Info: another 16mm print of SW on eBay
Time
honestly,

i think i jumped the gun on this one..

i did have the second highest bid 1600,
but that was only because i had put in 1000
a few seconds earlier (and would have stopped)..

i think if we hadn't bid, it might have gone for about
$1100 (which was the next lowest)...so it was some
crazy last minute bidding that drove the cost up..

granted, it is rare...but based on historical prices that
have been mentioned, probably it should have gone
for lower....i guess i don't feel so bad now......

But it also is likely to have some noticeable film grain, color fading issues, problems on the borders, scratches, inferior sound, uneven lighting, poor blacks and whites, and who knows what other imperfections.

i for one, actually WANT to see/hear all this....

the best part of the 8mm versions i just recently watched from the
transfers, was hearing the projector sound, seeing the grain/noise/dust/etc..

if i want to (i know most of you DONT) i can always watch the one of
several 720p/1080p conversions of the SE (which i DONT mind)...
for clear pictures/sound/effects/etc........to me that is almost starting
to get boring....

i'm much more interested in all the 'low-fi' versions because
1) i've never owned a vcr (started collecting with laserdisc)
2) never had access to bootlegs [until now]
3) never had 8mm or 16mm versions
4) never listened to the vinyl versions
5) i've only watched the original SW EP IV less than 20 times

so most of this stuff still seems 'new' and 'fresh' to me regardless
of the condition......

i'm not sure what anyone else expects.....but just getting a projector
to watch it, would be part of the fun for me...

Anybody else having problems getting ebay pages to load right now?

not sure.....but can try ebay.co.uk, or the other sites to check?

first of all, i dont want anyone to get there hopes up too HIGH yet.

also, i don't expect to place the burden of bidding on any other people
out there, if they can't afford it....this is a hobby, that i don't mind
spending it on .... i know you can't promise me $$$$ in a public
forum, especially when there are trust issues at stake (being anonymous)
etc....

so , also don't expect me to spend a gigantic amount on it either by
myself (i'm not that RICH)......just let me know if you're bidding on
it.....that's all i can ask.....i'll let you know how much i'm planning to bid...

disclosure : NO I DONT work for lucas, lucas arts, lucasfilm, fox etc
(just saying that isn't much)...but i doubt i would be here talking about
this if i was..

good luck everyone, keep your fingers crossed for tomorrow..

I dunno man. You tell
me. If so many prints are out there and so many people are doing what we're trying to do, then why are we trying to do it in the first place? Shouldn't we just be trying to get a copy from one of the apparently "many" people that have done this before?

good point, i've been keeping an eye on these boards for the last
couple of years, so i figured something might have come up by now...

but i guess not? maybe its just a case of timing/technology coming together.

also, it depends on the community...since there are so many projects
going on.......(some have completed), the vinyl restoration ones,
the 8mm versions, the multiple laserdisc conversions (and the upcoming
XO one)....the many, many dvd/hd/1080p versions..

really, what is left? i'm not sure...but isn't getting this version, still
considered rather 'niche'? i don't see hardly as much activity concerning
this version (or at least going by number of posts)..compared to the
more visible re-edits/fan edits....which is fine.....since almost EVERYONE
has seen this movie, and this would be another restoration/preservation..

that being said, i'm sure there's got to be some private owners that have
their own versions/conversions made/done...and of course due to copyrights
have kept it private......maybe the owners are rich/indifferent/waiting for
the right time.....but in this case, i see a community here that shares,
and even puggo said he has access to another print.....so it's just a mattter
of time before one shows up..

finally, YES, like i indicated earlier, the price =$380 with 1 day left,
and as indicated will go up....so i will be bidding on it....i'm not sure
who the other bidders are (cause ebay doesn't show their ids anymore),
or how high it will go...but i do have a semi-fixed amount i will not
go over... IF and that's a big IF someone here on the board gets it,
i will definitely donate to the cause.....the bidding ends tomorrow around
noon (my time)...so i'll come back at lunchtime and check on it..(i do
have a proxy bid setup in case)...

I'd be interested.

