Negative1, no offense, but why would you buy a 35mm print of a film, then go to all the trouble and expense of transferring/restoring it, when you think it's merely "average"?

Do you really think The Empire Strikes Back is an average film?

well, to me it was 'average' for the series, it didn't really grip me the like the 1st and episode 3 did...

also, remember , i only saw it one time in the theater, and once more for the SE version, and i've

watched the orignal OT version on laserdisc about 5 times in the last decade or so............so i shouldn't

really be the one to come to COMPLETE opinion of how good/bad it is.....

TRUST me, if i had prepared myself properly, we would be here talking about the 16mm version of STAR WARS,

i'm still kicking myself over that one....................i pray that some day, i find another copy, or a 35mm version of that...

basically, the ESB print is insurance, so that we will/might have a bargaining chip someday that could come in handy

to procure that..................but as it turned out, we practically stole this copy, since the 16mm print went for twice

as much as i paid....

You just needlessly posted the entire credits for Phantom Menace over four posts. You're not humble. You're a dick.

actually, i screwed up....i started out with the phantom menace, but continued with attack of the clones..

yeah, i was trying too hard to prove a point...i deleted them now......

but is it any more egregious than constantly harping on Lucas?

-1,

Honestly, there is not much of this script that I could imagine using on a 35mm transfer of the film. Here is why:

1. Color. You are going to have an RGB signal to work with, which is much easier than Luma and Chroma to adjust.

2. Global motion stabilization: You are going to have the frame edges to work from for this, something that is lost on the DVD, and there will be much more accurate ways of stabilizing WITH the frame edges as a reference.

3. Local motion stabilization: this is an effect of film warp, and how the MPEG encoder handles this. You may very well have some film warp, but you won't have the MPEG effects on the film warp to worry about, so a more gentle local motion stabilization should be used if any is needed at all.

4. Jaggies - you won't have any (hopefully)

5. Sharpening - You shouldn't need this if the capture is decent

6. Subtitles - No need

7. Degrain - Okay, there's the exception to all of this. You are going to want to degrain. Admittedly, there are a lot better algorithms than what I'm using, but my script trys to do too much stuff so I've really had to compromize here. I've tried to get the most bang for the buck on this, but if you want the best degrainer, use TemporalDegrain(). Study that, as my script borrows heavily from it. It's really the best, and since you won't need to do much else, it should run at an acceptable speed.

-G

your right g-force,

i know that............................however, in studying your script,

i've learned a lot of invaluable lessons....................................something i couldn't force myself to do on my own..........

its a great reference tool..

(also, i've got a TON of laserdisc transfers i want to

start messing around with also)..

Maybe that's because if they even tried to say no, Lucas pretty much overruled them.  He had all the money and all the control.  If you want to continue working on Star Wars, and who wouldn't at the time, you did what he said whether you thought it was a good idea or not.  Even McCallum tried to talk Lucas out of Jar Jar and that went nowhere.  He was the Producer.  Anyone else didn't stand a chance, so they all became "Yes Men".  Witness the contrast with the OT, where people had no problem telling Lucas no and that something wasn't going to work and how much better it turned out.

Lucas is a control freak that doesn't take no for an answer anymore.

i must humbly disagree,

i don't care who you work under, if you want to buckle under, fine, ITS STILL YOUR NAME IN THE CREDITS, SOME PEOPLE ARE PROUD OF WHAT THEY WORKED
on in the PT..........................................

besides, if you looked hard, i'm sure you can find some PEOPLE WHO DIDN'T WANT TO WORK ON THE FILMS, what about them?????????

and your opinion about the OT being better? ok, if you think so...........................for me : star wars - excellent , empire strikes back - average, jedi - ok,

and for the prequel trilogy - phantom menace - ok, attack of the clones - average, and revenge of the sith - very very good.........................

so what difference was there, what caused it????????????????????  LUCAS WAS INVOLVED IN ALL OF THEM...

