The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
I think I'm good with my Calvert quota for now. Disney definitely should interview him, but not me. Not unless I have some sort of reason. (Beyond what reason exists now.)

My current opinion is that Fred Calvert probably doesn't have any major materials from this film.

Tell the truth I've been lax about contacting certain people of late, partly because I contacted certain other people, who I guess I'd like to hear from first.

Wellll, after a month, my blank discs have finally arrived from Meritline. Was supposed to take a couple days. Normally does. I apologize for the delay in everyone's orders. Not my fault. Will get to burning Thieves again.

While I'm at it ...

If anyone from Disney is reading this right now, and even if you're not ... pretty much all the animators I've spoken to seem to have saved their pencil test reels from the film. Often in U-Matic or some other weird format. I've only managed to actually view the tests of one animator and one layout man, and those tests were wonderfully fascinating, as anyone who's seen them will attest, even containing deleted footage. So. Extras galore if anyone wants to really dig 'em up.

Interesting theory from Jeffrey Gray, of one powerful exec's role in the whole mess.

Patrick and I have often discussed Jake
Eberts' role in the whole debacle. Consider:

-He was executive producer of both the WB and Calvert versions, sold
the
film to Miramax, and actually commended Miramax on what they did to the
film;
-He was the one who complained that there was too much Thief, that Tack
and
the Thief didn't talk, that there wasn't enough Tack and Yum-Yum stuff;
-He was also the one responsible for the gang-rape of The Magic
Roundabout
for the "Doogal" U.S. release, as Patrick tells me.

Also, some things Patrick and I sort of have inferred, assumed,
postulated, hypothesized (none of it is proven; some of it might not
even be
rumored):

-I formulated a hypothesis that it was Jake Eberts who wanted songs,
which
is why Williams wrote songs and stuff into the workprint;
-Patrick told me that WB actually liked what was coming out of
Williams'
studio, meaning that someone would have had to talk WB into dropping
the
film. I wouldn't be surprised if it were Jake Eberts.
-Apparently, someone was dissatisfied with the workprint Williams
delivered.
If WB was enthusiastic about the film (though maybe a little frustrated
at
the slow speed at which it was coming out), could it have been Eberts
who
wasn't? Think about it; it didn't have the songs or any of the stuff
that
someone (Eberts?) wanted Williams to add; if it were Eberts, could
Eberts
have basically "thrown a tantrum" because they were obviously so far
ahead
into production that the chances of them shoehorning his ideas in would
have
been next to nil?
-I speculated that Eberts had an idea of what he wanted when he
approached
Williams, so him trying to push his demands on Williams wouldn't be out
of
the question.

-Eberts would have had a reason to facilitate Williams being thrown
off,
because only without Williams would he have gotten all the stuff he
wanted,
and did get in the Calvert version.

Yes, the witch scene was clearly animated (and presumably finished, apart from probably Nura/Meemee's part) as we see it there, and then reworked mostly in editing to include Tack/Yumyum instead.

Very strange original punchline to it. Note that the witch doesn't blow herself up either.

So, only something like two Williams-animated changes from the original then. We do see the witch pull Tack to the ground, which would have been reanimated from a shot of her pulling herself up onto the Beast, and we see her blow herself up (and meet the Thief).

The rest only filled in by Calvert really.

Editing MPEG2 on the Mac - is there a Womble clone?
Time
No, you have to recompress it in FCP, so it's not native. I don't recommend editing that way, as there's high rendering times and too much M2V video seems to crash the program anyway. Converting it to PhotoJPEG (in MPEG Streamclip) lets you edit more easily (though you pay for it in hard drive space - I had a tough decision between crashing or having less material to edit with when doing my 10 Doctors project).

I don't know of a way to edit M2V natively on Mac. MPEG Streamclip is very useful for cutting the part of a clip you want out, though ... the accuracy being within 15 frames as is the M2V standard. I often "edit" my M2Vs together in DVD Studio Pro - how I did Empire and Jedi classic.

Sort of brought the first post up to date. I always find that weird, when the first post is up to date and then followed by the very early posts of a project. The first post is a hodgepodge now of early stuff and newer info.

