GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time

alright,

i ran my first test, using the first 5 minutes of episode 4, HC enc 0.23 (there's about 1 million options for this, anyone know some good settings??????), and a few hours later got a result..

i think i may need to tweak some settings in the script, or the changes might be very subtle...

i tried to write a script to compare the two videos, vertically,

but couldn't get it to work.......(i actually put a reduceBy2 in front, and that didn't work either)..

#StackVertical("M:\data\movie\dvd\star wars ep #\4-gout\VTS_03_1.VOB","M:\data\movie\dvd\star wars ep 4-gout\gout.mpg" )

then i tried to overlay the clips, and i kept getting an error back from loading the .VOB

#clip1 = DirectShowSource("M:\data\movie\dvd\star wars ep 4-gout\VTS_03_1.VOB")
#clip2 = DirectShowSource("M:\data\movie\dvd\star wars ep 4-gout\gout.mpg")
# Overlay(clip1, clip2, mode="blend", opacity=0.5)

awhile ago, i loaded the Haali media splitter, but i think i'm going to uninstall it, as it is causing a lot

of problems..

anyways, its cool fiddling around with this stuff......................................

i started working on a frame reference guide for the scene changes, here's a part of the spreadsheet (not done yet)

i'll post a link if i finish it..........................its very time consuming watching for each scene change..

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE DVD NOW.  WARNER BROS. STATED THAT THE ORIGINAL RUN TIME FOR THE MOVIE WAS 3 HRS. 30 MINS.  I REALLY CAN'T SEE WHAT ELSE COULD'VE BEEN IN THE MOVIE.  TO ME IT WAS PERFECTLY CUT.  ALL OF HEATH LEDGER'S PERFORMANCES WERE LEFT IN THE MOVIE.

BTW, IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET THEN YOU SHOULD WATCH BATMAN GOTHAM KNIGHT.  THE STORIES TIE DIRECTLY INTO THE MOVIE.

this was one of the most predictable , boring movies i have ever had the misfortune of watching lately..

jack nicholson was much better, the first batman was best, ALL  of the rest of them sucked, especially batman begins....

harvey dent was lame.....and the joker, eh......

oh well, you know they can't make a sequel (apologies to heath, who tried , but didn't quite make it)...

IT WAS A FUN MOVIE, AND THERE WAS MOTIVATION FOR EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN THAT MOVIE.  WALL*E'S MOTIVATION WAS HIS LOVE OF THE EVE.  EVE'S MOTIVATION WAS HER MISSION.  THE CAPTAIN'S MOTIVATION WAS EARTH.  AUTO'S MOTIVATION WAS KEEPING THE HUMANS AWAY FROM EARTH.  THE WHOLE PLOT OF THE MOVIE WAS THE REBUILDING OF EARTH.  DAMN, EVEN MY KIDS UNDERSTOOD THAT.

OH, AND NOT ONLY WAS ROBOTS HORRIBLE, BUT IT WAS ALSO A BOX OFFICE FLOP.  IT DIDN'T EVEN MAKE ANY REAL MONEY ON VIDEO OR DVD.

 1) ROBOTS DONT  FEEL 'LOVE" DUH

2) the captain never wanted to go back to earth, since the other robots were preventing them

3) EVES mission was a coverup

4) AUTO didn't have a 'motivation' , it was just programming...........robots dont have 'motivation', it's programming

5) the plot was never about rebuilding earth, it was about RECYLING JUNK, which is the most boring plot point ever....

I hope your kids get a better education in school, than this movie...

for your information : box office wise, for 'robots',

The film was released March 11, 2005 in the United States and Canada and grossed $36 million in 3,776 theaters its opening weekend, ranking #1 at the box office.

It grossed a total of $260.7 million worldwide — $128.2 million in the United States and Canada and $132.5 million in other territories.

for wall-e,

Walt Disney Pictures released it in the United States and Canada on June 27, 2008. The film grossed $23.1 million on its opening day, and $63 million during its opening weekend in 3,992 theaters

made more in its opening weekend, but is one of the POOREST performing movies for pixar....yeah, let's wait and see, and

yeah it will make back its budget ($180 million), but how much more????????????????????????????????????

Just finished watching the '04 DVD version of Star Wars
Time

i'm hardly the person qualified to answer your question..

i think that by showing that i really haven't watched it that much....