i can't see how you can possibly think 1 person is responsible for everything, its like saying Bill Gates is responsible for everything Microsoft does,

or Steven Jobs is responsible for everything Apple does..........................................no, if you're going to blame people, BLAME ALL OF THEM...

it really doesn't make sense to point a finger at one person..

here's some of the people involved in 'the phantom menace' to start complaining about:

Hey negative1, think you might run this script on your ESB35mm?  At least, the color part.  Because your custom ESB one doesn't look too bad!

its a little early for this..... but one of the reasons i'm studying this script so hard,

is because it might/will come in handy later on..................but it will need to be tweaked...

and also a frame guide will probably have to be produced....we'll see....

GOUT image stabilization - Released
Time

ok, thanks to gforce, i've done a ton of testing, checking options, overlaying things etc..

but first a few preliminaries.........................i love image processing, so a lot of this stuff is very natural to me,

i also have a major in mathematics, with a specialization in analysis...algorithms/etc.....so that's how i tend to

look at things..........................................i'm not so sure about my eyesight, or aesthetics, and i'm just being

thrown into video processing/film techniques etc via the 35mm esb project................anyways.........

1) i really need to go back and REALLY understand what this script is doing , because i think it will

help everyone that doesn't understand the functions to understand some principles behind them,

if they want to improve on them

2)  i have only run a few tests with the gforce script, (since they're very time consuming), so i don't think

my results, or tests will be that conclusive........................that said, i've watched the first 11800 frames of ep4

about 50 times now........so i'm getting a pretty good grip on the scene changes, shots, and different types of

tests with - scrolling text, stable background-moving image, moving image-moving objects , stable background - stable objects,

with a mix of fx shots, and also different camera shots................................................(take that with a grain of salt)

3) i'm going to be posting images, videos, and some math stuff (hopefully won't be too scary)....................back to the idea

of putting a box around the image.........................well it worked, kind of.............but it doesn't help at all, because the image

seems to be stabilized along the x-axis, with the movement being on the inner frame..........(i'll post pictures)..............

so i'm going to go back, and overlay a GRID over the video, to show you a more precise idea of whats going on

4) there's some really psychedelic effects going on when you overlay the gforce version vs gout, but it does show the local effects

of the filters............................................i think the corrections due to color/grain/artifact processing overcomes the image

stabilization bit (which might not be that significant).................................................what i did was blow up the video to 150%

and watch it that way, and if you observe the frame changes that way, you can see how jittery the ENTIRE movie is .....

i hope you don't have to do a crop around it, and adjust all the frames.................but since i'm mapping out the scene changes

by frame..................it might be possible to localize the stability that way, not sure yet.............

ok, i'll start posting pictures, its much easier to discuss that way..

its all just fun and games.....i don't mean to be insulting..although it looks like that....

it's just that when someone tries to apply serious reasoning to a topic, that really doesn't

need it, i get silly...........................and need to let out some steam....

everyone is entitled to their opinions yes..................but don't place the blame entirely on

The amount of money a film makes is no bar to how creative and artistic a film is.

The prequels made shit loads more money than the original versions of the original star wars trilogy and they suck as far as i'm concerned.

More than suck, actually they are a complete unmitigated unforgivable travesty of a classic, so far watered down now for the kiddies. and they added fake cgi for the bubblegum brained morons who like this shit better.

If the amount of money a film makes is the only important factor then films the dumbed down american public goes to see, (aka the average stupid american who watches american idol), are the most sucessful and artful films ever made.

hey, i'm totally on your guys side about box-office being a negligable factor...i only brought it up, since someone *AHEM*COUGH*PSYCHO_DAYV****AHEM**

thought some move *AHEM* was a flop, when in fact it was actually a HIT.....i also brought it up to compare its performance to other pixar movies...

anyways, enough of that.....

about watching a lot of cg movies, yes shrek 1 was decent, and the graphics were average, but the plot saved it.......i thought dinosaurs was

very cool, especially after seeing 'jurassic park'<-good effects, terrible translation from book.......................hey , you can't really know if a movie

is going to be good until you watch it right???????????????? i know a lot of people thought 'cars' was a waste of time, and for kids only, but

to me it was a breakthrough..............................

going back a bit.....i remember a 2d/3d animated movie , called 'iron giant' that didn't do that well, but it is still one of my favorite movies also..

with a great plot, and beautiful animation also...........................i'm sure there are others out there as well..

