The short version being the 'Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act' of 1998 is pejoratively referred to as the 'Mickey Mouse Protection Act'.

After the 1976 copyright extension, the U.S. put people like Ronald Reagan (actor) as president and congress people like Sonny Bono (musician) [replaced by his wife, Mary, who ''authored'' the copyright reform and was not well versed in the matter]  The phun quote being:

Actually, Sonny wanted the term of copyright protection to last forever. I am informed by staff that such a change would violate the Constitution. ... As you know, there is also [then-MPAA president] Jack Valenti's proposal for term to last forever less one day. Perhaps the Committee may look at that next Congress.

Effectively putting people affiliated/friendly with the Content Control Industries in control of the law making process. Making internal lobbying that much easier. They've effectively pushed for longer terms, by swaying Senators like Orrin Hatch who so despirately wants to be part of that scene. (Orrin Hatch is the senator who after learning about napster, said it was ok for companies to *nuke* computers found using the application. Orrin Hatch makes ""music"" and at one point had free samples on his website, loaded with DRM so that you had to own the CD to play the free sample. Genius.) In 1998 if copyright wasn't extended, Mickey Mouse would have gone Public Domain in 2003/4. They pushed things back and now it's 2023 or 2036.  (that work for hire argument)

I think the Plinkett/woman storyline is just his running gag, which now needs a new place to hang out.  I don't get a sense he's willing to give it up for closures sake, and it didn't show up as much in the RotS review.  I like the storyline, and each new segment has been getting higher and higher quality so maybe this is his was to break into a major Motion Plinkett Picture.  A full picture of Plinkett reviewing horror flicks as he's stalked by the lady, could be a Blair Witch type success, except 4-6 hours long, please, make it gruelling and exhaustive. 

The Star Wars thing seems to have run it's course for the time being, like the Star Trek reviews he's tackled the ones which fit the ridicule.  He did drop in likes in this review, so the angle of a completely positive review could happen, but highly unlikely.  Could take an under appreciate movie and show how it's supperior to a hollywood remake, that could be where the positive review might show up.  Mr. Bean the tv show verse the movie might be good fodder.  But don't put it past him to do a gag Holiday Special review of Plinkett sleeping through it or praising Art Carney for a successful days work/pay check.

Just hope he gets the chance to work, if he wants, in other areas.  The career seems like the South Park guys, a few underground successes which could amount to fantastic creations if someone would give him the chance.  The Plinkett movie review thing could work great on Showtime, HBO or the Sci-Fi channel late nights, no defined schedule just when it seems appropriate.  But he's made better career choices then I could guess at, so like what he's up to and will continue to support.

Their idea of preservation at the moment is the right climate controlled conditions so that the films will exist when copyright expires.  So that some future generation a company/organization will ask the library to reproduce the work for profit or non-profit.  Copyright gives a window for the creator to reap the benefits of their work.  From a discussion of this in another forum, if George lives to 97, in 2111 Star Wars will go Public Domain.  100 years.  Happy Copyright everyone.  yeeha.

Generally it's assumed that the blu-ray set will not include the Theatrically shown movies. And since GL and LFL seem to be formulating the Saga6 as the goal not any of the individual films, there will not be any future release of these films as they appeared opening day. Not in theaters, not in the home, nowhere.

So how long will this continue. U.S. Copyright is currently Life of Creator + 70 years. George is 66, let's say he lives to 97 (the SE age/year) that would mean Star Wars goes Public Domain (as long as copyright is not modified) in 2111.

So starting this year for the next 100 years, the Star Wars movies as shown Opening Day will not be shown with LFL consent.

So first thing to note is 'Courtesy of CBS/Fox' maybe they're keeping the VHS, but this will answer the 'where'd they get this version question'.  I'll leave it to the better color educated, but they don't look DVDish, but the colors could be as they are because of the high compression for this clip, it's weird that it's pan/scan.  But again, this could be a media clip offered from CBS/Fox's press corps not Lucasfilm or a digitization of the actual film going into the archives.

Do betamax tapes degrade in any significant way? 

Would the original recording have been impacted by any technological limitations of early 80s home systems.  Any guesses on camera type?  Would they have used something like this:

SONY HVC-1000 - 1979. The HVC-1000 is an example of an early Beta video camera. Originally, the HVC-1000 required an adapter to record to Beta recorders. Later, it could record directly to the Sony SL-2000 and SL-2500 of 1982.

Seems like more hand held version were a few years away still, so the operation behind ESB had some serious connections to get the equipment and replication.

Or would a more industrial camera, maybe from a local news station more likely been the device behind these recordings?