(although i do think the original 'a new hope'-'star wars' is one of my all time favorite/influential films..)

i can't really say that Lucas has 'lost it'..

i've only seen the 'SE' versions once or twice, and i liked the changes....they didn't bother me..

i like the fact that the SE versions (which I HAVE watched on laserdisc) are great/clear quality...with amazing sound...

i'm totally the wrong person to ask about the comparison of Lucas from back then until 'now',

because for me...................there is hardly any difference (and yes, i know about ALL the changes)..

to me , George Lucas was a genius back then, and still is, i liked the prequels (but i don't own them, except for EP 3),

i liked some of the animated Star Wars, and i'm looking forward to the new CG animated theatrical version...

yeah, he's made mistakes, yeah he's done some unpopular things, yeah, he's aggravated people...

but i don't really care....because I HAVE ALL THE ORIGINALS in a ton of different formats, so i really don't get

too worked up about trying to

1) wonder if there's something wrong with Lucas

2) wonder if i should bother getting yet another version of star wars (unless there's reason to)...i'm more of a collecter

3) wonder if the changes in the SE should have been made or not, because THEY were made, and you are free to ignore them,

as many people here on these boards do...

so, yeah, after watching a ton of documentaries, this is what i get out of it.............[along with opinions from these boards]...

1) limited budget -> more creativity -> not quite what George wanted (but fans seem to want it)

2) high budget-> different creativity-> more of what George wanted (but not necessarily what fans wanted)

--------------------------------------

all the 04 dvd's, full screen and widescreen

bonus discs from the 04 -

all the 06 dvd's, full screen and widescreen

all the OOT bonus discs...

the definitive collection THX lasersdiscs

the fox full screen and widescreen laserdiscs

the faces THX laserdiscs

the Japanese special collection laserdiscs

and a lot more....

yeah, i know i'm slow.....i only watched each

original movie once in the theaters, (and the

SE versions once each) and less

than 5-10 times total altogether...

i've watched a lot of the fanedits, but

most of those (like adywans) i will only

the last few pixar movies been pretty hit and miss for me..

cars - HUGE HIT, ratatouille- miss............and now this.......   wall-e.....

it's the first pixar movie that made me ambivalent............

You didn't like Nemo or Ratatouille, but you liked Cars?  Seriously?  Cars was ... well ... pretty awful in my opinion, I honestly don't get what people like about it, at all.

I will agree on Monsters and Incredibles - I never cared much for the former, and The Incredibles was ... well ... damn good (ha! And you thought I was going to use a pun).

But back to my original question(s):

What about "Nemo" did you dislike, and what about "Cars" actually worked for you?  Just curious really.

i should start out with by saying 'toy story' is one of my all time favorite movies, right up there with 'star wars', gasp!

some background

----------------------

i've always liked/been interested in computer graphics, since the 70's....and later....especially 'tron' another HUGE favorite of mine...

i waited for the day that movies would be made using computer graphics only...................and 'toy story' blew me away....the story,

the graphics, etc.....(the 2nd toy story was ok..)...and bugs life was terrible..(same with antz...thats another story though)....

anyways, back to the thread...........so i followed each and every cg movie that came out, with the results i mentioned above,

but something happened.......(especially by the time the horrible 'shrek' came out)................the movies were no longer impressive,

the visuals were done by everyone and their brother, and then something about a 'story' came into play, plot, characters, etc...

so i waited until a movie would come out again that had cool graphics, and a decent plot..........not until the 'incredibles' did that happen..

but unlike the other disney-esque stories that were out there..............this one had an adult feel to it...................................

something that none of the movies , except 'cars' had...............ok, i admit, i'm a HUGE fan of cars, racing cars, nascar, driving cars, etc...

so i had a huge bias to that, along with seeing the previews...............'cars' is probably the penultimate movie, approaching 'toy story'

like mythic properties to me......the graphics/story/humor, everything just 'clicked'..........................'nemo' on the other, while visually

appealing, fell flat in everything else.................the main character, and supporting cast bored me (especially 'ellen's character), the humor was dull, the

audience purely aimed at kids, no suspense, no drama, and nothing memorable to me..........so i pretty much ignored it.

by the way, i have seen each and every one of these in the theaters, and am not comparing them at home, which i guess is a totally

different experience..

it's the first pixar movie that made me ambivalent............it wasn't bad...

but it wasn't very good either...the story was a complete bore, there

was not motivation for anything that happened, and the graphics were average....

no pixar slipped up, and the public (not that i care) also seems to think so,

have you seen the ratings/reviews/box office? hardly a dent..................and

the long term implications don't looks so great either........

i like the trailers, i like robots, and it looked promisingl......................however,

finally seeing what seems like robot-romance-environment-saving-plot was

boring me to tears............................not one bit of humor, action, or anything

worthwhile to make it special........

pixar needs to go back to the drawing boards.........bring on cars 2, toy story 3, and incredibles 2..

i'm waiting......