FWIW, I wouldn't make a big deal out of this. If we could get Empire and Jedi as well, we'd have HD versions of all the original films.

If Lucasfilm finds out what has happened, they may be even more aggressive about getting up all of these prints.

how long have prints been out there?
and how long have people been making telecines/scans/etc?

i would hardly think they would start 'cracking down' just
because a lone 16 (not 35mm) print got out, and people
were playing around with it..

anyways, i'm keeping an eye on the auction, and it hasn't
moved much yet....i guess in the next couple of days
we'll know..

Triple post! Anyone wanna put it back up on the Noid, or at least refer me to where I can find the old one?

I found this set recently at mininova
http://www.mininova.org/tor/1327265
http://www.mininova.org/tor/1327262
http://www.mininova.org/tor/1327260

Took me about a week, but I got ANH and ROTJ, and almost all of ESB. It seems stuck at 98% at the moment.

i have them all,
maybe i can try to seed the rest of it..

Wait a day or so before going crazy bidding... I've got a lead on a print that I might start transfering this month. I've sent a message to the individual in an attempt to determine if the one on eBay is better quality or not. I should be able to report back tomorrow. There's still 3 days left in the auction.

And please don't expect 1080p from my Workprinter. Although 16mm film can indeed produce great results, you'd need a higher-end scanner (like the one GL has apparently mothballed - heh) to achieve THAT.

Oh, I know, but the community would have a good clarity print is all I mean. Plus maybe we can get a hook up in the future or something. It would be sweet if your lead could supply a better transfer, less money to spend.

check your pm paulisdead..

good, do let us know if this one is worth pursuing or not...
i'd hate to spend that much knowing there was a better
print floating around..

i too wait until the last minute when bidding, just to see how things
go....if it is indeed worth this much.....so much the better..

I've seen decent prints get into the $800 range. Even a "flat" (full frame) print went for around $600. Empire and Jedi are more rare, and go well past $100.

As for theories of Lucas buying these prints...I saw the usual suspects bidding on these prints all the time. Their feedback history painted a picture of film collectors with a wide range of interests, and money to burn! ;)

ok, i guess i am pretty naive, i was thinking $thousands...really only $800?

and why if empire and jedi are more rare, would they be a lot cheaper?
are the numbers off?

wouldn't it be pretty easy to get everyone to contribute and just pay
more than that amount?

heck, i might do it, if it really is that low...anyways...lets see how
it goes..

Since when are dvd's used for broadcast, they are not HD quality in any sense of the word. Don't the station have Digital Video Tapes in some HD format?

The films were scanned by lowry at much higher resolution than dvd (2k or 4k?) and lucasfilm has those digital video masters, which they gave lower quality copies of to stations like cinemax better quality than the dvd still not full resolution equal to a blu ray release.

i was just taking a guess at the source..but after some digging...
yes, the studios do give some kind of high definition source
to the stations..more info...
http://www.hometheaterblog.com/hometheater/2006/04/mailbag-hd-movies-and-the-resolution-of-film/

however, problems are occuring, because some stations are
compressing the HD signal, like comcast :

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1008271

i have downloaded some 'supposed' 1080p versions of SW, that aren't
from wookiegroomer.....but dang, they look good!!!!! my tv only does
1080i, and 720p...but still they look pretty sharp...so you're right,
they did come from some HD masters...

Okay...

I've tried three times, now. The first was made burning the folders directly with nero, the last two were using a new ISO one with and one without the seemless layer option.

granted, it's an aggravating issue....but have you burned DL media before?
because this might impact any future burns you do..

finally, depending on where you are...can someone else burn the files
for you, or do you want a copy sent to you in the meantime?

That reminds me. Has anyone else watched the DVD-9 with the changes & trivia subtitles? All the typos seem fixed, but the credits seem to be ever so slightly different than on the DVD-5 because a subtitle comes up saying "That's me!" underneath Harrison Ford's name, whereas on the DVD-5 it came up under Adywan's name.
Just a heads up there, I certainly wouldn't expect Adywan to go back and redo anything else after all this work. (especially for something so minor)