 -1,

you need to run the .VOB and the .mpg through DGDecode first, and load the resulting .d2v file with Mpeg2Source instead of DirectShowSource.

And you have to make sure they are the same size.

clip1 = Mpeg2Source("X:\...\...\xxx.d2v")

clip2 = Mpeg2Source("X:\...\...\yyy.d2v")

StackVertical (clip1,clip2).ReduceBy2()

The Overlay option won't work very well, because if you get them lined up correctly, it will look like just an average of both.

BTW: the results are indeed supposed to be subtle, and reducing both by 2 just makes the differences less noticable. Watch the original, note how much it jiggles, and then watch the output of the script and see how it jiggles much less, is sharper, better color, better contrast, less jaggies, etc. Please note that the script doesn't "remove" any of these problems, just lessens them without (hopefully) adding artifacts.

-G

thanks g-force, will try it out...

basically, what i wanted to see, is how much the 'jiggle', and other options affect it...

i also wanted to draw a fixed (slightly cropped) box around the original to see how much the variation is ..

thats why i wanted to try the overlay,  so i could 'see' how much is stabilized....etc..............i will play around with it more..

thanks again..

Time

Says you.  It wouldn't be the first time in history that a film didn't do well at the box office but then had great home video sales.

Most of what they listed at that site are simply mistakes, not huge glaring plot holes.  And again, so what?  Does every movie have to be perfect in order to not be bad?  Give me a break.

Wall-E was fun and enjoyable.  I'm sorry that you didn't enjoy it (like you seem to not enjoy most Pixar movies).  Pixar movies make me feel like a kid again.  I'd say they're doing their job just fine.

i will say this:

1) you're right, a movie can do well on dvd and not in the theaters...

2) not every movie has to be perfect, but the imperfections have to be good enough/funny enough/not important enough/endearing to make a lasting impression

(ie. the original 'star wars', a galore of issues, but still classic to me)......................

3) you don't have to be sorry, it was only a movie..... i don't feel bad that PIXAR let me down yet again, because they'll be more movies coming out from them

whether i like them or not.. (their hit/miss ratio is pretty low for me)...

4) you seemed to miss the part, where i said TOY STORY was one of my all time favorite movies (flaws and all), that i have seen it more than STAR WARS,

and that i was really won over by 'the incredibles', and that CARS is slowly creeping up there to be one of my all time favorite animated movies also....

maybe i'm picky/biased/stickler for the movies i like, and don't care for everything someone (yes you PIXAR) throws out there for the public to

devour, and its about time the public realizes it also..maybe they're finally getting a clue..........

being a big computer graphics fan,

i used to wait for every animated movie to come out regardless of what it was (shrek/dinosaurs/chicken little, etc etc etc).......but after

a certain point, i realized almost ANYBODY can put out a computer animated movie..............so i had to have some criteria to separate the wheat

from the chaff............................................wall-e is apparently heading down the road of chaff................i might have been ambivalent before,

but rethinking it, makes me realize how sub-par and displeasing it really was..

Uh, even though I started the discussion about the box office, I don't care about box office numbers one bit.  Actually, the only reason I mentioned it is because you said it was getting negative reviews all over the place and was looking to become a flop.  I've read one bad review about Wall-E and that was from Kurt Loder.  To bad he's a has been.

are you referring to me? name or show me 1 single instance where i said it had 'negative' reviews.....it IS A FLOP , compared to other PIXAR films,

that's my point.......