Wouldn't it be awesome if the Blu-Ray of Star Wars was like this...?
Time
seventiesfilmnut said:

If Star Wars was released like this I think everyone would be happy, and George would be even richer - everyone wins! I much prefer the original cuts of the films (though Adywan's version of A New Hope is my preferred version at present), but after seeing the 12GB HD versions of the Original trilogy recently it's impossible to go back to the GOUT versions now.

sorry if the quotes are out of order..............that's kind of my point, if you want SOME version in HD , you can FIND it, if you look

(especially on these boards).............................

Funny I was thinking exactly the same thing the other day when watching The Final Cut on blu-ray (imported it into UK from Amazon.com). This has to be one of the best box sets ever in terms of features and sheer quality. And four different cuts of Blade Runner as well all in HD. Ridley obviously has his finger on the pulse, unlike Luca$! He also seems excited by the enthusiasm for his films as well with different introductions to each cut of the film, and yet another audio commentary. My projector only accepts the 560p HD but even at this resolution the final cut looks simply stunning - better than I remember it ever looking.

lets look at the 7 versions (2 of which are not here, the san diego preview, and the US broadcast version).......

ok, so they're in HD, so what? 1) final cut - call it ridley scottism - pulls a lucas, and puts in extra stuff that doesn't need to be there...

2) workprint.............................yes i know what it is, and why is it here again?   3) us theatrical , finally for purists....ok, fine....it works for me

4) international .........................not needed, but ok its here if that's what you saw......5) directors cut...............yet another version with major changes - another novelty like fanedit from ridley..

so we have, what 1 version that actually needs to be in HD..............and four others that change/point out problems/unnecessary additions or subtractions..

how is that worthwhile?

It's ironic... back in the early 90s Lucasfilm could do no wrong in terms of releases, and where way ahead of the pack - back then the THX Star Wars Laserdiscs got rave reviews everywhere, especially the collectors edition released in 1993 (I think). This was when Lucas still seemed to care about the quality of his original cuts. That plus the release of the superb Anthology soundtrack boxed set... ahhhh those where the days! What went wrong....

my point exactly...........................THEY ARE AVAILABLE, and dirt cheap also................the sound quality is awesome, and yes, even though

i have a 'small' 32 inch widescreen............laserdisc images are sharp and clear for me.....(ok sue me, i have slightly lousy vision).............

they are quality releases!!!

"all the OOT versions are still out there on laserdisc, and the new versions are on dvd......

and you think they should be re-released again?"

- I don't quite understand where you are coming with this statement Negative 1. Aren't you planning to transfer an original 35mm print of Empire?!? Surely this means you want the original in better quality than is currently the case? Perhaps I'm missing your point - lol!

if you actually read any of my comments/threads/especially concerning hi-definition etc....i'm consistent

1) i advocate platform agnosticism........................................no really i am...............................digital files

all the way.............................why? no resolution limits..............no framerate limits...........................use widely available codecs..

and of course, you don't have to worry about filesizes...

2) ok, if i have to push a format............................yeah, i prefer HD DVD over bluray, but that's for my own reasons........

3) the transfer from 35mm format->  nnnnnnnnn format, where nnnnn= High def, dvd, neutral file format, etc.........................

not everyone wants to play around with weird formats, and resolutions.................right????????

so we have to pick something.........................checking out the scans/resolutions and formats for films/video is something i'm very new too..

we have the following standards 4k/2k/HD/SD........................obviously doing 4k is not worth it / price wise/logistically (unless we had a 70mm print)....

that leaves 2k/HD/SD...................................2k is more realistic.................(for archival purposes), but can anybody play 2k files/formats on their

computer, media player? very few.............right........................... HD is a nice intermediate because it deals with known resolutions / frames/ formats..

