reinvogorate your experience of watching Star Wars by watching other films from 1977.
Time

Many claim that the early 70s movies, characterized by gritty often depressing themes, lead to the theater shift toward happy, any age going movies.  Rocky then Star Wars being contributors to that shift which would make the 80s what they become.  So if you want to dip back a year, you can toss Rocky onto your watch pile.

Think of this action as a move on a chess board.  They are setting up something, or finishing off a series of moves.  Kerner Optical was the origins of ILM.  The Presidio replaced the need for this company.  Yet it was kept around till now.  (and it's not definitely going completely under/away)  So why are the assets of this company being reconsidered after all this time?  Maybe sentimentality has run it's course, maybe this was all part of the Presidio shift over and these are some of the remaining details to get worked through.  Not sure.

The documents that the above link can be downloaded for free.  I'd do it but i've gone over my 'free' limit for the quarter.  All public court documents are available through PACER.gov.  You set up an account (credit card req'd) and every quarter you are allowed $10 of documents.  (each search/page is $.08)  The lawyer on the job got 70k.  (think that's what "Disclosure of Compensation of Attorney for Debtor" means)  Don't know if that's a big or small fee for a lawyer.

Kerner Optical, LLC (used to be part of ILM) has filed for bankrupcy. (Chapter 11)

http://www.freecourtdockets.com/Dockets/Kerner-Optical-LLC-1-11-bk-10413-California-Northern-Bankruptcy-Court-Docket-Page-1-21077-21077.htm

Chapter 11 Voluntary Petition, Fee Amount $1039, Filed by Kerner Optical, LLC. Order Meeting of Creditors due by 02/11/2011. (Chandler, David) (Entered: 02/04/2011)

Probably inevitable as most of ILM moved to the Presidio development.

wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kerner_Optical

Kerner Optical started when George Lucas discovered that 20th Century Fox had closed down their special effects department after Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was green lit for production. Lucas then started his own special effects company, Industrial Light & Magic.

In Chapter 11, in most instances the debtor remains in control of its business operations as a debtor in possession, and is subject to the oversight and jurisdiction of the court.

Some reorganizing, could be a sign of things to come.

Official Response:

Library of Congress
Copyright Office
101 Independence Ave., S.E.
Washington, D.C. 20559-6000

Title: 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media' Control Number: 81-512-1302(L)

To whom it may concern,

This letter is to explain my position why the work, 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media' should be included into the Library of Congress.

Although advised by examiner, Gareth James, that the commentary portion of this presentation could be included as just the text, I informed him that both the audio/video and commentary were 98% recycled. So I am proceeding with the 'Performing Arts' registration, realizing that it will most likely be denied, because the 700+ permissions have not been obtained.

I view this presentation as citizen journalism. Although it was 2005 (before youtube) vast volumes of media data was available for consuming and reinterpretation.

I don't claim to own copyright of any of the pieces in this presentation. Just like the author of a book doesn't claim ownership of the letters 'C' or 'P'. Letters are the tools of writers. Media sources and their sentence, word fragments or images are the building blocks of my attempt at citizen journalism. And that collective re-newsing is what I feel deserves a copyright registration. I understand this registration doesn't protect me from future lawsuits dealing with the individual reuse cases from their owners. All published versions of 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media' has been dedicated to the Public Domain, Creative Common's license CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.

According to the Library of Congress' website: (http://www.loc.gov/about/mission.html)

Quote: "The Library's mission is to support the Congress in fulfilling its constitutional duties and to further the progress of knowledge and creativity for the benefit of the American people."

If the Library of Congress denies works on the lack of permission claim, they are failing to support their Congress persons, since much of public knowledge falls into this grey area which has been created by advances in technology.

The Library of Congress is acknowledging this grey area and the media landscape shift with two recent acquisitions.

1. http://twitter.com/librarycongress/status/12169442690
Quote: "Library to acquire ENTIRE Twitter archive -- ALL public tweets, ever, since March 2006! Details to follow.
10:36 AM Apr 14th, 2010 via web Retweeted by 100+ people"

All those retweets are given equal time in the Library of Congress archive, even though they are 99% exact copies of their source.

2. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/sports/09archive.html?src=twrhp
Title: Library of Congress Buys Audio Archive

Quote: "Miley was a junior at Bosse High School in 1947 when he began taping sporting events as a hobby with a $165 wire recorder that his father bought from Sears & Roebuck."