Anyway, Robots, to me, was boring as hell.

to each their own. i thought it was awesome, and so did others, enough to make an IMAX version, think that will happen to wall-e? doubt it..

As far as Wall-E goes, maybe you didn't catch the reference to HAL in Wall-E.  Yeah, the robot was following orders, but with evidence to the contrary (the plant) he was unwilling to change his mind (there was no possible way for him to get another order from the President since he was dead), just like HAL.  How was EVE's mission a coverup?  She was sent to earth as a probe to look for any sign of life.  She found the plant that Wall-E had already picked up earlier.  That one plant was all that was needed for the return to Earth.  The Captain didn't seem to care about returning to Earth or not until they found the plant.  The plant was the signal that it was time to come home.

i did catch the reference, so what? (and yes i've watched 2001).....................i know what the movie is about, and what the plot points were,

they don't need to be rehashed.............. since HAL knew that no matter if a plant was found or not, it didn't really matter whether eve found

one or not, they weren't going to investigate it anyways.....that's why it was a coverup....

I saw the return to Earth as being a form of redemption for the humans.  Instead of sitting around all day being completely attended too, they'd now develop some sense of accomplishment by being forced to do things on their own.  And with the huge cleanup at hand, they'd have a much greater sense of responsibility to the planet.

Yeah, recycling was a huge, over the top point of the movie, but so what?  You say robots don't have emotion, yet we saw plenty of "emotion" in Star Wars and I don't hear anybody bitching about that.  The whole point of Wall-E was that a robot had developed something after years of doing the same thing every day.  That robot then wanted a companion that he could share his thoughts with.  Hence all the things he did for EVE even after she closed up upon finding the plant.

1) the whole wall-e (adam) and eve thing was boring, any implied emotions, were just an anthromophic behaviour that was read as 'feelings?', no it was just

another lame plot device to keep the story moving...yawn...

2) this has nothing to do with Star Wars , please keep the focus on this movie's universe....

3) the cockroach was pretty much symbolic of the REAL COMPANION for the whole movie, who actually belonged with  trash, and junk, and refuse....and who does wall-e  have as a friend?,   yeah, a cute'n'cuddly cockroach...............i'm sure they'll be plush versions for the kids (gag).....

It's worth noting that Robots had pretty significant drops at the box office every week after it's first week too.  And that was with a horror movie and then a comedy being released the first two weeks after it came out.  It managed to pay for itself in 3 weeks instead of Wall-E's 4, but let's wait and see how Wall-E does in the home video market (everything got clobbered this weekend by Batman).  Wall-E managed a fairly respectable $10 million weekend, considering that Batman, Hellboy II, and Space Chimps were all out (Space Chimps did worse than Wall-E and this is its opening weekend).

so Robots had a drop, but 48%? and as i keep saying, compared to other PIXAR films, which is the scope of this reference, this is extremely bad considering

the rest of the movie field......................THERE is NO WAY that dvd/home sales will make up for the rest of the revenue....

and for more fun, heres a list of just some of mistakes/errors and plot holes in wall-e

Wall-e has disappointed all pixar fans, and is performing as one of the WORST releases they ever have.....

gee, do you think they'll make a sequel for it too?

how do you like this happy quote for the weekend.

Sixth spot goes to Pixar's WALL-E, as the computer animated kids flick got competition from not only Batman, but also Space Chimps this weekend. WALL-E earned $9.8 million and falls 48% compared to last weekend. WALL-E has seen some of the biggest drops in Pixar history, and has a current total so far of $182.5 million.

BOX OFFICE ALWAYS INCLUDES VHS AND DVD SALES AFTER THE FILM HAS BEEN RELEASED ON THOSE FORMATS.  I MANAGED A VIDEO STORE FOR THREE YEARS.  I KNOW HOW THE NUMBERS WORK.  THE FACT THAT WALL*E IS STILL MAKING MONEY AT THE BOX OFFICE IS A REALLY GOOD SIGN FOR THE FILM.

working at a video store , while fun, does not make you an expert in anything, and you still won't admit

that ROBOTS was a huge HIT compared to the flop that is CRAP-E, i mean WALL-E is,

-------------------------

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/about/boxoffice.htm

----------------

Box Office Mojo publishes several sections reporting box office receipts by time period, including Daily, Weekend, Weekly, Monthly, Quarterly, Seasonal, Yearly and All Time.