unfortunately for us, there ARE 2 FORMATS, (despite what adywan says).....HD DVD, and bluray..............although there really isn't ANY TECHNICAL

difference (besides storage size) in using one or the other, they both support similar resolutions/frame rates/etc.........................

so i'm actually shooting for a HD transfer because that's the DE FACTO standard for now................no point in ticking off everyone with a

2182 x 1348 resolution transfer???????????????????????????

i hope this makes some sense, and is not too rambling.................

basically, i am sticking to predetermined formats because they exist............................. also, i respect LUCASFILMS (but not necessarily agree) with

whatever policy they have, and if they never release anything Star wars related in high definition (OOT/SE) etc............thats up to them.........but

it obviously won't stop people here, and like i keep saying, even though the SE is out there in high definition, and people here choose to ignore it,

downplay it, or pay little attention to them.............................that's not Lucasfilms fault......................

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now
Time

adywan:

1) i need to be a little clearer about what i'm doing.................a couple of things................HD DVD versions of the

wookiegroomer encodes.........................................AND future HD DVD encodes of YOUR versions....so both basically..

hopefully by then, i will have a much better handle on conversion / burning etc...........................

2) the image was a capture from your source, scaled down, and jpg'ed.....not to be indicative of quality (of course)

3) granted microsoft is evil..............................but sony is more evil......so it's a choice of a lesser evil...........anyways,

i waited a long long time before i got the xbox 360, so i got the 'newer' chip, and have NEVER had 1 problem, glitch,

lockup or anything ever...................................then again, i'm not a 'hardcore' gamer anymore, so i rarely play games anymore...

(which i hear a lot of ps3 people say also, since they really don't have any games for it either...................pretty sad right?)....

the hd dvd i picked up (just like laserdiscs).....because its cheaper, the discs are cheaper....(and even

though i could actually buy the bluray drive etc............why bother), i have at least 50+ hd/bluray rips downloaded already (40 % - 720p,

40 % - 1080p , and 20 % are FULL bluray rips)....so its not like i want to pay the RIP OFF prices for crappy bluray movies that dont even

deserve to be highdef in the first place.....most of these are action/sci-fi/adventure movies................and then i have a small library of 30+

hd dvd movies, that are all new that cost half that price or less.........................and of course there's some movies that are hd dvd exclusive,

that WILL NEVER come out on bluray either........................................................all the other high def content i have has been HDTV rips...

so they aren't on either format.....................

that's why a neutral .mkv, .avi or whatever container is the best for that purpose, no file size limits, no framerate limits, etc ...etc....

yes from a distribution, user perspective, not everybody's up to speed, has players, software, or the right hardware to watch..

but you yourself said hardware is getting cheaper......................and the US is switching to digital tv next year, so eventually everyone

will be able to view these..

it's better to be future proofed now..

again, you need a huge gateway movie to get everybody to step up to high definition....................i'm still wondering why there

is so little interest on this board??????.................................i'm sorry but vhs, and now even laserdisc/dvd have been superseced...

it's time to move on people..................................................make the leap..................come over to the 'high-def' side........................

THE STAR WARS SAGA - 1080P AVCHD DVD-9 for PS3 & Blu-Ray players - Episodes 1, 4 & 5 available now

here's the post on converting .h264 to hd dvd

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showpost.php?p=13940881&postcount=2934

basically..

=================================================================

Here is an outline of what I did to get a H264 encoded file into a HD-DVD formatted DVD disk.

Software used
-------------------------------------------------
AVISynth, I used version 2.5.7
MEGui from Doom9 forum
DGmpgdec I used version 1.5 rc5
DGavcdec (for H264 sources)
tsMuxeR from Doom9 forum
DGDecode.dll, Decomb521.dll copy to AVIsynth-plugins folder
h264info

The start is different depending on what kind of file you are starting with. Most of my recordings are mpeg2 and usually film source. So this is how I have done it.

Load the mpeg2 file into the latest version of DGIndex and save project. This will demux the audio and create a .d2v file that you use with MEgui X-264 encoder from Doom9 forum. You need to create a text file with notepad saved with a .avs extention to use AVISynth. Here is a sample--

LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5.7\plugins\DGDecode.dll")

LoadPlugin("C:\Program Files\AviSynth 2.5.7\plugins\Decomb521.dll")

mpeg2source("F:\Yourfile.d2v", upConv=1)

Telecide(1,guide=1,vthresh=0)

Decimate(cycle=5)

FieldDeinterlace(Full=False,threshold=15,dthreshold=9)
ConvertToYV12()

This script will de-interlace and convert the film back to progressive frames. I found that doing this makes the motion much smoother, but about doubles the encode time. I am trying to remove the 3-2 pulldown in other ways, but nothing is as smooth as this script.

