Let's all say something nice about George Lucas. No insults allowed.

Probably a combo :P

Honestly, I'm simply very disappointed with the way that the cgi elements of the SE conflict with everything else. But without them, I feel that the OT feels very dated in comparison to the PT. To me, the logical thing to fix this is by going all out with a CGI reconstruction of the film. I'm not saying screw the OUT, I'm simply saying if you're going to mess with it, do it thoroughly.

Or perhaps faneditors could create PT edits that look like the OT :P

If new generations require modern CGI FX in order to be able to simply enjoy what is now and forever a classic film from 1977, then they can go screw themselves. I don't mean to be difficult, but that's how strongly I feel about it.

I wonder if George has sat down to watch Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers lately? He needs a refresher course in what he was trying to make in the first place.

I'm curious... the very first time you ever saw Star Wars, why did you like it?

I'm sorry, but if you sit a kid down with the choice between EP IV and lets say Star Trek (the new one) the visuals are going draw the kid into the film much better than the amazing storyline.

Yeah, as adults we can sit back and think - That was pretty amazing for its time. But Star Wars grabs us in childhood for the most part. And in a generation that is growing up with The Clone Wars cartoons instead of the films, do you have any clue how outdated the OOT seems?

The OOT is beautifully acted and constructed. I'm simply saying that there was a certain visual WOW factor that we all got the first time we saw the films that isn't translating through the decades, when compared to modern films. And I think it would be amazing to simply update the "WOW" factor.

Thus why this is on topic. I think George Lucas has the right idea in this.

I'm generally pretty happy with George's involvement in his projects.

- I blame Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen.

- George may have decision power over a project, but he also has a deadline. If the people working for him can't do what he asks of them fast enough... is it really his fault?

- Star Wars does need to be updated to maintain its impact on new generations.

My biggest disappointment with George is how much (with the exception of releasing the OOT) he caters to fans.

I personally am wating for versions of the OT where all computer monitors look modern, where Yoda is CG, where mattes are replaced with CGI, where space battles match the intensity of the prequel trilogy. I want to see a completely CG version of inside the JAWA Crawler. I want to see the Cantina replaced, and Greedo painted over with cgi.

So... I like that George wants to match Star Wars to his vision. I simply hope he can overstep the things in his way and do it. He has enough money and enough resources (and the technology is there.) to make the OT look as stunning as ROTS.

What? George Lucas has a son? Oh of course its Jar Jar!!!!
Time

Sometimes I wonder if newbie posts like this are exasperated sighs of relief for people who have found like minded Star Wars fans... or if they are simply way over the top simply to try and win brownie points with the regulars.

Either way, Yeah, Jar Jar is a pain... but I back  Puggo here. I just finished an hour long cut of Episode 1, and cut quite a bit of everything... but Jar Jar is fine in a comic relief capacity, so long as he is used appropriately and when necessary for pacing. It gets too bland without him.

Episode 1: The Phantom Hour (Completed)
Time

The edit is now complete! I feel like I have constructed narratively what I set out to do, and managed to keep the pacing where I like it!

Now... is anyone out there willing to throw together some cover art for this? If so, please let me know! (Also would love for someone to make me a professional looking DVD, but not holding my breath there :P)

So, expect this heavily cut, hour long edit to make it online in the next week or so! Thanks, everyone who has helped out!

a reshoot of that single shot is going to be way easier than fixing lightsabers.

The lightsabers are embeded in the very first layer of the prints that they are working with. Shadows and reflections have been added, and anywhere there is a larger-than average lightsaber shot, all of the picture data behind it has been lost, meaning that a LOT has to be restored, fixed, and reinserted. Plus, you have to do that with high speed sequences where each frame is different from the last.

This is a single shot of an arm... and considering that lightsabers, while being a bit off color and shape, continue to act in a manner expected of lightsabers... I personally feel that the continuity issue with a bleeding arm is the larger, and easier to fix, issue.

Sorry if that came out a bit strong... for some reason, my marathon of the blurays has stuttered ever since seeing that shot...

New petition...for redoing the special editions
Time

Oddly enough, I was logging in to start a thread about this exact thing.

Watching A New Hope, I was incredibly disappointed with the jump around in quality. And I completely agree.

I do NOT want any of the live action stuff refilmed (with the limited possibility of the initial 3P0, R2 scenes on Tatooine. The horrible color inaccuracies don't appear to be fixable.

But seriously, why not give us a version of the OT that looks totally modern. Bits and pieces of it already do, but parts of the film could be completely redone. By attempting to preserve some of the original special effects, Lucas is continuing to cheat himself of what he really wants: An OT that matches the PT.

Strangely enough, this alone is why the OUT is not being considered for release in any decent quality: Because George does not feel that enough has been changed to warrant viewing both versions of the film.