These are illegal recordings according to the Permission rules applied to my project. Except these sporting event recordings are completely unaltered. Everything in 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media' has been processed / analyzed and reconfigured so that it tells a new story or enlightens upon a larger topic which wasn't necessarily the primary focus of the original recordings. Which is one of the guides in copyright legislation; does the work provide commentary, criticism, news reporting, research or scholarship.

It's the viewpoint of myself, that this type of presentation will be possible in future search engines. We have archives of video data (C-Span, youtube, etc.), the public is beginning to tag the data with meta values and recently even subtitles. Search engines can process the subtitle text just as easily as a webpage's text, so implementing simple video editing to the subtitles will make search results of processed video a reality. Presentations like 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media' will become commonplace, it might not be pretty but it is informative.

In all reproductions of 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media' all the original sources are declared so that the entity interacting with the project can seek out the original source. I will not be attempting to get 700+ permissions for a variety of reasons.

If denied, I will anonymously donate 'Thee Backslacpkping With Media' to the Library of Congress.

Thanks for your time and consideration, sincerely.

Going thru the PACER (http://www.pacer.gov/) database brings up many cases I didn't know existed.  It seems there was a significantly wider effort in 2005 to combat internet copyright infringement.  The US had just installed the Family Copyright Act and these cases are some of the ones attempting to see it implemented.

Would like to review these documents.  (and there's tons of other things which could be interesting)  But need some assistance to speed up the process.  What I am asking people to do is create an account at PACER.gov and in a semi-coordinated effort, download the documents everyone finds interesting.  But there are possible fees, here's how that works.

On the front page of PACER (http://www.pacer.gov/) at the bottom is a paragraph which explains the fees of the site.

Expanded PACER Fee Waiver In March 2010, the Judicial Conference of the United States approved reducing the costs for many users of the PACER system. The Electronic Public Access fee schedule has been adjusted so PACER usage of less than $10 in a quarterly billing cycle is waived, in effect quadrupling the amount of data available without charge. Previously, usage under $10 in a calendar year was waived.

All users of PACER will receive a quarterly invoice or statement indicating the amount of quarterly charges and amount waived (if under $10). Users registered for paperless statements will receive an emailed notice of billing. The email contains the account balance, payment due date and a link to view the invoice or statement.

The idea is to coordinate the efforts of multiple people to download the documents, all staying under the $10 limit.  (i'm already $100+ in the hole)

I'm going to make a webpage which will house the documents, and coordinate this effort.

If you are interested please e-mail me at:  pl1x@earthlink.net

I still have an old episode of Inside Edition that spoke about the rampant bootlegging on TPM in 1999. It's really interesting, especially the part that says they're allowed to sell up to a certain dollar amount. :s They go into shops wiht hidden cameras and try to buy copies. There are others that have them spread out on the sidewalks, too.

Would be more then happy to digitize that for you.

Recently digitized a copy of the Dateline piece "Phantom Taping" from 1999 on the topic.  The laws these reports choose to talk about are interesting, in the Dateline piece they claim it's not illegal to purchase bootlegs, which I guess gives them clearance to do this type of reporting, ie buying pirate versions and talking about them.  There's a few other oddities in the Dateline report, more on that later, the screen caps say it all.  That's another thing on the random to do list, see if I can get those reporters to talk about their remembrances.

The blanket spread out with tapes is a common sidewalk thing.  Makes it easy to grab'n'go.

Have recently been going through PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) http://www.pacer.gov/

getting some of the public records for the various related trials.  Trying to get a better sense of the vastness of the US Government records.  Although it's one case, that case had decisions made by multiple departments and each department has it's own FOIA submittal issues.  What's nice about PACER is in any quarter if your searches/results stay under 10 bucks (.08/search/page) it's free.  So far have 'USA v. Hoaglin', 'USA v. Lumada, et al', 'USA v. McCausland'.  Will get some more when there's time.  Started looking into 'USA vs. Spatafore' but records past a certain number of years go into long storage, so will have to write a letter to get those.  There were a bunch of other records for this guy, they had him on a payment schedule but after a few years it took him under and there are some bankrupcy documents...

Attempting to identify the version Spatafore had, unfortuantely the waybackmachine didn't exist back then.  Need to find some other archive system.  Also looking for old .nzbs.  Anyone heard of a place collecting those, even though they are unuseable?

Read about how in the late 70s, there were renegade Italian television stations and one called 'Teledrog' played a pirated version of 'Star Wars'.

http://www.streamingmedia.com/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=64166

The best article i've read on this FBI prosecution of a TPM copy.

