‘Martina Navratilova: What Serena Got Wrong’… (from the US Open final)

Just because the guys might be able to get away with it doesn’t mean it’s acceptable.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/10/opinion/martina-navratilova-serena-williams-us-open.html

Seems a well written and balanced piece that, offering some insight, and hope that the authorities address failings on show - as well as Serena too.

^ Indeed it would mate, though I felt TFn to be just too insidious for my plain simple tastes. Just felt like showcasing my handiwork with needle & thread. Oh, an obsidian seam ripper too - and assorted pin cushions with some delightfully rare and exotic aromas 😉

(Seriously, am a dab hand at fixing clothes - playing a lot of sport and getting into mischief as a kid (it was the 70’s/80’s) - coupled with not having a lot of clothes… results in becoming quite proficient at patching and fixing them up)

The Criterion Collection Thread
Time

I am in the UK mate and yes, and much of the collection is available for us to buy officially here.

In 2016 Sony struck some sort of deal so Criterion blu rays were available here in the UK - link

Also from sites like…

https://shop.bfi.org.uk/dvd-blu-ray/criterion-collection.html
https://store.hmv.com/blu-ray/the-criterion-collection-on-blu-ray
https://www.zoom.co.uk/search/criterion?q=criterion
https://www.zavvi.com/blu-ray/independent-labels/criterion-collection.list
https://www.wowhd.co.uk/search?q=criterion&mod=AP
https://www.amazon.co.uk/The-Criterion-Collection-DVD-and-Blu-ray/b?ie=UTF8&node=9781575031

and sites like https://twitter.com/ukcriterion are great for info and news.

Before that it was usually pre-owned content on the ebay, gumtree, film & charity/thrift shops etc, and sites like https://www.avforums.com/threads/uk-criterion.2161501/ & http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=274728 or through US friends and family… and some new releases from quality dvd/film stores that had a film buff/nerd on staff etc 😃

I do remember some high street stores having occasional Criterion Collections on sale in their import sections years ago - yet it was seemingly still very expensive. Many of us UK film fans had multi-region dvd players back in the day (or learnt to ‘hack’ certain models so they could play content from around the world).

As for Australia and New Zealand etc - I recall reading that Barnes and Noble sell Criterion films there - as well as as Zavvi (and possibly other online stores too?) - though an Aussie or NZ’er would be able to help you more on that mate.

(I do try to avoid amazon whenever possible - though it is useful as an info resource; am not too happy with their attitudes to paying tax - nor their treatment, conditions and low pay of their workers. Though that’s likely more suited to another thread 😉 )

Hal9000 Prequel Edits - where to find?
Time

You could use your tablet or phone to acquire these Edits - Hal 9000 has made his Prequel Edits available in a wide range of sizes and file types.

Or maybe borrow or use afriend or family member’s pc (or buy a cheap pc) to acquire and/or burn them to disc?

There are a few threads on Hal 9000’s Prequel Edits in the ‘Star Wars Fan Edit’ section of the site, and can also be found in the ‘An Index Thread for Star Wars Fan Edits and Other Projects…’ thread.

The '‘How do I do this?’ on the OriginalTrilogy.com - some information & answers to queries’ thread in the General Assistance section may also be of some help.

Good luck with it mate.

‘Nike sales surge 31% in days after Colin Kaepernick ad unveiled, analyst says’…

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2018/sep/08/colin-kaepernick-nike-ad-sales-up

^ taken from the above article:-

'In July, in an open letter to league owners, the NBA great and Guardian sports columnist Kareem Abdul Jabbar wrote: “It’s been two years since Colin Kaepernick first took a knee to protest systemic racial injustice, especially police brutality, against people of color.

“The worst thing about that isn’t that two years later we’re still debating whether players have the right to protest, it’s that not much has changed regarding what Kaepernick was protesting.”’

Police brutality is a partisan issue in this country. The people opposing Kaepernick and the other NFL players that have been doing this are also on the side of the abusing police most of the time.

Aye, attacking those that protest can be quite an effective diversionary tactic by those in power / wish to keep the status quo - especially in the modern era of limited investigative journalism, repeated news cycles, ‘be first / facts later’ coverage, limited column inches, editors opting (or under pressure) for clicks / sensationalism over quality / wider range of stories.

Maybe our shortening attention spans too 😉

Hopefully the focus will return to the core issues of what is behind the players’ protests - and soon.