But imagine that that shot at the beginning of the Tantive 5 (That sticks out as a total eyesore versus the very much cleaned up Star Destroyer) was replaced with a RotS quality cgi version. That there are Tie Fighters added to the scene to make the battle bigger and more important. Imagine that some of the most dated ship interiors were replaced with a digital bluescreen, then replaced with the beautiful CG interiors we've gotten in the PT... I mean, look at that ugly brown door on the Tantive.

Now replace the droids in the JAWA transport with decent looking ones (get rid of the walking trash can, etc.) Repopulate the Cantina with new cgi creatures.

Anything that is not a physical main actor should be fair game to change up...

If Lucas sat down down, and put the OT in Post Production in the same way you would an unreleased film, and fixed it with modern effects the way you would a modern film, we would have something absolutely beautiful and amazing, complete with the performances that we all love.

And... with a totally altered film to show off, with a very very visible difference from the original... I think Lucas would release the OUT.

Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions

I was reading up on the THX Calibration thing. It is supposed to be an Auto Adjust setting for all of your future home electronics... an integrated chip that fixes everthing for you.

I do have to say that for strict Bluray Playback, I was happier with my old Walmart Magnavox one because it didn't have any built in video settings. I'm struggling trying to get the settings right on both my bluray player and my tv... makes it hell to calibrate... Maybe this new THX stuff will be worth it.

Star Wars Blu Ray Impressions
Time

Alright... I've watched through the first half hour of A New Hope (1-4)

TPM: Quality is all over the place. Some scenes look amazing, some look like upconverted dvds. Color was more accurate for the most part, but I literally had to thoroughly calibrate my tv when watching this, just to make sure it wasn't my TV making the quality change. The warm setting pushes Tatooine a little too warm for my liking. Nice to see CGI Yoda.

AotC: Quality is definitely better than TPM, but still varies from scene to scene. Really enjoyed the addition of Shmi's voice in Anakin's nightmare.

RotS: This was friggin stellar, in every aspect. Everything has been blended much better without softening the picture. I used to hate the R2/Buzz droid scene because it looked so out of place. It now looks great. I'm not sure if this was altered slightly, but either way, definitely a step in the right direction. Picture is pristine, Avatar Quality. I will admit... this makes all of Palpatine's weird faces stand out even more during lightsaber battles.

Prequel Trilogy Audio is near orgasmic to my ears. Everything has been mixed in so much better, and sounds amazing on a 6.1/7.1 setup (I've got an older DTS ES receiver, and it still wowed and amazed every second of the film. Lightsaber battles especially)

ANH: So far, this does look pretty amazing considering. You can easily see which scenes were remastered for the different special editions, as quality seems to migrate between three major pieces. Some Tatooine scenes with the droid have odd color, but I think that is simply because other parts of the film have been cleaned up with colors fixed so much that it throws it in contrast. I hate R2's new rocks, mainly because they are only visible from shots in front of him... shots behind him looking out don't appear to include the rocks...

I personally, while not fond of either, prefer this Krayt Dragon Call. It still sounds horrid, but it actually sounds like a sound a human could make...

Other than that, the audio still sounds great, though dated. Everything here is mixed well too... I enjoy the louder surround channels and clear dialogue.

The prequel deleted scenes are very disappointing, often with questionable quality and quirks... The lost Twently is particularly odd... it made me wonder if it is a precaution against fanedits.

I'll post what I think of the rest as soon as I get a chance to watch.

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

Has anyone considered that BETTER sales may promt Lucas to release the OOT?

I mean, the guy obviously takes issue with releasing them for his own personal, stubborn reasons. Meaning no matter how hard we push, petition, etc. He's not going to move on it. He wants us to see Star Wars this way... so why not make the guy happy? Wouldn't a positive view of diehard fans be better than one of total disagreement, offending eachother?

Let's say every star wars fan out there boycotting this release picked a single day to purchase the set, possibly from a single retailer/website. Perhaps even from a very small online store, that is going to have to make a huge unprecedented order to meet demand. Perhaps we could organize the purchase ofThousands, maybe tens of thousands of copies, bought in good faith, on the same day that a letter is sent to George and anyone else slightly connected to him, stating "We bought the films, we'll view them the way you want us to. In return, will you please release them the way we want to view them as well"

I'm just not understanding how this boycott is supposed to affect a multimillionaire who feels very little financial impact either way. Perhaps attempting to work out some quid pro quo is the way to go...

Info Wanted: Why go BLU - Fanedit Lover's Obligation???
Time

I was just curious about this from a legal standpoint. As faneditors, we have an obligation to avoid breaking the law with our works. This is done by not selling edits for profit and by MAKING SURE ANYONE WHO VIEWS THEM OWNS AN ORIGINAL COPY.

Up until this point, there has been no “Official” retail copy of Star Wars available for purchase in a high definition format. Thus, when downloading edits or preservations in HD (from HDTV copies), owning the DVD copy has been the legal basis for being able to view these edits.

Now that the Bluray copies have been released, doesn’t that mean that anyone who downloads a high-definition source edit should be required to own a high definition retail copy to fulfill that same legal obligation?