Prosecuted for enabling illegal downloads of "The Phantom Menace," Jason Spatafore says he’s a scapegoat. The FBI insists it has cornered a real threat to the movie industry. Staff Writer Jason Thompson examines the case that evokes big questions about the role of copyrights in the digital age.

In the fall of 1999, a 25-year-old computer technician from Phoenix, Ariz., discovered that "Star Wars: Episode One" was available for free download at NataliePortman.com, an unauthorized fan site for the "Phantom Menace" star. Jason Spatafore (a.k.a., the Disman, due to his love for Disneyland) posted the film at his home page, Spata4ent.com.

Hot TPM bootleg market in New York City

Posted By Paul on May 29, 1999

Disclaimer: while Star Wars-related bootlegging news interests many of our readers, theForce.net does not condone the unlicensed sale of Star Wars bootlegs.

Reader "Darth Venus" sent this in, regarding Episode I bootlegs:

Just wanted to let you know that this is THE HOTTEST thing in nyc right now..Dealers are sellin out in minutes ...i waited on a LINE to get it on 8th ave. The bootleg i've seen all over town is pretty good...very washed out though not much color..but the audio is very VERY good, even the box was nice..looks real!...I asked The guy how its been ..He said He gets about 50 then there gone in minutes...His pager was going OFF for requests on where do get it..as i walked down the street.people were walking up to me asking if i could it for them or point them in the right direction...was very surreal, He said that the word on tha street is that a BETTER quality copy is hitting soon..with the audio dubbed straight to tape instead of it just being recorded in the theater...all an all if u want it its there ,but its hard to find..The guy i asked said he wasnt puttin it out to display..but if u asked he'd sell it..IF HE HAS IT!...also I saw a few vcds in china town going for about 7-10 bucks..but everyone i talked to about it was VERY VERY shady about it, even to the point of pretending to not know english when i spoke about it..but when i bought a john woo film..PERFECT english ..ha!...feel free to post all this..

Reader RojBlake7 also sent in some information from the southern U.S.:

Wanted to let you know that Bootlegs have hit the south! I picked up near Atlanta GA and a friend of mine a little south found some! $10 each and not as bad looking as i would have thought

Also, Shannon Opiela sent in an alert that http://www.vcdvision.com is openly selling copies, and even sending soliciting email to increase sales.

Finally, reader "BathTub" pointed us to an online story here about an online MPEG version.

http://www.isonews.com/misc/news/news.htm Article about MPEG version. (link inactive)

http://boards.theforce.net/the_phantom_menace/b10007/15911776/r15921475/

I saw it before in a bootleg version from the net..

Of course, I saw a bootleg version in June. Again, all stupid Germany's fault. Cool movie, but a ******* bootleg

http://www.theforce.net/holonet/story/Star_Wars_Prosecution_for_Kazaa_63797.asp

Jason Spatafore, 25, pleaded guilty to posting just one movie on the Web--"Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace"--in December 2000.

Supposedly this version is the movie with a voice over translation in Russian!

http://www.theforce.net/episode1/story/Lynne_Hale_Comments_on_TPM_Net_Bootlegs_80177.asp

Lynne Hale Comments on TPM Net Bootlegs From the Hollywood Reporter ...

Star Wars: The cybermenace

Full-length copies of "Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace" have been discovered in downloadable form on Internet sites as film piracy enters the cyberspace era. Other complete motion pictures, including "The Matrix" and "Payback," are finding their way onto the Internet within days of release or, as in the case of "The Blair Witch Project," sometimes even before the film hits theaters.

"We're taking a very aggressive stance and working with the FBI and the MPAA to go after anybody who has put or intends to put our film on the Web," Lucasfilm spokeswoman Lynne Hale said, noting that the copies brought to Lucasfilm's attention thus far have been "of very poor quality." While that may be true, particularly in the case of bootlegs obtained by sneaking a camera into a movie theater, some observers claim to enjoy downloaded dupes with crisp imagery and pristine digital sound.

Stopping Bootleggers

Anyone with information pertaining to the selling and distribution of bootleg copies online, or in any format, please send it to hotline@mpaa.org, the MPAA's anti-piracy hotline. (The MPAA rewards program could earn you $15,000 if you report someone.)

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/1999/jun/02/news

http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/1999/jun/03/news

Film Unlimited however has been informed that the internet copy - which has apparently been copied directly from the movie reel, not shot from the screen as originally suggested - is of a satisfactory quality.

