Disk Image - ISO or MDX / multi-session problem
Time

Thanks have found VCDEasy: http://www.videohelp.com/tools/VCDEasy

But seems that the PC's i've got access to have newer operating systems (Vista and Win7) which are making VCDEasy think it's non-compliant.  The problem stems from VCDEasy requiring not just Windows Media Player, but a specific version.

Here's a thread from 2009 on the unresolved issue:

http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/297910-Errormessage-after-install-of-VCDEasy!-WMP-not-installed!

At the least have the .mdx version, but will spend a few more hours poking around for a workable option.

*EDIT*

Trying Isobuster which maybe working.  Finding it weird that you have to create the .bin in one operation and .cue in another.  Nevermind when you create the .bin, it automates the .cue creation process.

The War of the Stars Part II - The Future in Motion (Released)
Time

This edit works from title to final edit.  Great example to show how fan edits are not just about messing with whats been, but creating what hasn't existed.  Lots of moments which make you smile seeing how the familiar material can tell a new tale.  Not just short gags and omages but comprehensive re-storytelling, taking a theme, playing it up and expanding it to it's logical conclusion thru the manipulation of multiple scenes and sources.  In many ways the main story tread which is played up in 'The Future in Motion' could very well have occurred in the real movie.  Luke's tale does follow the trend set up in the the first War of the Stars, so although not completely grindhoused, tFiM is a great continuation.  And the level of skill involved shows that TMBTM's craft is continuing to expand.  Enjoyed 'The Future in Motion immensely.

I laughed out loud at the first 'How typical' line.

Both zombie sites have at times given these warnings even as the pages haven't changed.  I've clicked through the warnings which allows you to then give feedback that the site is not a bad site.  Maybe if that happens enough the malware warning could automatically be dropped.  There maybe a problem, (doubt it) but only the site owner can get that info from these automated systems. (if you get the details zombie, let us know)  I think any site can get on these lists just by someone submitting their name or something in the wordpress theme got compromised.

*EDIT*

The site behind the block is http://www.stopbadware.org which is an outfit sponsored by Mozilla and Google who are attempting to be helpful.  They have suggestions for what to fix, then after the site owner has done that, you can 'request a review' which will determine if the site gets off the block list.

what would happen if George Lucas had started with Episode 1?
Time

In my mind, TPM'77 would have been more like a Star Trek/Twilight Zone short story type film.  This is basing that the political mechanations would be the draw of the film and the story would be a parable for the recently ended Nixon era.  The film wouldn't need Star Wars'77's special effects as the film would be more dialog driven.  The behind the scenes and in the halls of the Senate and a few planets/locations showing the effect of the Senate's choices on 'the people'.  Maybe play up a human world verse an alien one and how one dominates the other through political means.  All this relies on what 1999 George was interested in, not what 1977 George was into.  For that you can read the early SW scripts.

Disk Image - ISO or MDX / multi-session problem
Time

I would like to make an ISO or similar type archive of a VCD from 1999.  My normal methods have failed.  (Mac using Disk Utility and Toast)  Have not been able to play the disc in any of my normal mac software.  Am learning PC ways of doing this.  Tried several programs so far which have fail.  Currently attempting with DAEMON Tools Lite which has informed me that the program couldn't create an .ISO as the disc is a multi-session.  So considering the .MDX format, which I am unfamiliar with.  Would like to the archive to be as universally accessible as possible.  Am curious is the .MDX format widely accepted?  What are it's merits?  Please suggest some other software or formats to consider.  Want the archive to be bit perfect if that's possible.

Info Wanted: Which OT preservation is best for me - and whom should I contact?

One thing missing from your description is what version of the Star Wars films are you interested in seeing?  If you are not sure of the version, mention the key elements which are important to you or the things you'd rather not see.

There is no one stop location to get all the projects discussed in these forums.  Some creators set up a torrent, others use file sharing, others go usenet and some have websites.  Each thread handles it their own way.

Dropped hard drive
Time

asterisk8 wrote: My computer recognized that a USB drive had been plugged in

This is a good sign as it shows that some of the circuits which control the communications between your machine and the drive are undamaged.

The freezer trick sounds like a great idea but there are multiple avenues to approach before putting the drive in the freezer.  and the thing with putting a computer device into a place which is a highly concentrated moisture box is that now all the smaller components are now more likely to fail because you've placed the  in  a   moisture   box....  The freezer trick is a last resort because it can phuck up things which were not broken before.  I've also noted that when they recommend the freezer trick they also say that you've got one or two shots after getting it out to get the data off, before it fails in new spectacular ways.  So this is a last resort and very much not recommended.

I would recommend that for now you put the drive aside.  Get your mind wrapped around the idea that you will not see the data for at least 6 months (maybe forever) as you need to teach yourself new technologies and possibly get a bunch of new tools.

What is the drive type?

I had a USB drive fail, and to get the contents off I needed to take the HDs out.  They were typical sATA drives and you can get a cable to hook directly into your computer.  For whatever reason the USB interface failed and maybe this is a similar problem with your drive.

After getting a drive of equal size, dd was able to then replicate the drive as best it could then DiskWarrior fixed the catalog b-tree issues on the replication.  and I got most of the data back.  99%.  This was maybe 2004ish on an even older mac, the drive was a 250gb and the dd process took a solid week 24/7.  A possible reason why dd works is that it doesn't need to seek for data, it's just slowly crawls line by line over the drive.  The clicking you maybe hearing is the drive arm seeking over the disks to find some catalog information, so it knows where files are stored.  dd is not concerned so it may bypass much of the systems which controls the arms and just crawls along.  I believe dd takes multiple passes per line compares then then writes out the data.

When you buy your new drive, buy two.  I'm personally on a WD My Passport Essential SE kick.  When on sale 1tb is around 100 bucks.

Dropped hard drive

Explain some more the sounds you hear from the drive and when they occur in the drive operations.

When it was dropped were you just playing files or were things being moved around or copied/deleted.  (keep in mind if you are using progrms like iTunes then the answer is yes, as every time a file is played it is re-saved with thier play statistics)  If this is yes, then the catalog file for the drive maybe corrupt.  In the past, used programs like DiskWarrior (mac) to deal with these types of issues.

Another option is to get an identical drive and as long as the platters are not scratched, you can swap them.  (there's plenty of technical details involved in this...)

Does your laptop recognize that the drive is connected?

If it does you may have the ability to run the unix utility dd, which will make an exact copy of the drive.  Takes a long time but does the work.  Then you can work in a protected environment to recover the main catalog file.

And you will find more technically minded folks in the How-To's Technical forums.

On getting things subtitled, an online open solution is:

http://www.universalsubtitles.org/en/

Link to the video and start adding.  How you get others to contribute is something I haven't figured out yet.  We've had one or two forum members who are deaf and would love to see things subtitled, and maybe if we start doing the english parts someone might take up the japanese.
