Star Wars Trilogy SE bluray color regrade (a WIP)
Time

DrDre said:

Here are all the regraded shots in chronological order (I’ve also put them on the first page as towne23 suggested):

Looks beautiful.

Just like these 2 pics. They look great.

There is something really wrong with the walls. They basically look monochromatic, and the red light has some weird almost “pinkish” feeling.

The same corridor, the same light conditions, but it looks and feels quite different than the previous shot.

There’s something really wrong with the reds. Just look at their faces and hands. The red lights on the wall also “feel” completely wrong.

This one looks nice.

Again.

The whites are so blown up that detail from the armor and walls is getting lost. The same goes with the blacks in Vader and the soldier and their uniforms.

Looks nice.

Another example of the contrast being too high. There are no details visible in Vader’s or the soldiers costumes.

Again, detail is lost.

I don’t know why exactly but these 3 pics look like urine.

3 great looking shots.

This one needs a saturation boost.

Just like this one.

I hate to be the one who spoils the fun, but I think the regraded pics you posted on the last 2 pages look absolutely horrible. The contrast is completely off, the Tatooine shots look like somebody pissed over them, they are desaturated, I’m sorry but the screenshots you posted on the first 4 pages looked great, but there’s something really wrong with the last ones.

Getting mkv merge GUI
Time

Sorry for this incredibly stupid question, but does anybody have an idea where can I get the good old mkvmerge gui?

What happened is that I have after a long, long time upgraded my mkvtoolnix because I got sick of the “a new version is available” messages. Boy, what a mistake. The new 8.9.0 version has removed the wonderful mkvmergegui and replaced it with a horrible piece of shit called MKVToolNixGui. I can’t use that shit.
After 3 days of practicing it’s still not usable. Things which I could do with mmg under a minute now take 10 or more minutes. I really hate software like this. Does anybody know if there’s a chance how to get ONLY the mkv merge gui program? It’s only a frontend for mkvmerge, so at least in theory I should be able to use the new mkvtoolnix with the old mkvmergegui.

And yes, I tried googling, but google is as useless as most of the time.

Or if it’s not possible, how can I SAFELY downgrade to a version which still has it? Thanks

If I may ask, why are L8wrtr’s prequel edits (and only L8wrtr’s edits, among the various available) listed on the Ultimate Guide?

What Ultimate Guide?

The Ultimate Introductory Guide.

Nitpicker, stop picking nits. 😉

I’m not picking nits, I still have no idea what you are talking about.

I have absolutely no doubts. I’ve seen my share of “how did Lucas mess this up?”, but every time I watch one of your clips, I am amazed at just how botched the BluRays really are.

To be fair to Lucasfilm, what they gave us was decent enough for 2004 standards, and was only intended to be for DVD. The fact they couldn’t be bothered to do a proper restoration for HD is where the issue lies.

Yeah, I was the person who reached out and got stuck in the middle. I had just joined the team and had no idea any of this was happening. Mike had just done a late night video Q & A and had mentioned that he didn’t know what print -1 had but would like to know if it was something he could use. I reached out to him and gave him some sample frames. Mike immediately recognized the print (which astonished me at the time) as being the Spanish print he had already scanned. I asked for help with the Greedo scene and Mike very kindly provided us with the full scene in 4k - which I used in the final version. Mike also requested we send him Reel 1 of the Spanish Print again so that he could get it rescanned, and I passed on the request to -1 who told me “no way”, and went on to bash Mike in another thread here on OT. -1 Also refused to even acknowledge Mike’s contribution to the project - not even a “thank you” for the Greedo scene.

Yeah. The fact that their SilverScreen release doesn’t even thank people who contributed something speaks volumes. They put in a TN1 intro - that’s fine - but without any “thanks to all who contributed” or “thanks to - Mike, Harmy, Poita, etc, and everyone else who contributed but wishes to remain unnamed”.

Also, I’m going to shoot you a PM - it’s about something you are probably already aware of, but won’t hurt to double-check. 😃

I can’t agree with the “decent” part. I bought the DVDs in 2004 and I’ve seen them ONCE. My eyes and ears just couldn’t stand it. I mean I could live with the changes, I think they’re dumb and unnecessary but I can watch them, but I just couldn’t get through the horrible colours and mainly the constant “colour shifts” - if I remember correctly in the Tantive IV sequence the rebel uniforms changed colours in each shot. And also the sound mix was simply horrible, it sounded like it was done by some software which chose compeletely random takes and joined them together without any attempt to make them match (“Would you like another target, a military target? Then name the system !”)

