The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
David "Faceman" Cooper has completed his restorations of Arabian Knight widescreen, Arabian Knight pan & scan, and the workprint.

I had said not to bother with the workprint since I expect a slightly better one, but I'm glad he did it - I'm very interested in seeing what quality he was able to get out of such a poor source.

He'll be sending them out on mondayish. Guess I'll see them wednesdayish.

I'm spending the time making further improvements to my cut of part 2.

Mullah Nasrudin scans!

http://orangecow.org/thief/nasrudin

Here are some nice big scans from The Pleasantries of The Incredible Mullah Nasrudin (and a few from The Exploits of the Incomparable Mullah Nasrudin thanks to gamewiz) ...

Richard Williams illustrated these books by Idries Shah in the late 60s, in a very loose cartoony style ... he planned to make a Nasrudin feature, but when negotiations fell through it became The Thief.

In these scans you'll see very early versions of The Thief, the courtiers, Yumyum and others, and get a taste of the humor and wisdom of the wise fool, the Sufi mystic, Mullah Nasrudin.

None of this works on a Mac as far as I can tell.

I'd like to be there for this airing, but viewing your bumper or viewing GBS-TV, I only get audio, no video.

.....

Oh, I didn't answer your question a few posts back.

I put that version of the "One Eyes Dance" in the pencil test reel because it's a different mix/recording. It's from the Calvert work in progress. It's not actually any better quality than what I've got now!

AWESOME work, Faceman. Roofless never looked so good.

That IS the Miramax release you're working with there, in widescreen. And that's all I really need - no need to restore the pan & scan, unless you want to use it (probably a better transfer) to restore The Princess and the Cobbler for some reason. =)

Many thanks ...

Maybe when I get my final version of the workprint I can throw that at you too.

Out of curiosity, what are you doing to the image to get it looking like that? Is it difficult, do you have to change settings often or does one setting work for a whole film?

I've changed my comment.

Great Thief drawing - that's an early one judging from the style - I think all the Thief animations in that scene were early tests, done without any story in mind. Most of them were cut out of the workprint, but resurfaced in the Calvert cuts.

That scene was a MESS to edit in my version, because Calvert had rewritten the scene entirely for some reason. His version being twice as long. So I had a dialogue scene where people were doing the exact same things, but with very different dialogue and crap animation - plus about a minute of random original Williams animation that wasn't in the workprint .... and the scene is nonsensically edited in any version you watch. I didn't quite make it all fit together ...

Eep - I don't know Patrick - I wouldn't shrink it down much smaller than the overscan area.

My my, what an insanely complicated voice cast the IMDB listing now has. =) They should split this up into two separate movies ... or even three, since there are three casts. jeez.

(Mona Marshall and Ed E. Carroll are still only credited as "voice", for their participation in the Princess version.)

If anyone reading this has any info on the 4min film the Dermis Probe, let me know.

No, I haven't stopped, I'm choosing music and further refining the edit ... but yes, I am a little bit hamstrung until Stanch can come up with his best copy. Still, I suppose these are the kind of delays we WANT to have.

It's nice that it's airing on saturday, but sunday would have been Richard Williams' birthday ... much more appropriate. Oh well.

I'm glad it's still running on sunday - maybe with a birthday dedication?

I can't believe you're showing all of Arabian Knight. Shudder.

Not that I mind, but I can't actually watch that ... I wonder who can ...a

Since I can't sign off on my edit yet until the new tape is in, I'm doing something else related, and turning The Thief and the Cobbler into a Lucasarts adventure game, like The Secret of Monkey Island.

Well, Patrick has made his official announcement - The Thief and the Cobbler Recobbled, and an entire evening of related material, will premiere on GBS.TV on March 19th ... celebrating Richard Williams' birthday, I believe ... from 8PM to 1AM eastern standard time, 11PM to 3AM pacific (late where I am!) ...

Care to make the announcement here too, Patrick?

I'm surprised you're not airing A Christmas Carol, but I can tell that time is limited ... maybe next time ... rather have that than The Pink Panther tho' ...

Freddie Got Fingered: What deleted scenes are those?

The Beatles: Magical Mystery Tour is derided as an awful movie, but it would be pretty easy to make this into a better movie - you'd have complete control to do literally anything with it. It's obvious that it needs more good song sequences ("Flying" and "Blue Jay Way" aren't cutting it) - you could mimic the album, include every song from that - I mean the second side of the album, the non-movie side ... So you'd cut in the vids for Hello Goodbye, Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, you'd do a vid for Baby You're a Rich man, and then do All You Need is Love in some interesting way. Add a song whenever it's getting dull. You could fuck around with the structure of the movie constantly, it's random footage anyway. Plenty of outtakes in Anthology including Paul lipsynching during Fool On the Hill. Make it a big mindfuck celebration of the Magical Mystery Tour album.

Dedicate the remains to Ivor Cutler and Viv Stanshall and George and John and Brian Epstein and ...
