly executed fan remake of the Death Star battle, this part is a horrible mess and I’m not sure what it was about.

So I don’t know, I’m glad I’ve seen it but I don’t really know if I want to see it again.

PS BB8 was GREAT !

New To Star Wars Plz Help - watching Star Wars with my young son...
Time

Watch the original trilogy (preferably original versions). Then, if you both will like the stories, you can watch the prequels (if you really want to). If you still won’t have enough, I recommend to watch the Clone Wars and Rebels cartoons. And as the last thing (if you will still want) you should watch the Droids and Ewoks cartoons from the 80’s, and maybe even the Ewok movies if you’re really desperate.

Were the seps misaligned or just missing a color layer?

I have heard of other restorations where either a layer was missing or was accidentally duplicated.

Is this why we have so much more dirt and grain than what was originally exhibited in 1977.  Because they did a bad job?

At 51:20 :

…Lucas says he went to Poland and Czechoslovakia to retrieve prints.

In other words huge chunks of the special edition are based off 35mm release prints.

Having watched the 2011 bluray  upscaled to 4K it easy to determine 1st generation negs from dupe stocks.

The discrepancies have been equalized by DNR.

Wow, Lucas went to a country which stopped existing in 1992? 😃
Sorry, I couldn’t resist

<strong>Despecialized Editions</strong> by Harmy : Index of 'How-To's &amp; Help' Threads | Index of 'General Despecialized Threads' | ‘Where are they? And how do I get them?’ mega-merge thread...

Why are you afraid of malware? You can’t get any malware by downloading a mkv file (or an ISO file if you’re trying to get the AVCHD or the DVD version). If you’re afraid of some harmful ads on the torrent tracker site you want to use, just don’t click on them 😃 Or even better use a browser which has an ad blocker, e.g. Firefox with the AdBlock addon.

There are 2 alternatives how to get it

  1. torrent
  2. downloading the parts from some file server (I think it’s on uloz.to and maybe even on mega.nz if my memory still works), and extract them.

Automatically matching the color of one video source to another.
Time

I’m assuming you’re on windows.

  1. Install AviSynth ( http://avisynth.nl/index.php/Main_Page )
  2. Install the ColourLike plugin ( http://www.avisynth.nl/users/warpenterprises/files/colourlike_5F25_dll_20050825.zip )
  3. Write scripts for both of your videos, try to make them as similar as possible (framerate, cropping etc.)
  4. Write the histogram for the original file
  5. Read the histogram created in step 4 in the script for your “second” video

Check this thread for longer explanation of usage of Colourlike http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=96308
And of course the first video is the one you’re taking the colour information from, the second video is the one you’re trying to have the same colors as the first one.

Screen capture software ?
Time

Any tips for a GOOD screen capture software ? Which means no ezvid or similar crap ?

Requirements :

  • record in a “normal” fps (no 5fps or 15fps crap)

  • work on Windows 8.1

  • ability to record audio which is playing on the computer and from an external source, e.g. a microphone

  • recording in FullHD

  • outputs an editable video file (e.g. avi)

  • I’d prefer free software or at least fully working trials (I will need it for maybe 3 days), but of course if it’s not possible paid software is OK too

  • some of the scenes are much “noisier” than others. I think it’s because of the optical wipes, the scene gets noisy always before and after an optical wipe, after the next cut it gets cleaner.

Wouldn’t this just be because sections involving wipes have been through an extra layer of compositing?

I think so

Return of the Jedi - Why so much hate? What do you guys think of it?
Time

The reasons why I don’t like ROTJ that much

  1. The story. It’s basically the same story as the first movie, but now with teddy bears.
  2. Ewoks. They’re cute. But they’re supposed to be dangerous warriors. They just don’t work.
  3. Vader. Vader is suddenly a good guy in this movie. The worst thing he does is he threatens the officers that he came to bring them back to schedule. Wooo, we’re scared. His “turn” at the end has no emotional impact, he was pitiful since frame 1.Also why does Vader without helmet look in Empire like a monster, but in Jedi he looks like a British gentleman ?
  4. Yoda is completely ruined. What, I told you your training hasn’t ended yet the last time we saw each other ? Nah, f**k that, your training is over. And I’m suddenly too old and I will die soon. Like in 3 minutes.
  5. Han Solo. He’s useless. He needs to be saved and his biggest achievement in this movie is that he opens a door after the droid wasn’t able to do so.
  6. Luke / Leia relationship. Yuck. It’s sick and it makes no sense. The fact that Vader is Luke’s father works absolutely perfectly and is even suggested in the first movie, but the Luke / Leia relationship sounds like something what was created after 5 minutes of brainstorming after they realised that they need another Skywalker.
  7. Jabba’s palace. I thought he should be something like a mobster boss, but he’s depicted more like some kind of a Tatooine ruler. Every creature in his palace looks so fake and rubbery that it brings me out of the movie. I mean I can’t concentrate on the story when I know I’m watching puppets and people in rubber masks. It’s like watching a bad CGI effect.
  8. The song. It’s so f***ing annoying. Both versions, Jedi Rocks and Lapti Nek. It’s boring and annoying and has nothing to do with the story so why was it left out ?
  9. Rancor. It looks so fake. This is one of the Blu-ray changes which I like. This scene was unwatchable before 2011 to me. Also why do the creatures in the palace laugh when the pig is being eaten? Shouldn’t it be a friend of theirs? Why doesn’t Luke use the force to to safety? Makes no sense.
  10. The sail barge sequence. It’s horrible. I still can’t watch. Absolutely everything is wrong and should be re-shot. I was hoping that for any of the special editions they will either reshoot it or at least digitally manipulate it so that at least sometimes it looks like somebody was hit, but no. Well at least they put CG ropes around Han’s legs, even when it looks stupid and poorly executed.
  11. The final battle(s). Simply said - way too much action, the focus is lost.
  12. Deleted scenes. Why are the scenes of Luke building his new lightsabre and the scenes where Moff shows he’s a human being and has problems with killing innocents not in the movie? They’re so much better than anything what IS in the movie!

But to be fair - I still like (kind of) this movie, I just think it’s the worst of the original trilogy, but I still like it more than any of the prequels.

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)
Time

Thanks for a lovely surprise.

The negative things :

  • the aspect ratio seems to be slightly off, I think the image is slightly taller
  • some of the scenes are much “noisier” than others. I think it’s because of the optical wipes, the scene gets noisy always before and after an optical wipe, after the next cut it gets cleaner. Do you plan to work on this ? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t REALLY think it’s a big problem, I’m just asking 😃

The positive things :

  • colours are beautiful
  • the detail in the dark areas - I don’t remember seeing some of that stuff since … probably never before
  • nice amount of grain, it’s not distracting but at the same time the persons don’t look like wax figures

I love it, great job guys