What on earth is the difference between burning the MKV Despecialized and the AVCHD Despecialized?
Time

None of the ehm “official” releases of the Harmy editions have menus.

MKV is just a container, it “contains” the video stream, multiple audio streams and I’m not sure if the subtitle streams were muxed into the mkv file or if they were distributed separately. So you simply play the mkv file in your favorite player, choose your audio track (and your subtitle track) and you watch the movie directly, there are no menus. So you can play it on your computer, or directly on your TV from some USB stick if your TV supports it or you can play it from your BluRay player - again, if your player supports the mkv format (check the manuals or online reviews before burning it to a BD).

AVCHD is basically the same format as BluRay, but it’s smaller. In other words you can burn it on a dual layer DVD and put it to your BluRay player and the player will play it automatically - again, if it support AVCHD discs. But even the AVCHD doesn’t have a menu.

So the basic difference - mkv is one file containing video and audio streams, the AVCHD is either an iso image or a folder structure full of m2ts (and other) files. Most people who are on Windows seem to use ImgBurn or Nero or something like that.

And “official” Bluray of all 3 movies was planned at one point, and it should have nice menues, not sure if it was cancelled or if it’s still being worked on. But if you DON’T require a menu and you want a BluRay, you can use the free TSMuxer to create a BD structure from the mkv file for you.

how can I watch the original '77 star wars?
Time

chazstone2012 said:

any links to see this or a real download would be helpful. Thanks

  1. Asking for or writing download links is a great way how to get the site in trouble and your self banned.
  2. Read the rules before you write something down.
  3. Nobody from us is a mind reader (at least I hope so), so you have to be more specific about what exactly are you searching for.
  4. Go to this part of the forum : http://originaltrilogy.com/discussion/Star-Wars-Preservations-and-Other-Fan-Projects/id/17 , read the stickies, find a thread which sounds the most interesting to you and read it.

I’ve heard that the color timing on the blu rays of the movies (I-VI) is heavily altered from the original versions but I can’t find many examples of this. When I was watching them all some time after I got the set for Christmas, I noticed a lot of DNR on VI and the colors looked odd but I haven’t seen any other version so I have nothing to compare it to (except one film cell I have on my wall).

Some random examples

The Marvel Cinematic Universe

I’m not a fan either. I loved the raccoon and Groot and the collection of 80’s music and that’s about it. To be honest I have seen the movie twice and the only things I remember from it were the mother having cancer scene, the fact that the blue man group expected the main hero to be grateful they didn’t eat him. I honestly don’t remember what it was about.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a horrible movie, the raccoon and the tree are just great, but it’s very forgettable. The same goes with the Thor movies - I liked them when I was watching them but the only thing I remember from the first movie is that the giant robot was destroying a New Mexico town and the only thing I remember from the second one was that it had the “Hello IT, have you tried turning it off and on again” guy in it.

(A slightly old version of) MediaInfo says 21.0 Mbps for “Overall bit rate”. Not sure why it doesn’t specify the video-specific bit rate.

Bitrate

edit:
Since I couldnt figure out how to show it right in MediaInfo, I extracted video (and audio) track(s) separately, and put them in MediaInfo.
Video alone seems to be 13.5 Mbps.

Video:
Bitrate

Audio:
Bitrate

Hope this helps.

Well maybe it would help you if you would select a different mode, e.g. View->Tree and you would get the required information without demuxing the file 😃

Is there still a plan to get the blu-ray iso up on MySpleen? Thanks again for your work!

Yes, that is still the plan, but we are still re-working a few shots and then there is the GOUT Syncing, re-encoding and blu-ray authoring to do, so it is still at least a few weeks away, possibly longer.

Fantastic, thanks a lot for the amount of work you guys are putting into it.

jDownloader has adware ? Since when ? Where did you download it from? I never had a problem with it.
An alternative is Free Rapid Downloader.

From what I read right now the old unsupported jDownloader 1 included bundled software, which you had to intentionally install.
