If you need to compliment or praise something... this is the place
Time

People who stop in the high street or city centre and stop to buy The Big Issue from someone who needs a helping hand, or is homeless, or on the verge of being made homeless. To take two minutes to have a chat with the person selling it - whether it’s about the magazine itself, life in general, the footy, or just how life is treating them…

https://www.bigissue.com/ : https://twitter.com/BigIssue : https://www.facebook.com/bigissueuk/

Some great articles in there each week too 😃

Well in.

a News thread for all things Technology & Internet related...
Time

Just thought it may be worth having a news thread for all things technological and internet related - articles and info that may interest to - or may affect - us members on here…

There are also a fair few Technology based threads in the Media Index Thread (under the Technology section 😉)

Tim Berners-Lee launches campaign to save the web from abuse’:-

A ‘Magna Carta for the web’ will protect people’s rights online from threats such as fake news, prejudice and hate, says founder of the internet.

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/nov/05/tim-berners-lee-launches-campaign-to-save-the-web-from-abuse

^ Am intrigued to see how this is meant to work - and if it will actually work (or have an effect)… roll on May 2019 - and anything else that helps meanwhile.

All Things Star Trek
Time

The even numbered ‘rule’ for early ST films really did seem to work out for me. III was probably the best of the odd numbered films for me.

Loved TVH & TUC, as well as TWOK - enjoyable movies I’d still tune into if shown on tv right now; can’t really say that about of some of the other Trek films. I did enjoy First Contact as a film in itself - though not so much as a continuation of TNG Trek.

“and has already recouped its $4 billion investment” - if these films were free to make and market then yes…but they arn’t.

I think the title of the article may just be referring to recouping the $4b buying price that Disney paid to Lucas?

Movies you watch every Halloween

Flash Gordon (1980) - not a Halloween or even a horror film (in that sense 😉) though a good enjoyable romp all the same.

One of my favorite movies. I never get tired of it. The soundtrack alone makes it worth a watch.

I failed miserably at squeezing in all the movies I wanted to watch by Halloween, so I extended my deadline to this weekend.

The soundtrack is great - a real stomping release really in tune with the film! Though every time I listen to it (or hear a track from it) - I can’t help but want to put the film on and give the whole thing a re-watch 😃

Am hoping they’ll do something special for the 40th anniversary for 2020 - maybe a nice and new 4K transfer, compiling all the commentaries and bonuses from the differing releases so far into one new sweet deluxe boxset, including the soundtrack separately or something similar…

Gonna go give Ted a re-watch 😃

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parliament.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence, he was catch’d
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys holloa boys, God save the King!

Time for V for Vendetta and a few other similar-based films this week, then 😃

Equilibrium, 1984, Brazil, Fahrenheit 451, and just because… The Time Machine (1960) - am off to the Media section 😉

Liverpool makes a stand and runs far-right marchers out of town’…

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/nov/03/liverpool-runs-far-right-marchers-out-of-town

Pleased to say it’s not the far time these racist neo-nazis have been run out of Liverpool in recent times - last time they took to hiding in a ‘left-luggage’ shop with the shutters down - link 😃

Even the racist neo-nazis in the government are in trouble over there..

Erm… I have to point that it’s the Conservative Party (who coincidentally have no antisemitism policy for it’s members at all) who are in Govt in the UK - not Labour.

The list of alleged postings of anti-semitic threats online was compiled by Labour Party staff - as well as Party members encouraging others in general to report any anti-semitic posts they saw to the police.

Though am I missing something between this and the thwarted far-right march in Liverpool today?

Falklands heroes were told they “lacked moral fibre” as they suffered with horrors of war

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/falklands-heroes-were-told-lacked-11587195

^ I’ve posted this here as despite it be ‘current news’ - issues surrounding veterans care and their well-being after they leave the services dates back for a long time now historically - something that obviously wasn’t and still isn’t being addressed enough, either through funding - or adequate psychological, emotional and professional assistance - or just a helping hand.