Hey, who wants to read the script to The Majestic Fool?

http://orangecow.org/thief/themajesticfoolscreenplay.txt

This strange 1969 script starred Mullah Nasrudin - this is the script that eventually evolved into the Thief and the Cobbler. Although almost unrecognizable from what it later became, you'll recognize elements including a lot of sight gags with The Thief, and many supporting characters.

This was OCR-scanned from a copy. Thus, the automatic text-recognizing system made a lot of mistakes. I've cleaned up the first third or so of the script, ending at the cave lair scene with Anwar and the vulture. The rest may be harder to read.

>> He also mentioned that he feels he was wrongly depicted in the documentary and would like to do a commentary on it...

Geez.

This reminds me of the "runner's commentary" on Chris Morris' My Wrongs DVD. The joke I guess is that the commentary is done by someone who had a low position in the filming, but he starts off by defining a commentary as a chance to talk about the making of a film and officially rewrite the history of how it was made ...

Untitled Bruce Campbell Project (* unfinished project - a ton of info & ideas *)
Time
Your list of films on that compilation is missing Six Months to Live.

I got my copy from ReverendBeastly and it has that on there (and Within the Woods) ... the quality is shit but better than an old VHS I had I think.

As far as the makers of Evil Dead 2 know, the legendary deleted scenes from Evil Dead 2 don't exist anywhere anymore, like the Evil Ed cut in half attack scene. There was also some material shot in S-Mart for Army of Darkness featuring an asshole boss, which probably doesn't exist either.

Well, there was that interview at Cartoon Brew.

...

And of course we've had absolutely no trouble from Disney.

Wikipedia pisses me off.

As for the music in the trailer, it's from Scheherezade, which is used a little bit in the workprint (though not in those scenes) and more heavily in my Recobbled Cut. I used the same music in my trailer, and was surprised when I saw the Warners one. But it's music that Richard tended to use for The Thief material. It wouldn't have fit in those scenes though.

Carmina Burana is also used in the trailer, which is a bit frightening.

Oh, on a shamelessly personal note I just put out an old comedy called Ghostbusted 3. Shot 3 years ago at a film festival. See it at the usual place, FFrevolution.com/InvisionBoard.

September 12, 2006 eh?

Interesting. I'm hoping for a better cover at least, but a widescreen version would be nice in R1. They can just rip the Japanese version.

Perhaps capitalizing on the recent internet publicity surrounding the film (cough).

Yeah, I had a look and found out all about Furious Freddy.

I'm not worried in the least about the MPAA or Disney, but again I'll have more to say on that later presumably. I'm kinda waiting for some more info on things.

I'm sorry about your problems Esn but they have nothing to do with my DVD or the torrent. There is only one Thief and the Cobbler torrent and it's been downloaded by thousands of people. There's no virus in it. No one has helped with your problem because you seem to be the only person who's experienced it, so I don't know what to say there.

I don't know about a rerelease from the Weinstein Company, but it could always be a widescreen version of the Miramax cut which would be nice to have in R1. Who knows .... I'll get better information on this if nothing else turns up.

There have been two DVDs entirely devoted to Star Tours, by Aaron Snyder and Alex Newborn respectively. I have both. The ride video that's out there (and on both of these discs) is not the best quality. You can see it on Return of the Ewok. There is a camcorder bootleg on Newborn's disc which is interesting.

This is an apology as DVD mailings are very much late this month.

At the beginning of the month I fulfilled a large rush order for Douglas Kirk's classes, giving him stacks of the things, and I ran out of Thief discs that needed to be mailed out - I was also broke and out of DVDs.

So I ordered some blank DVDs nearly three weeks ago so I could make more Thief DVDs, but Fedex only tried to deliver them ONCE, and they were returned to the sender. So I never got them. Grrr. I'm out of Thief DVDs. And rent is due, and I am broke.

Oh well.

Sorry for the lateness folks. No fault of my own here. I'll be on it like a comet the second these long-delayed blank discs arrive.

That IS what he means, Dave.

