Info Wanted: Are the 1997 Special Edition releases preserved?
Time

russs15 wrote: In short, if we had a frame for frame SE standard and video and audio projects followed that standard, any video or any audio timed to the standard would be interchangeable.

I'm semi working on this, coming from a different angle.  negative1 had taken the frame counts from the GOUT, i've been double checking them.  Once you have those, the checking/conversion of the 1997 doesn't take that long.  For example here's the SWSE:TB (far right) [40 shots have either a different count or were added between GOUT and SWSE:TB.  and some of those are plus one or minus one frame, so those are spots which could be a problem or solution]

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtjXdIjRQo5NdFNKRG11OW11WlY1TGU5QWVnNzVsY1E

Have also done Lee Thorogood's PAL LD SWSE.  So with the other known SE videos, compiled in a similar fashion, can get the spreadsheet to identify where the missing frames exist and piece together the known SE frames.  But i'm not that certain how to check the DTS audio with the findings of the video.  In another thread recently, msycamore said he took one of the SE releases and found a missing frame or two from it.

Will be going into this more in the spreadsheet thread.  Where once an initial set of data is put out as Version.X.  Then someone will need to verify / repeat the numbers currently found.

How do others see the originaltrilogy.com community?
Time

^ This has nothing to do with the thread title anymore, might as well start a new thread.  Please when quoting, post a link so if people want to get into the debate they'll know exactly where to go.  This guys got opinions, these kind of statements are what this community will be up against when the fan preservations reach this level.  Is it worth taking the time to inform or legitimize what we do here, you all make that determination for yourself.

General Star Wars <strong>Random Thoughts</strong> Thread
Time

Tobar wrote: Oooo, is there a breakdown of what was discussed? I've been meaning to find some good coverage of the various panels.

Haven't come across any.  Was in line for the panel with a TF.n reporter who was going to write something up.  The current redesign is about the implementation of video into the site and they said that would continue.  The Ewok and Droids cartoons being an example to follow what they've done with the Clone Wars cartoon.  They talked about the Ewok Village game: http://www.starwars.com/play/online-games/ewok-village/index.html

which is like a beefed up Lemmings with some more modern task management, like I guess WoW.

There was some talk of bringing the forums back.  In what form or with the old content was not discussed.

They had some of the new blog people there.  The blog's promotional / SW celeb oriented focus is a lot to wade through for something relevant to what we do round here.

It's cannon until the current Clone Wars cartoon amends the Attack of the Clones connection / end of the Clone Wars story.  Well see if they go there when the show ends.  The official site removed much more then just Tarakovsky's contribution to SW.  He's being a little dramatic, you can't have all products getting face-time at the same time.  But it is a semi-practical way to get people to remember it.

From the SW.com panel at C6, the official site is attempting to roll back into circulation many of the old SW video projects.  The Ewoks and Droids were definitely mentioned as getting put online and the HS was nudge nudge wink winked.  Now we wait to see if it actually happens.

Myself and a few others here got a nice "Cease and Desist" email a few years ago about a project on this site which proves that LucasFilm know about this site and the things taking place here.

Which project?!

The tv recompiling system has arrived.

http://archive.org/details/tv

It's awesome, throw in any term and the system spits back 30 second relevant chunks using the closed captions.  At the moment it's the last three years of news programming, it's a great achievement.

[frame data] - _star_wars_GOUT_NTSC_widescreen (V1.0 now complete)

Think i'm going to break out the cross fades as their own shot / line in the spreadsheet.  This way the data can always be split in two and recompiled.

Did a run thru Lee Thorogood's SWSE, and things hold up.  That line of investigation will continue: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Shot-List-Spreadsheet-v0505-6-films-publicly-editable/topic/13403/

negative1, anything you remember wanting to consider when running the numbers?  Or areas which might need a second look.  The credits being one example.  Might as well get one set of numbers ready for the people considering the wiki.

The Clone Wars: Season V
Time

Was bizarre seeing a SW movie on a local channel last night.  I guess to promote the syndication of the Clone Wars they played RotS on WLNY http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WLNY-TV last night.  They had a fascinating promo saying the Clone Wars were coming but didn't explain when or if it was to be on the channel.  Flipping through the guide saw an episode of TCW at 1:30 am, Sunday morning.  ...even next sunday at that great time:

http://www.locatetv.com/tv/star-wars-the-clone-wars/5810923

Maybe they're allowed to air a few episodes at odd times to get things rolling.  Not sure why they wouldn't roll into the series with a reshow of AotC.

[For those that want to know, 'Does Your Bra Fit? airs at midnight: http://www.locatetv.com/tv/does-your-bra-fit/7674832

Puggo Strikes Back Reel Cue Marker Report

I would have thought the same process which turned out Puggo Grande would have been used to create Puggo Strikes Back.  But that doesn't seem to be the case.  Puggo Grande had all the 35mm marker, regardless if they were needed.  PSB has none of the 35mm markers, and the two 35mm reels which make up a 16mm reel have been spliced together.  To identify the two change over spots a series of home made markers were added.  Traditionally it's four consequtive frames, in PSB it's four alternating frames.  An example of a PSB homemade cue:

Example of a splice joint:

All cues available here: http://fd.noneinc.com/Reel_Changes/Reel_Changes.html

At the second reel change, there are three sets of markers.  Because of the fade over Yoda as Luke takes off, probably caused the person making the markers to jump the gun a little.

Curious what market this a made for.  As it lacks theatrical markers, it may have been closer to the original then Puggo Grande was.  So would this have been made for a more official capacity, like the supposed army or airline prints?

Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

^ D_J V3 may have slightly cropping.  An early version of the script is here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/GOUT-image-stabilization/post/309478/#TopicPost309478

########## cut off some of the black bars for faster processing (but keep mod 16)
Crop(0,96,0,-96,align=true)

########## resize to 16x9 AR, remove sides, add borders
Spline16Resize(728,388).Crop(8,10,-4,-14,align=true).AddBorders(2,58,2,58)

but this is probably at most one pixel on any edge, if that.
