Well i have a PS3 and i can play my 1080p mkv HD movies just fine without having to re-encode them or use an expensive burner. i can usually fit a movie on a DVD-9 or split over 2 discs. you can also make blu-ray player compatible HD discs with chapters & menus by using plain old dual layer discs without re-encoding too.
Good luck with getting any new movies for you HD-DVD player :) As has been said HD-DVD is dead and will just fade into obscurity. It won't even have the nostalgia value that laserdiscs have. I think it was pretty much doomed from the start. Microsoft made a HUGE mistake when they didn't build their X-Box360 with a built in drive and a HDMI port. That could have tipped the scales in favour of HD-DVD somewhat.
adywan,
i totally agree with you, up until a certain point...yes, the xbox 360 could probably play mkv movies also...
(check out tversity : http://tversity.com/home
the fact that i can create hd-dvd movies, burn them on regular or DL dvd discs, means
i will NEVER run out movies....(****** COUGH, bluray rips->hd dvd COUGH******)
that combined with all the HD rips out there, means the actual format is irrelevant,
only the player is important.....and $50 for the player+ (xbox360) was cheaper
than supporting any sony player (yes, i know other people make bluray players,
but it will be a cold day before i support them or the ps3).... i'm sure a standalone
hd-dvd player is dirt cheap compared to bluray players also....
that and the fact that bluray movies are pretty expensive,
compared to regular dvds.......
so while i'm watching SW ep 1,2,3,4,5,6 in hd-dvd,
how long is it going to be before the appear in bluray format?
(and yes, someone could convert these files over to bluray,
burn them on a bluray disc, etc.......hmmmm......has anyone tried that either??)