Load .avs text file you created into MEgui and if you get no error messages, you should see a frame of the source file you are going to encode. Close video frame and use the bitrate calculator in the tools menu to find the bitrate use the audio file that was created by DGindex and for a double layer DVD disk I use a file size of 7.8 GB. Select the SA-HD-DVD profile and set the fourCC to avc1 in MEgui. Select RAWAVC for the output format, you will get a .264 file. For more info on using MEgui see the Doom9 forum. Two pass file encoding for a 2 hour mpeg2 file takes about 18 hours on my overclocked core2duo computer.

After encoding load the .264 file into h264info and select 3-2 pulldown and run to get a 29.97 version of the encoded file as MF6+ only likes 29.97.

Then load the video file just created along with the audio file created by DGindex, noting the time delay in the file name into tsMuxeR. click on audio file and enter the time delay in the file name into tsMuxeR audio delay window. Then mux into .ts file.
=========================================================

not for the faint of heart.............................and yes,

this is going from mpg->.h264 (so if the source is already .h264 no problems)..

the fps have to be changed, i'm working on it..

details, details..............

adywan,

don't worry about the HD DVD part,

i have that covered..

(i'll post a sample when i'm ready)...

--------------------------------------------------

meanwhile... if you're not familiar....start reading up on video conversion tools,

and threads (lots of info) -> hd dvd to  DL dvd -> http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=705146

--------------------------------------------------

digital conversion stuff.. everybody needs to start getting up to date on this stuff,

i'm pretty sure all the files, etc, should be high definition from here on out, and

you should all become familiar with how to manipulate them, convert them,

merge etc............................i'm surprised at how little has been done with

high definition video, and what little interest there has been so far with

the releases..........................................

------------------------------------------------------

first of all, if you run windows XP, get the UDF 2.5 driver, its free.........................

(also you can find used xbox hd dvd's drive for as little as US$50 ebay/etc............)

install the driver.........................by the way, i used imgburn to burn ady's test...............->

-----------------------------------------------------

now you see these files:

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/6966/testavhcdpw3.jpg

------------------------------------------------------

(alternately you can 'bust' the .iso using isobuster, and just extract that one file, instead of wasting a DVD-r for it)

you only need the .mts under -> stream

copy it over to your hard drive..

----------------------------------------------------

now use tsmuxer to 'break' open those files and see these

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/8461/tsmuxersy3.jpg

extract all files

-----------------------------------------------------------

from here on out, you have a TON of choices,

use SUPER (freeware), and convert to any format, avi (.h264), .mov (.h264), etc...will retain the 24fps,

or if you're adventurous...............convert to MPG2 (23.97fps)................

---------------------------------------------------------

take the resulting files, and use mkvmerge

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/2686/mkvmergeii9.jpg

for the final .mkv file...

-------------------------------------------------------

i will post a link to it shortly................................ 'same' quality, both ac3 5.1, and stereo commentary on track 2...

-------------------------------------------------------

and as a bonus, if you listen to the commentary....you will know what this 'spoiler' picture is referring to.....do you see them, they're tiny!!!!!!!!!!

sorry ady....bluray and the monopoly they have will never be acceptable, and will always be way too expensive.......(yes,

even with the ps3 price drop..sheeshhhhhhhhh)....................

Nope, the DVD-9 of ANH is the best you can - and it seems, will ever be able to - get, which isn't saying anything bad about it since it looks absolutely fantastic.

And I'm damn excited about this 1080p ESB.  Why must all the great projects take so long to finish?

anybody try upscaling via scripts and software anh:r? it might be possible to get a 'decent' version out of it...

esb i'm not that thrilled with, because it was never a favorite for me..

why does anything take long? how many projects do you work on that are quick and easy???

questions questions questions...

the best plan of action is to have 1 master version: 1080p

everything after that is just downconverts.....it makes life a lot easier for those that

want the best quality.....................................i'm sure someone will take the time to

do all the downconversions to other formats, and disc sizes................

its just easier to have 1 master version, and everyone else can pick and choose

which version they will use, and not have to waste time downloading a huge

file they will never need/use..
