What is your preferred browser? For Mobile; for Desktop? Why?
Time

Well I’m a web user since the old days when I used lynx. Then I upgraded to links. When Windows started to be usable and not just a crappy toy which crashed every 5 minutes, I started to use a DOS+Win3.1 combination and Mosaic, when Mosaic ended I switched to its spiritual successor Netscape Navigator, when Netscape became a giant bloated slow monstrosity I switched to its lightweight “brother” Mozilla. When the Mozilla project split to different projects I stayed with Phoenix, later renamed to Firefox.

I am still using most of the time Firefox on both Windows and Kubuntu, but it pisses me off more and more with every new release. They removed the status bar, they removed most of the configurations (which was my favourite thing about the browser) from the settings (now they’re available just through the about:config URL), removed Javascript prohibition and the main menu, all of those things I absolutely hate, but I still hate Firefox less than other browsers I tried. But now the last drop - on most sites with an https problem the browser simply doesn’t let me on the site (previously it allowed me to set an ssl security exception), which is absolutely unacceptable to me and I’m seriously thinking about abandoning FF for good. However what should I chose? Is Opera still a thing? I hate everything about MSIE, I don’t like Edge, I don’t like Chrome (it’s a good browser but I can’t configure basically anything which is a deal breaker for me), so what else is there?

Mobile - as an android phone user I use the built it browser, which is based on Chrome. I never had a reason to search for anything else but I don’t use my phone for web browsing that much, basically 99.9% of my web browsing is a search when the next bus is coming etc.

I’ve been considering seeing Star Trek Beyond, as I’ve heard its more in the mold of classic Trek than ST ‘09 & STID. Now, I still haven’t seen the prior two movies and still don’t plan to. Can this movie be viewed as a standalone film, or is it too mired in the continuity of Abrams’ films?

The funny thing is that the previous 2 movies were just action and nothing else, but the best parts of the third movie are scenes were people are just talking to another, which are usually the most boring parts of movies. And the only thing (except the points written above) I would recommend to do is checking online which actor plays which character

I just wanted to thank you for doing this. Even though I’m not a fan of the prequels, they also belong to the Star Wars universe and their theatrical versions deserve to be properly preserved. Just one question, sorry if you answered it and I missed it - will you “un-correct” all the shots which were “corrected” for the Blu-ray? From memory I remember some shots of the 2 headed monster during the podrace

WHY?!?!?!

Because you’re a sexist, racist and you live in the past. At least that’s what most people say to any criticism of the new STD

What.

That’s the social media response to any form of criticism of the trailer(s) and the new show. You’re not excited about the cast? That means you hate women, or black women, or asian women, which means you’re a a sexist and/or a racist. You dare to criticise how the trailer looks like? That means you’re a nerd and/or you live in the past. (Or my favourite - you don’t like that it looks like the JJ movies? That means you want the show to be filmed in SD, 4:3, with paper walks and toys on strings - like any of that except the 4:3 aspect ration was true for any previous Trek).
And my absolute favourite reaction - when a guy wrote under a youtube video that he doesn’t want to pay for CBS All Access to be able to watch it, some crazy bitch started to accuse him that he’s a Donald Trump supporter who hates women and racist, because his “real reason” is not money but the fact that the lead is a black woman.

I don’t know if this is against the rules but can someone tell me where I can find VHS rips of the original trilogy?

I think no links are allowed. And are you searching for specifically VHS rips or simply any versions of the theatrical versions? If so, this is a good thread for start : http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Project-Index-Star-Wars-Preservation-and-Other-Projects/id/2450

Hello guys¡ I recently watched ROTJ SemiEspecialized v2.15 and i noticed there are some “squares” around the ships in some space scenes that, for example, were not present when i saw Despecialized or the Special Edition. Do you know if it´s an error or is of the own film? and why is not in the other versions?

Are you talking about the garbage mattes? If so, they were always there, their visibility in different releases depends on the contrast and color correction of the specific release. And they are BRUTALLY visible in the DVD release

Ranking the Alien films

Here’s my serious question: all of the Alien films (except Prometheus, somehow) have alternate versions. Are any of them actually better?