KEY TERMINOLOGY
Box office tracking refers to theatrical box office earnings. Additional sources of revenue, such as home entertainment sales and rentals, television rights, product placement fees, etc. are not included. All grosses published reflect domestic earnings, i.e., United States and Canada, unless otherwise noted.

=================================

DO YOU GET IT NOW !   Home entertainment sales and rentals are not included in the "BOX OFFICE" numbers. period. Don't even try to deny it.

by the way, i don't know if I included IMAX figures also, as seeing ROBOTS in IMAX blows away anything WALL-E could ever do..

(and if you want back up confirmation , look here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0358082/business

so anyway, are now admitting that even though wall-e hasn't even made back its money,

the fact its still in the theaters is a good thing????  what is that supposed to mean,

all the other PIXAR movies made way more, and were doing much better...

please stop trying to make this movie into a 'hit', so you can justify liking it...

i don't care if you do or not.............but don't make it seem like its doing better than it is..

just admit it..

For those of you who are Blade Runner Fans, I would like to stir up more discussion about the Blade Runner '07 DVDs. Perhaps I should make a thread on it in the Off Topic forum, I'm sure there are probably already some there.

i'm not a huge fan of bladerunner...that boxset was full of unnecessary bloat, and pretty much not needed..............

ridley scott pulled a 'george lucas' and added extra unintentional scenes..

...here's the thread.

I hope your kids get a better education in school, than this movie...

for your information : box office wise, for 'robots',

The film was released March 11, 2005 in the United States and Canada and grossed $36 million in 3,776 theaters its opening weekend, ranking #1 at the box office.

It grossed a total of $260.7 million worldwide — $128.2 million in the United States and Canada and $132.5 million in other territories.

for wall-e,

Walt Disney Pictures released it in the United States and Canada on June 27, 2008. The film grossed $23.1 million on its opening day, and $63 million during its opening weekend in 3,992 theaters

made more in its opening weekend, but is one of the POOREST performing movies for pixar....yeah, let's wait and see, and

yeah it will make back its budget ($180 million), but how much more????????????????????????????????????

FIRST OFF THOSE NUMBERS INCLUDE THE DVD AND VHS SALES.  $128.2 MILLION U.S. FELL SHORT OF WHAT THEY WANTED.  IT'S OKAY, BUT IT STILL COUNTS AS A FLOP.  WAS THERE A SEQUEL?  NO, AND THAT MEANS THAT IT DIDN'T MEET STUDIO EXPECTATIONS.

    excuse me,

do you need further proof? http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=robots.htm please learn how to do 'research'..........................

THOSE ARE BOX OFFICE NUMBERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they DO NOT INCLUDE VHS or DVD sales, or they would be even higher..

and furthermore, if you bother to click on the link... notice this part ?  Production Budget: $75 million

yeah, that's right, it made back way more than its budget...

i don't know which universe you live in, that's a huge HIT.......................................

'robots' is the move that Wall-E wishes it could have been............................

pixar LOSES, do you get it now?

Wall-e has disappointed all pixar fans, and is performing as one of the WORST releases they ever have.....

gee, do you think they'll make a sequel for it too?

how do you like this happy quote for the weekend.

Sixth spot goes to Pixar's WALL-E, as the computer animated kids flick got competition from not only Batman, but also Space Chimps this weekend. WALL-E earned $9.8 million and falls 48% compared to last weekend. WALL-E has seen some of the biggest drops in Pixar history, and has a current total so far of $182.5 million.

LOOKS LIKE 'WALL-E' is the movie that is going to be the HUGE FLOP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