>> The Mk II edit looks great, ocp! There's a lot more quality stuff to see in there. Am I right in saying that even the Brigands scene got spruced up? It seemed clearer to me. Seems like a much better audio mix too. There were some rather loud peaks in the original that have been brought down a bit, like the witch shrieking as she swings on the rope.

Glad you like it! I didn't change the brigands scene or anything in the sound mix anywhere. Funny what the imagination can do. =) I just changed the witch scene and war machine scene (visually), and 3 shots elsewhere.

ADDENDUM - I'll scan the Majestic Fool script when I can. Sorry for the lack of updates - I've been busy editing the Doctor Who Ten Doctors trailer and now editing Ghostbusted 3, a movie I shot way back in 2003. There will be news ....

Mark Smith has been scouring Ebay and bought two pressbooks for The Thief Who Never Gave Up and The Thief and the Cobbler. He sent me a mockup DVD cover using art from them and though that was lacking, the art he used was quite intriguing. I've asked for scans of the pressbooks themselves.

Noteable are some slightly lame line art versions of characters from the film, and a scan of the Thief and the Cobbler logo with the Thief coming out of the O, that we've seen many places but never gotten a good scan of!

UPDATE ... from Patrick McCart -

> By the way, I found out that the R2 PAL BFI release
> of Charge of the Light
> Brigade has a 15 minute interview with Richard
> Williams.

Can we get this?

Doctor Who: The Ten Doctors (Released)
Time
No, that will not be fixed. Some people at Roobard's complained about that too, and I don't understand it. It's a trailer, you're going to have different audio over different video.

The Doctor is a talkative guy, and most of the useable shots of any Doctor show him talking. I usually have to cheat to show him not talking. What he is actually saying in most of those shots isn't usually worth putting into a trailer - it's discussing plot points that have nothing to do with our "story" here.

So I pick shots based on their visual quality, not what he's saying. Audio allows me to discuss the "plot" of this trailer more accurately.

This is a choice and not an error.

That said, I took those complaints into account while editing this new version and you'll see MUCH more of Doctors talking onscreen where you can hear them. You'll get more of a narrative. In fact, a few shots which were silent before I've added the audio back to, and some lines which were only voiceover have become onscreen speech.

I've been in a living hell the past few days as every project I created to try and finish this thing eventually became corrupted and crashed. It takes about 8 minutes just to open Final Cut Pro, and then it would crash instantly, so basically I spent 4 days watching the thing crash. Yay.

Anyway, I eventually salvaged what I'd done, and I've got a 7 minute trailer now - that's well over twice as long as the previous version.

Much of the length is due to the verbose, arrogant, rude and somewhat ginger Colin Baker as the sixth Doctor. I said there was going to be way too much of him in this one, and I was right .... I had too much material with him that matched perfectly the "plot" I was trying to create for this trailer. I cut it down to the best bits, but there's a lot of it.

I edited a complete version of him meeting Tegan again from "A Fix With Sontarans", but left it out as I couldn't justify the long segment in a trailer. I left in a second pretty long segment from "A Fix With Sontarans" though.

It's gotten to the point where I had selected long segments from certain episodes that would advance the "plot" ... such as part of the beginning of "Rise of the Cybermen" for the 10th Doctor ....

But I wanted to keep the trailer moving, so I kept my selections from these short anyway. I certainly had a lot of material by this point to create something six times as long.

It's long now, yes, long .... and it would have been a lot longer if not for my Final Cut troubles. I was only able to finish the trailer by not using the M2V format for video anymore.

It's rendering now and I'll post it soon, after I've looked it over a bit.

Again, about 200 good ideas for shots got lost in all the crashing .... for Big Finish fans I was actually planning on showing Paul McGann with India Fisher. Well, if I ever do another version. I think this might be it, though.

Update - retrieved it! After wasting 3 days trying, endlessly - it took a long long time but I was able to create a video file from the unfinished timeline, and even identified the file that was causing most of the problems!

It will be easy at this point to put together a longer trailer. That said, I'd like to do some more work on these Colin Baker "scenes" first. So ...