TREADWELL COLLECTION

Prior to the digital days, Star Wars media collecting took place in the home recording VHS medium. Many thanks go out to TREADWELL who took the time and energy to preserve these Star Wars memories. From specials, commercials, interviews, to news reports and more, these tapes provide view points of the evolution of the Star Wars phenomenon.

Help: looking for... X-Play Star Wars Special
Time

Do you know who asked for it to be removed from youtube?  Much of G4TV's programming is available (at least partly) on their website.  There's a good chance programs like this might return this year with the official release as people dust off and relook at their old SW media.  Might want to add usenet to your list of places where this might show up.

Would love to also see the G4TV 'Star Wars in Japan Celebration' special.

Jambe Davdar wrote: I think I've just found on on page 36 and 37 of Cinefex issue 3 that shows the motor used to move the Tauntaun puppet along to create the motion blur effect.

Initial thought that go-motion would have been used for the shot of Han entering the hangar or approaching Luke.  Wouldn't they have moved the camera, not the model?

*EDIT*

Fantastic Films issue 18 has an interview with Phil Tippett, and when talking about the Taun-Tauns they continually mention stop-motion.

pg. 25

FF: The stop-motion Taun creature sounds exciting.  What was the genesis of the figure, and who designed it?

Tippett: When I started on Empire, George Luca had been working on the Taun design with Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston.  At that time, the way the animal was going to be designed was still up in the air.  THere was takl of full size mechanical things, men in suits, stop-motion puppets - they ran the whole gamut of approaches.

I drew up a number of designs based on some of the things Joe had done, as well as some alternatives.  Lucas wen for a design of an animal suited for stop-motion, and we spent the next month refining the thing with Irwin Kershner and Gary Kurtz.  In September of 1978 we sent a design mock-up to England.  They in turn sent back a mock-up with a numbe of practical and aesthetic changes.  FOr that point, I began sculpting the final puppet, while Jon Berg and Toom St. Amand found time amongstthe Walker parts to put together a testing armature.

FF: When did test shots begin?

Tippett:  That happened at the begninning of 1979.  Ken Ralston began integrating the motion control equipemtnn with stop-motion requirements.  Dennis Muren and Richard Edlund made a number of contributions.  With relatively little adaptation, we got some promiising shots.

We went to the beach and photographed reference material on horses much like we had done with an elephant a few weeks earlier for the Walkers.  We set up a situation similat to Muybridge's Animals in Motion, which helped us understand animal movement as it related to film.

I spent the next few months shooting tests, running fur tests, Walker tests.  Jon Berg and I developed a final armature that would work better with the motion control equipment.  Doug Beswick and Tom St. Amand refined and constructed it.  The final The final Taun was ready in August 1979.

But for one reason or another, we didn't start the bulk of the Tuan shooting until January of 1980.  We were involved with a number of other projects as well as the stop-motion, and we completed the Taun shots two and a half months later.  There's where the planning paid off!  There was no time for mistakes.  All activity on the stage had to be shut down by mid-March in order to give the optical department time to composite everything.

Here's some more:

Tippett: We got most of our shots on the first take.  But all of these problems are indicative of what we've been up against.  Occasionally we would have to re-orient our approach to a troublesome shot.  Especially with the Taun peppet, since we were dealing with blurs.  In attempting to solve that problem, we created five more that had to be fixed.

Hey ho, also a cut scene i'm not familiar with:

FF: Were there stop motion out-takes, shots we will never see in the film?
Tippett: We shot the Walkers and Tauns like everything else in Empire, to replace a rather small slug of film in a particular roll.  Everything was organized so that those shots were taken care of first.  We were able to add a few extra things.  Most of them are in the picture.  But the only shot that didn't make it was the two-legged Walker that Joe, Jon and Tom came up with.  The shot showed a Speeder strafing the scout Walker.  It didn't cut in.

*EDIT*3

ah this was mentioned in the Annotated Screenplays:

Well, the big thing that didn't end up in The Empire Strikes Back was the two-legged walker, but it did end up in Jedi. You get a brief glance of it in Empire, but there was a shot, a POV from one of the snowspeeders; the speeder is attacking the walker and passes right over its head. Unfortunately at the very end, we were under a deadline and were literally up all night shooting this scene. Someone didn't tighten up the backing of the painted sky, and no one noticed it. The next day in the dailies, you could see the background slip, and it slipped about eight inches half-way through the shot...It just fell, which completely ruined the shot.
