The legendary "Starkiller Ranch" Thread

Luke and Anakin are different, remember. You really can't compare them. Luke is selfless and would never use the Force to gain power. Luke also had a somewhat safe childhood with Owen and Beru. The only real problem was that they wouldn't let him leave. Anakin always wanted to control things, even as a kid ("I don't want things to change!"). He was a slave with ambitions - even his best friends made fun of him because they didn't believe in him. I think it's more than likely that Anakin had quite a bit of anger inside that he unwittingly let out as a Force power. He was finally gonna prove his worth when Sebulba nearly got him killed. I'd get frustrated, that's for sure! I still personally think it could work.

Changes you want (or don't want) to the 2007 archival editions

I have no problem with the "praxis" type explosions, though George could have been a bit more original, the only things i would like to see added to the movies are the deleted scenes such as the Wampa ones in Empire and the Vader force choking Moff Jerrioriod I believe.

ya i want the wampa subplot added back in and the force choke, and the scene in ROTJ were Ben talks to luke abou the Battle him and Anakin had on Mustafar

The latter will and should never happen. If George Lucas overdubs Alec Guiness, I'll be first in line to tear down Skywalker Ranch with an axe.

Hmm... I know I'm not a part of the project, but I really don't like Anakin using telepathy. Especially not since MTHasslett just said how Anakin should not use the Force all the time (if he even knows of his own abilities). Ultimately, it's unneccessary, and Padmé's reaction isn't very realistic. What would you do if a kid inside your head asked if you were angel? I'd certainly question my sanity and look positively scared rather than just asking "What?".

Allow me to draw another Harry Potter-parallel (although Star Wars and Harry Potter should probably be kept seperate). Even after seeing the damage Voldemort had caused, Dumbledore allowed him to go the Hogwarts. The kid was a bully, but he was probably among the most powerful potential wizards Dumbledore had seen. IMO, Anakin using the Force accidentally would not ruin him being the Chosen One. It shows that he has great powers, but that he has not yet learned to control them. It would not be because he meant to do it - he should probably be as baffled as the crowd - more like a reflex, like InfoDroid said. So he would not have learned to use the Force at this point, but he has the abilities.

I like Anakin using the Force to get Sebulba out of the way. Perhaps some of the other pods as well. However, it should be done in a way where Anakin doesn't really know what he's capable of. It reminds me of the latest Harry Potter book where we observe Voldemort using magic to hurt other children as a kid. Not a bad parallel. My suggestion for how the final scene between Anakin and Sebulba should be done:

Anakin is following Sebulba. Use a close-up of Anakin from the pan-and-scan version to signal that he's staring intensely at his opponent. At this point, the Force theme should kick in. Now cut to Qui-Gon pondering about something - he can sense what's happening. Suddenly, Anakin succeeds. A white flash appears (this may be too goofy, but the use of the Force should be indicated somehow) and Sebulba loses control of his pod and crashes. Anakin speeds up and wins the race. It shows that Anakin is indeed very powerful, but also foreshadows that he will use the Force for wreaking havoc.

And I agree with you on the two-headed commentator, InfoDroid. As of now, he doesn't work.

Screen recording in DOS
Time
Now that Kaal-Jhyy has made a release of the cutscenes in "Jedi Knight", I've been thinking about doing one for "Dark Forces". DOS graphics or not, the cutscenes were excellent. I've already done a few tests using DosBox and of course, the overall quality is great. However, the problem is that DosBox loves to eat up my memory and when you run a recording program at the same time, you know... The recordings I've made skip like hell and of course, that's unacceptable. I've tried doing some recording in "pure" DOS (XP-DOS, that is) and while the game runs much smoother there, I can't get any image. So my question to all you tech-savvies out there is what programs and settings you'd recommend. Thanks in advance.

what'a good age to introduce kids to star wars??
Time
I must have been 8-9 years old when I watched the OT for the first time and that really made my childhood! I still have a damn ton of those MicroMachines playsets. I even think I got one before I had watched the entire trilogy! The images were enough - I didn't need the story. But when I got it, I admit it was a damn nice bonus!

The PT is okay, but it is nowhere near the masterpiece that is the OT. So I'd go for the 4, 5, 6, 1, 2, 3 running order. The OT is the classic you just have to watch. It's an epic tale of heroes, villains and mysterious planets. The PT not only assumes that you know the universe, but it also deals with much darker themes. I sure as hell wouldn't want to show the Order 66-massacre to a kid at that age. The PT should be the ones you pull out when your kid eventually starts asking you questions about the origins of Darth Vader. And trust me, that question is bound to pop up! I just think you need to watch Anakin's redemption first so he doesn't come across as a Padawan-slaying son-of-a-bitch.

I don't care one bit about the fate of prequel characters
Time
Yeah, you're right about the cast. I think the main problem is that it must be terribly difficult to run around on a green soundstage and imagine you're on a dangerous lava planet. Ewan is a kick-ass actor - not only is he believable as a younger Alec Guiness, but he's also one of the few actors in the PT that interacts with the CG enviroment in a way that makes it real. Hayden was better in ROTS than he was in AOTC, but still not on par with Mark Hammill. I blame Lucas' direction - Hayden was told to always have a dark undercurrant. That made him seem like an angry teenager with identity problems rather than the good friend Obi-Wan was talking about in ANH. However, I've yet to watch Clone Wars. Are they closer to being friends there?