Of all the things to boycott… we’ve had football players who were rapists, into dog fights, and all manner of truly horrible things that physically hurt innocent people. But which one that brings in the president and half the country, kneeling during the anthem? What a skewed sense of perspective. I hate this self-aggrandizing pseudo patriotism.

Aye, the ageing cynic in me thinks that many of those who wish to deflect away from addressing and tackling the actual reasons as to why some players are taking / have taken a knee are quite content or happy at the misplaced furore over it.

Imagine if those with this misplaced furore and passion… aimed their ire at addressing the reasons behind the players’ protests too - we may actually get back to the most important issue on the subject, which has seemingly been conveniently ignored of late.

As said in another thread - ‘seems what people who are taking a knee want to highlight issues that are important to them, their friends, families, their communities, to their country - in a bid to make it fairer, better, and just - seems quite ‘patriotic’ that - fighting for that better future, for everyone.’ To me it seems working and fighting towards a better future for their country is more patriotic than displaying some faux outrage at a notion of ‘disrespect’ before a symbol (anthem or flag) that represents said country.

<em>Solo: A Star Wars Story</em> — Official Review and Opinions Thread — <strong>SPOILERS</strong>

It’ll be intriguing to see if they continue an arc into the next standalone film - maybe a character or two from Solo popping up, a continuation of The Crimson Dawn or Nefys Nest stories etc - in let’s say… a Fett or Kenobi ‘A Star Wars Story’ film… a mini-trilogy of sorts?

A direct Solo sequel? I hope so - though seemingly not. Books and comics may be the way for any continuance of the characters & events from Solo.

A Solo sequel that isn’t burdened with back story or crowded with characters would be great. I’d also love it if they moved off the saga completely. As for continuing characters, give me Enfys any day. She’s been one of my favorite characters in a long long time. Sorry the film was so weighed down as it took time away from her. She is a true non-saga character and has a really interesting mystery and depth. She’s an awesome Random. A character who could carry a story unrelated to The Saga.

You’re right though, I’m probably looking at EU to get my fix.

Thought you may like enjoy these couple of articles mate (apologies if posted before)

Discussion: Most Realistic Replica Lightsaber - Recommendations?

Anyone know the best UK manufacturers?

A bit late to the thread, yet it may be of interest to others…

https://krsabers.com/

https://www.jqsabers.com/

https://www.dcsabers.co.uk/home

https://www.forcesabers.uk/

It’s also worth checking out etsy.com/uk for lightsabers too - some decent offers on there, and not too bad on the postage - even coming from the US or Far East.

This site also has a decent list of stores (across the world - including the UK) for sabers - or for parts / replacements etc - https://sabersourcing.com/list-of-lightsaber-companies/

It depends mainly on your requirements - budget (as always!) or if you’d like something with a blade - or just a saber hilt on a stand, something to ‘duel’ with (or withstand a few knocks and scrapes), or a saber that resembles those used in the films or EU etc - or not…

A couple of months ago I ordered a ‘Kyojin’ lightsaber from The Pach Store in Singapore (I am in the UK) as a present. Only took 2/3 weeks to arrive - packaged very well & securely, and the quality for the price was outstanding at $59 (£47), plus p&p.

It’s a ‘light-mid’ dualing saber, has a 7/8 of an inch thick blade (many sabers have 1 inch blades), and has sounds - clashes, hums, movement sounds, blaster blocking sounds, and turn off & on sounds too. Available with black, silver or gold hilts - with blades in red, green, blue, amber, pink and aquamarine…

Superb value for money in my humble opinion - though obviously it doesn’t resemble anything that appears in the films. Have seen a few people ‘weather’ or ‘battle damage’ theirs, adding customisations such as leather straps - or painting some of the recesses a differing colour etc.

https://www.thepachstore.com/collections/custom-sabers/products/kyojin

There’s some decent reviews on it on here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bGUmlZMojoE & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pKTahCV5Tw & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NUiVORqDVQ

The same saber can be bought in the UK from https://thesaberarmory.com/product-category/hilts/complete-lightsabers/ - called an ‘ECO Saber’ on their site - for £59 plus p&p.

Though it’s probably best to look around on the some of the various lightsaber forums, youtube reviews and videos before making your mind up whatever you may opt for.

PS - it’s also worth having a look around for a decent quality stand or mount for the saber too.
