Spielberg comments on digital alterations to his films

Mrebo wrote: Why in the world did Lucas use that CGI Jabba?

Because they wanted Jabba to move.  And CGI Jabba cost a lot less.  and the computer model could be recycled for future projects, it was also a 'could it be done' kind of pushing the envelope test.  They weren't satisfied with the 1997 SE results as the 2004 set shows.  and 2011 might bring another one.

On the successful CGI side, Watto and Sebulba for me show how hand animated computer characters can be pulled off and be a part of the creation of a believable synthetic character creation.  Gollum's use of on set animation techniques added a lot to the believability.  Jar-Jar and Yoda might have been improved using this technique.  But the technology wasn't their until Avatar to have it as part of the on set integration.

Harmy wrote: I was actually thinking that about the Czech thing. STAR WARS got it's first theatrical release here (and other post communist countries) in the early 90s, so the prints had to come from somewhere right?

The fall of communism and hollywood finding a new audience leading to Fox looking to create new prints which would bring to GL's attention that the original was degrading is a logical sequence of events which lead up to the SEs.  Now is it Fox who first looked and found unsatisfactory results and went crawling to LFL who then said hey for a few extra bucks let us do some computer enhancements.  Probably not as I can't see how they hadn't heard stories of the 77 type of film's shortcomings in this same time period, and GL was just waiting for technology to catch up so everything could be put onto one bill.

The Nolan/GL interview covers this briefly:  begins ~49:50

GL : "It wasn't as bad as I thought it was" (talking about the 77 special effects, now looking back on the SE work)

GL : "We discovered there was no print.  We did a three strip in order to preserve it.  They had... Fox had never bothered to strike a print of it, fifty thousand dollars, so they never looked at it.  I went to retrieve it from the salt mines, the cyan was completely out of sync with everything else.  There was nothing you could do about it, it was worthless.  I had to go to Poland Czechoslovakia. Putting things together."

GL : "We needed to get a good print.  There was no good print of this movie anywhere.  So to preserve the film for the possibility of a reissue.  We started working on it."  (drifts into Jabba talk)

In some of the article already posted, there's a frame which looks very cyan, do you think that pic could be from this faulty cyan strip, which is 'out of sync'?

What's the Poland, Czech thing about?  Are they another good preservation type location?  (maybe these two places might have someone who might know of a SW copy over there.  http://www.nfa.cz/en/ http://www.nac.gov.pl/en/films)

Don't know about your article, but having these statements in sequential order might be something to consider.  Seeing how the story evolves with time may inform/influence people's opinion of this process.

He was later drafted by the Army for military service in Vietnam, but he was exempt from the draft after medical tests showed he had diabetes, the disease that killed his paternal grandfather.

People have also mentioned hyperthyroidism, but more or less unconfirmed.

Spielberg comments on digital alterations to his films
Time

Lucas in my eyes sees most things as a means to keep ILM going and pushing technology.  He might be funding behind the scenes some new technology to save film non-digitally.  But everything since the early 90s has been to push funds into the future of media and easing it's creation.  Lucas's dad dies, Lucas moves into the provider role.  Recycled SW (SE, VG, PT) became the advertisements for ILM and the other divisions.  Don't think these statements even by close friends and creative cohorts make an impact.  It's partly a scientific endeavour why take your own time away from promotion of this goal to spend time promoting something old.  Let the public do it if they value the cultural artifact that much.

Locating Cameron quote about Lucas changing movies??

canofhumdingers wrote: you must be much more proficient at searching than me, I searched for hours (seriously!).  At any rate, THANK YOU!!!!!

That's why I typically put the link when i'm quoting something and when finding search results, give the search engine results link.  Click, You'll see what I did, searched only through this website, then with cameron's name and I remembered that the quote was discussed in a blu-ray thread, that made it surface on the first page of results.  The more terms you can give, often it helps make the info surface quicker.

Tobar wrote: If we're looking for citations, could someone dig up that quote from Sansweet or Lucas where they mention they've had the transfers done for years now?

Not finding a quote, (if you give more details might find it) have a feeling this was from speculation that the source of the blu-ray wouldn't be a new transfer but a continuation of the 2004s which were from the SE enhancements which were done at 1080.  zombie84 explained here:

Quote:

You mentioned these six minutes of new scenes. Are you one of these guys like George Lucas who likes to go back and tinker with their old films?
I’m not into revision. I think every film should be exactly as it was executed in the moment. We’re not changing the rest of the film, we’re just dropping these scenes in. I actually don’t believe…like when George went back and put new creatures into the original Star Wars, I find that disturbing. It’s a revision of history. That bothers me. I certainly wouldn’t go back and do that to any of my films. A film I made in 1984, it’s what it is. It’s a creature of its time. But with these new scenes we’re adding, I think people certainly had an appetite for more Avatar than we gave them. Nobody complained about it being too long. The scenes we’re putting back are righteous scenes, they’re not Jake sitting around talking about his childhood.

Celebration VI
Time

Indeed why go to a large gathering of warsie nerds who dress up as stormtroopers and kiss Lucas ass the sycophants, when the original films are locked up in skwalker ranch and he won't release them.

Lets pay money to the almighty bearded one and worship him. And celebrate the destruction of the oot.

You can also use the opportunity to network with the people who will one day revive the movie you believe is lost.  There's space at or near the event to do your own thing.  (but i'm only judging from being at the last one)  I was able, without any hassle, to hand out several hundred strange DVDs, (to all levels of fandom) a similar thing can happen at the next one, to an even greater level.

and the projection idea is something to really consider, would need some help, please suggest tech here:
