Info Wanted: CED Discs
Time

got the player today...

way cool..

my star wars is the cbs / fox, and my return of the jedi is the blue caddies..

i love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! , the color drops out every once in a while, there a max-headroom

like stutters.. which might be caused by the following...

Why do some of my CED's skip, and what can I do to correct this?

Most of the skipping on CED's is caused by a condition RCA called "video virus," rather than by actual damage to the disc grooves. If the skipping goes away or becomes less pronounced when the same section is played repeatedly, then the skipping is attributable to video virus. This condition occurs when tiny dust particles on the disc surface have become "glued" to the surface by the right combination of high temperature and high humidity. Usually the stylus will break this dust free the first time it hits the dust, but sometimes the contaminated grooves will have to played a number of times to break the dust free.

Some discs will skip throughout play the first time they are played, but then not skip at all on subsequent plays. This is because the disc has not been played in a long time and required a conditioning play wherein the stylus "cuts" a groove in the glassy smooth lubricant on the disc surface.

-----------------------------------

the sound is crystal clear, and doesn't distort at all..

at when the picture is stable, the colors are clear and vivid..

yeah, its a cross between vhs quality-and subpar laserdisc...

but it's just so COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i love that you have to 'load' the disc, and flip it over after an hour,

and there are skips, and scratches just like a record player..

i'll probably get some more sets of discs just to get them, the covers with

caddies are neat also..

anybody convert these yet? i'll try to capture them, and see what happens,

with the non-cleaned up versions, and a 'fixed' one...

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: Unholy Edition (Released)
Time

thank you mthaslett for the civil debate...

although i will just say that, much like the EU did for star wars

(people either like it or hate it), i read every indiana jones story

that was released, and some of them were pretty good..

not to mention the videogames (fate of atlantis), and all the

young indiana jones tv episodes also (which i thought were

very good also).................

there is a wealth of adventures/stories that indiana has explored

outside of the 'old testament' universe........... i just wished they

had used them instead..

Not a big James Bond fan, I take it.

not really, although there's a few sean connery ones [he WAS james bond] that i liked,

at least they had different enemies..

You left out that they were both shot on film and released by Paramount. By your list, the only way a sequel wouldn't be too much like ROTLA is if Indiana didn't go after artifiacts and fights badguys who try to take them from him and meet beautiful girls in exotic locations. You actually thought Indy fighting fez wearing grail protectors on speedboats was a rehash of Indy fighting the Nazi hired thugs in Marion's bar?

no, you're still missing my point, they DONT have to be exactly the same,

its just the timing, and sequence of events..

yeah, think about why TOD was better, even though it sucked overall:

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

intro : completely wild fight scene in a club, and an awesome start

girl : meets the beautiful girl early on

location : ends up in a trap (plane), that takes him to india, that he has to escape

from..

plot : yeah, ok its more religious artifacts....lame....couldn't it be something else?

crazy bug/animal scene : the feast at the indian place .... lame....totally overdone..

and then the added scene with the bugs in the tunnel.....

bad guys : indian thugs ... very original .... at least they're not ...shhh..nazis..

wild chase scene : done on underground rail cars .... some points for originality ...

fight scene / dramatic moment : cutting the bridge in half ... amazing......

climactic fight with bad guy : yeah its there... but at least is not ....shhh. ...nazis

resolution : they actually return the stuff they were looking for

SEE, WAS IT THAT HARD TO CHANGE ALL THE ELEMENTS?

too bad though, because in itself the changes were ok, but put together,

they became a very tiring / boring / poorly orchestrated sequence of events...

The fact is ROTLA is the story of a skeptic learning to face real magic while TLC is the story of a man healing his long hurtful rift with his father. Yeah, they both have nazis, fights, artifacts and pretty girls, but so does Schindler's List. For TLC to have so many Indy trademarks worked into a completely different story is an accomplishment, not a cop-out. Sorry you don't see it that way.

didn't matter too me....

it's all about spiritual stuff (and i'm semi-religious christian).....so what difference did

it make? or how he got there, or if the lame dialogue with his father (which totally wasted

sean connery being in the film).......

you casually throw aside valid plot points, similarities, and structure, just because of

1 or 2 differences? and what about schindlers list? when did oscar go looking for

an artifact? what beautiful girl are you talking about? where was the big dramatic

fight scene ? what are you talking about?

is that the best comparison you could come up with?

don't you think alan quartermain and the city of gold, or the first one, were

actually better at cloning 'indiana jones', than the actual sequels themselves?

dont you think there were plenty of other parodies, and attempts that tried

to establish themselves : ie : romancing the stone, jewel of the nile...

give me a break, lucas and spielberg realized how big a turkey they had

with the second one, and desperately tried to return to the formula that

they had the first time, and failed miserably with the third, which pretty

much killed off the series..... luckily they were able to resurrect it with

something much more original the 4th time around..

what i meant i the themes were too similar to my tastes...

ROTLA - introduces belloq(sp?) and history with indy

TLC - introduces some other guy that has a history with indy

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA- indiana has a talk about finding the ark of the covenant

TLC - indiana has a talk about finding the holy grail

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA -indiana jones travels to exotic location to find out more info,

           runs into a beautiful girl

TLC - indiana jones travels to exotic location to find out more info,

           runs into a beautiful girl

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA - indiana has a fight scene shooting up the bad guys in a bar

TLC - indiana has a fight scene shooting up bad guys on a boat

(and for an added bonus, fighting with the possibility of getting

chopped up by a propeller)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA - indiana does intricate problem solving to find artifact in the desert

TLC - indiana does intricate problem solving to find artifact in desert

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA - indiana finds the artifact and it gets taken away by the nazis

TLC - indiana finds the information about where to get artifact, but the

nazis want to take it away

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA - cue several chase scenes with indiana being pursed by nazis

TLC - cue several chase scenes with indiana being pursued by nazis

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA - indiana has a dramatic fight with a nazi, that goes back and forth,

with indiana of course ultimately winning in a dramatic way (plane)

TLC - indiana has a dramatic fight with a nazi, that goes back and forth,

with indiana of course ultimately winning in a dramatic way (tank)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA - the nazi bad guys act stupid with the artifact, and dies a gruesome death

TLC - the bad guy acts stupid near the artifact, and dies a gruesome death

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ROTLA - the artifact is put away where no one will ever find it

TLC - the artifact is lost in a place where no one will ever find it

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

yeah, it actually follows all the major plot points, timing, and events

that closely..

as much as TOD sucked, this sucked just as bad,

because THERE WAS NO ORIGINAL THOUGHT PUT INTO THE MOVIE..

thats why i liked INDY 4 so much....(although, come to think of it,

it was pretty derivative too , subtitute nazi = russian, etc)..

Thank you ever so much for being so specific. More often than not people can be ignored or shrugged off for such info. I thank you.

That fanedit site has just made my eyes open somewhat. Downloading the avi right now from rapidshare, however I posted in this thread as seeing it in HD would be amazing.

Of course, I'll just be happy to see it.

GF just looked at me with baited breath as I ran downstairs to tell her I found it.

you're welcome, you might want to look around more, and read some of the threads,

or at least the first/last pages of the longer ones before posting...it will save you time..

as you might have guessed, there probably WONT be a HD version of ANH:R, but instead

a color corrected version of the SE with some modifications....

I was thinking the same thing. Nice to see someone getting some help like that. *thumbs up*

despite my nickname...

i've found practically everyone here on this board to be incredibly helpful,

(except for one difficult technical question about vc1 codec, that i can't find an

answer too)....

every request for a versions, every detail, and all the other requests i have

had too.. this is an extremely friendly board..

however, opinions get very heated at times..

Is laserdisc better than VHS?

Mielr said:

Laserdisc was also the first format to present a film in its correct widescreen aspect ratio, I believe. Wasn't the first widescreen LD the Criterion Bladerunner?

i don't think so, i was checking the CEDmagic site, and there were CED discs in widescreen format,

even though LD's came out first, i don't think the commercial releases were first..

also what about VHS? i've never owned a videotape or VCR.... surely something must

have come out in letterboxed format for it???

I'm thinking about buying a laserdisc player and OOT laserdiscs. Do you know a good website to find them?

i got mine from ebay dirt cheap.. $50 overall (unit+shipping) denon LD player,

in near perfect condition, and all the LD's are cheap (except the japanese special edition

set).... you can find the orignal OOT from fox, widescreen and full screen, then the

re-released widescreen OT versions, and then the THX faces set, and also the definitive

CAV box set for very cheap prices... CLV discs put more video on the disc, so you don't

have as many, and don't have to flip them over.. CAV discs have more video data per

side...so you have more discs, but better quality, and you step FRAME by FRAME through

them to... look into all the options...

Interesting new video technology - Exciting possibilities for upscaling resolution
Time

actually, none of this technology is new..

i've posted the link, looked at the paper and the code, and mentioned this link in at

least 2 other places on this board before....

while what they've done is cool, its not new.....it was just harder to do before,

and they are introducing the element of upscaling, etc... all the compositing stuff

can be done before...they're just using different methods to do it..

go back to their site, and check out the other stuff they're doing..

this is almost useless, since its done on static objects, in the video..

they have other stuff that is cooler, look at the extraction of a 3d moving object

from video...now that's neat....

anyways, all this stuff is years away from ever being implemented (unless you

do it yourself), so i wouldn't hold your breath..

yeah i was impressed at first....... but small steps have to be made, before

any real progress will be made...

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: Unholy Edition (Released)
Time

i thought this was an ok edit..

i've never liked 'the last crusade' , (it was almost as bad as 'the temple of doom')..

it's just way too derivative of the first movie, and almost follows the outline to the T,

along with Nazis, looking for a religious artifact, the fights, jokes, etc.....

i was hoping this might change some aspects of the movie to improve it..

however, i did not find it to be the case... it almost made it worse in a way,

the missing intro scene was fun to me, but its gone, now we're dropped into

a random fight scene for no reason...the rest of movie progresses pretty much

the same way the original did, with no real improvements either,.... yeah some

of the pacing is different, lines are altered here and there.....

but overall, i didn't get the feeling that movie was altered enough in a meaningful

way, to change its major flaws (being a subpar clone of the first movie)..

not recommended for everyone...

nice job on the editting ... you might want to wipe out 'river phoenix' from the

credits, since he's actually not in it...

I discovered information about this edit through reading the Digital Bits a couple of days ago and have become massively intrigued by this whole venture. I am not only amazed by the time/effort/skill that has gone into this but also the about of errors which have now become apparent in the film. How could I not have ever noticed the ILM guy by the droids being sold to Lars Owen?!

Asides from Torrents I am having difficulty obtaining the knowledge of how to view this edit. Is pming considered a faux pas? Leads would be appreciated as I am giddy with excitement!!!

tcib,

i think you're in the wrong thread, this is for the HD versions of the trilogy.

if you're looking for the 'A new hope : revisited' , go over here:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/STAR-WARS-EP-IV-2004-REVISITED-ADYWAN-DVD-9-VERSIONS-NOW-AVAILABLE/topic/5942/

also, you can download it from several bittorent sites:

demonoid, mininova, the pirate bay.

if you have a rapidshare account, you can get it from:

http://www.fanedit.org -> do a search for star wars

also if you have good/fast newsgroup access, get it from:

STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 REVISITED ADYWAN *1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION
Time
Bobocop said:

my point is, if you're going to show off something in High Definition on a TV made

for that purpose, it's better to show them something from a High Definition source,

and compare it to regular TV....

Adywan said he has no plans to redo ANHR in HD at this time after all the trouble it took to get the current version out there. There will be the colour corrected HD version of the SE of course, but HD or not, it's more fun to show off the Revisited version.

I think teharri's point was that he was trying to spread awareness about 'Revisited.' It didn't sound like he was specifically trying to use it to sell HDTV's.

i think we both are trying to address 2 different issues:

1) i was not implying that terrahi was trying to sell tvs using this release,

i was trying to point out that it is better to use something that is HighDef for HDTV's...

regardless of whether it sells them or not.......(even though he is a salesman)

2) i never implied there was, or ever will be a HD version of ANHR........but it is my opinion,

the HD corrected version that is coming out from Adywan shortly is more impressive to

me.................... since i've just gotten into HD recently (with a widescreen TV), so even

though ANH:R is fun, (i would have enjoyed the purist version more in HD )......

it doesn't captivate me as much as the upcoming HD release will..

but to each their own...