People hate on the Alien Director’s Cut a lot, which I think is pretty damn silly. I don’t think I would say it is better or even as good as the theatrical, but the difference between the two is so minimal that I don’t know how anyone could have such a strong opinion on it either way.

The Aliens Special Edition is an interesting watch, but the pacing is just dreadful in comparison to the theatrical. The scene about Ripley’s daughter is just about the only good addition.

For whatever reason I’ve never seen the Alien 3 Assembly Cut. Something tells me adding a whole half hour is not quite what that movie needed.

I’ve also never seen the Alien: Resurrection Special Edition because I guess I just don’t care. I can’t imagine it’d change my view of the film much.

I think I’ve seen the unrated cuts of both of the AVP movies, but I can’t be 100% certain because the changes were so slight and forgettable. I’m inclined to say that they were both improvements, but only very barely.

As for fan edits, I haven’t seen almost anything. I’d be curious to hear if people have seen any good ones.

Alien DC - the only scene from the added stuff I like is just the one at the end where we find out what happened with the crew. The rest of the differences are so minor they’re not worth mentioning.

Aliens DC - actually I really prefer this one. I also love its pacing, and added character / relation development.

Alien^3 assembly cut - I hated the theatrical version, I really liked the assembly cut(I am using the word “liked” and not “loved” quite intentionally. Characters are more interesting, some of the plot holes are corrected, and has overall a much better atmosphere. I also prefer this ending over the theatrical one.

Alien Resurrection - were there any changes except a different opening, a different ending and a couple of bits of restored dialogue? Those are the only things I remember and I can’t say I like this alternate ending. I would say both versions are pretty bad.

I haven’t seen anything else yet (except Prometheus)

George can make all the changes he wants. Just label it as a separate director’s cut, not the only version that should exist.

George isn’t the director for 66% of the OOT! ;D

Then call it The George Lucas Edition. Has a nice ring to it.

Here’s how I’d want the films to be addressed
1977 Theatrical Cut
1997 Special Edition
2004 Special Edition
2011 Final Cut

Well there were at least 2 different theatrical cuts in 1977, there was a theatrical cut from 1978 (even though just the audio mix was new), there was a theatrical version in 1981 (Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope)…

I’d love to see the “original original” versions of the 1977 credits! Will you include also the cloudless composite during the “leaving Yavin 4” sequence for this version?
I’d love to see all the existing versions in “as good as possible” quality, so your plan sounds exciting.

I’m going for as complete as possible. Until someone gets their hands on some of the film elements to scan them, portions of the SE, TPM, and AOTC will never be better than enhanced SD. That is why I’m using the GOUT. Number one it is complete and number two it is essentially the same quality as the SE and TPM.

And I don’t have any element to make the cloudless composite. I’ve heard of it, but there really isn’t anything different in the versions I have in my library. I have several LD archived versions, but Puggo and Moth3r’s are the only ones so far that I’ve found with the different credits and the quality is such that I can’t see anything different.

Taken from here :

‘Draft’ - 1977 opening day prints
pre-ANH widescreen bootleg (mthr)
pre-ANH bootleg ‘PS77-78?’ (AntcuFaalb)
16mm English (PuggoGrande)
16mm English (Catnap)

And this thread : http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Print-variations-in-77-Star-Wars/id/14705
claims that

The “cloudy composite” version can be seen in:
35mm Widescreen bootleg (Moth3r)
35mm Widescreen bootleg (AntcuFaalb)
16mm (PuggoGrande)
16mm (Catnap)
Super 8 Derann
NTSC home video versions '82 - '92
PAL home video versions '82 - '91
UK ITV Broadcast version (1982)

Well, you have sent me on an editing spree. I found three shots (all effects shots) that are different - in each in reels 3, 5, and 6. I am still looking for others. But those are the same three the other thread discussed. As they all have imperfections and are archived in PuggoGrand, I think it is safe to say they would have been there on opening day. I will have to incorporate them into my edit. I think I’ll also use the 35 mm crawl. I think the fade out in reel one is also longer. I still have to check other versions before I confirm that. Right now I’m using JSC for the elements and confirming them with SWE and Puggo.

Not sure if you meant it as a good thing or a bad thing, but I’m personally glad you will include the changes 😃
