The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)

Hey Hal, have you ever considered renaming your ST edits?

I love how your PT edits use the novel names from the in between books.
It’s an nice reference, and honestly they seem to fit better.

I was thinking, now that we’ve seen the whole trilogy,
that it might be cool if you did the same using the Zahn Thrawn titles.

Episode 7
Heir to the Empire

Episode 8
Dark Force Rising
(yes, Kerr used it for his #3, but I don’t think it’d go over badly)

Episode 9
The Last Command

Is it possible to imply Leia has been in poor health since her spacewalk in TLJ? Add coughing in both movies, maybe dub in a line of some Resistance member with their back to the camera suggesting she will never fully recover, even put a single word in the crawl or something. Her death already comes out of nowhere but cutting the Maz scene (essential to do, I hate it) would make that even worse.

I think adding something in the crawl would help a lot. It would explain her diminished role and hopefully make her scenes stand out slightly less.

I would remove that Rey is trying to commune with the Jedi, and cut out the “Be with Me” portion of the training. I feel it’s actually more powerful just being heard at the end, as if in that moment she innately calls upon them.

Info Wanted: Which version of the Original Trilogy preservations to watch?

I’m in the minority here, but if you grew up with VHS or Laserdisc, I’d highly suggest the JawsTDS Return of the Gout releases. IMHO, it’s the highest quality “Official” version you’ll find (upscaled, but a single source).

For fun, you can also check out Hal9000’s Special Edition audio (cut to the theatrical length) which are absolutely beautiful. (Personally, I prefer the GOUT RotJ audio, but only because it sounds more similar to the SW/ESB mixes. The RotJ SE audio is much cleaner/sounds digital in comparison to the other two’s analog twang).

I would have Kylo commune with the helmet before seeing Palatine - this way, it breaks up the initial pace just slightly, and underscores the fact that his life has been driven by voices in his head. This gives us an immediate payoff, so badly needed.

Start the Kylo attack at the beginning with the widest shot of him running after people. Star Wars is supposed to start with GOOD and BAD established clearly. By starting with him chasing them down, you know there’s no other motivation. Remove the backslide 😑

Move Lando’s Got a bad feeling about this to the end of that scene after they leave and he returns to the window.

Remove Ren’s His “granddaughter” is enough.

Swap Palpatine’s “your grandfather, Darth Vader” to “Darth Vader, your grandfather”

Trim 3PO throughout. Keep “you did not mention me, but I am fine” line in. Missed opportunity for 3PO to learn about Leia.

I missed the 16 hours thing too. I remember only 8 hours left 🤷🏼‍♂️

Leia’s scenes fall squarely on the writers. All of Rey’s dialogue in them was just poorly written.

Just remove Luke’s “I was wrong”. The line drips with the “subtle” message: “Ignore the last movie.”

IMHO the Fox fanfare should be added to the ST.

This allows for a potential solution to including Palpatine’s speech. During the searchlight portion, add small sound clips of the probe Droid from TESB. Gradually make them louder, audibly distorting the fanfare sound to correlate with this. Simultaneously, add static to the sound.

As the Lucasfilm logo shows up. Start glitching the screen.
Then pause the fade in/fade out process with regular minimal visual glitches.

During this, play the transmission clip from Fortnite. When it ends, fade to black.

Then proceed regularly to “A long, long time ago…”

(There following incorporates pieces from DZ-330)

STAR WARS

Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Terror! In a move meant to inspire hope, legendary Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, long hidden away in solitude, has sacrificed himself in a decisive blow against the FIRST ORDER. With their hero vanquished and government in ruins however, the Galaxy finds itself frozen in fear at the apparent reemergence of Skywalker’s most dangerous adversary.

In response to the mysterious missive, Supreme Leader
KYLO REN seeks to unlock the
power of his former master,
determined to end the war and
silence the echos of the past.

Meanwhile REY, under the guidance of
General Leia Organa, continues
her Jedi training, searching
for a way to commune
with the Jedi of the past. Only through them can she face the secrets of her own past, and in so doing unlock the only remaining hope for the future…

No worries. You may have noticed I’m fond of the standard movie “things happen in threes”, so I’m probably grasping at that like usual. 😛

The scene itself is probably the one where Luke feels OT the most. Sadly, that flies in the face of the entire rest of the movie.

I’ll be watching this today, review coming.

Conceptually, I’ve always thought that Rey shouldn’t walk up and give Luke the lightsaber until TLJ. TFA, IMHO, would end perfectly if Rey and Chewie show up, immediately cut to Luke in his hut saying “Go away” Chewie blows off the door. The movie ends with Luke saying “Where’s Han?”, Which circle wipes to the credits. The line has more emotion in the same film as the death, gives us the OT payoff feeling TFA’s ending struggled with.

I’d then spend the first Luke scenes of TLJ with Rey trying to follow Luke around the island. Move the lightsaber handoff to after this, so that he tosses it. Then cut elsewhere. Next time it cuts back to Luke/Rey, they’re sitting and discussing “you think I’m going to come out with a lightsaber and face down the whole First Order”. Proceed as preferred.

Who knows though, maybe your edits will sway my opinion. 😉

I’ve noticed a similar number of us here wish you’d included the Caretakers in some way so you could include the 3rd lesson scene as wanted the alternate release of Ep. 3.

I know you’re unlikely to do this officially with unfinished shots, but I was wondering if I could nudge you to release an “alternate workprint” with that single change implemented for pre-Ep 9 viewing? I won’t have my editing computer for a few months or I’d do it myself 😑

Thanks for the PM.

Best viewing order to introduce Star Wars to children?
Time

So:

JawsTDS Return of the Gout
Star Wars and Empire

Maul Fan Film

Hal9000 Ep 1
seciors Ep 2

Clone Wars original 2D. Adigitalman Single film version

L8wrtr’s Ep 3

Solo
Rogue One

SW Revisited
Empire Revisited
Jedi Schorman’s HDTV 2.0

I’d go theatrical 7 and 8 (if there’s an edit of 8 that adds the 3rd challenge with minimal other changes, I’d suggest that.) This is their generation’s Star Wars, and it’s better to let them experience the same as their friends.

STAR WARS: EP VI -RETURN OF THE JEDI "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - ** PRODUCTION HAS NOW RESTARTED **

I don’t understand why there’s no entertainment for the Emperor. No personal symphony, no bubble opera… Clearly the fight provides it. But before then, that room looks boring for an Emperor.

On that clip (the first one), drop the pitch of the “er” in “Mother” and “Do”. Also try and stretch “Do”, adding a fade out after adding reverb.

Clearly, your project is a huge undertaking and I appreciate the care you’re taking in getting this huge release ready. With that said - this is a question and a nudge I guess. Do you have everything that you’d need for the smaller encode with the hard-coded subs and English/Commentary only? Would you be willing to encode and release those while gathering the remaining materials for your complete Reference quality set?
