Crystal Clear? Not a chance in hell for a "crystal clear" version of any movie with 8.5 gb.
hmm, my eyesight must be pretty bad, because i've been going crazy downloading
every HD sci fi film i can get my hands on....and they all blow away the DVD versions
that are out there, alien, terminator, back to the future, you name it..... all in thrilling
glorious 720p, and 1080p.....
maybe the rips you've seen aren't that good.. but the ones ENCODED properly with
.h264 and vc-1 look very sharp to me.... even the 9 gig versions of the wookiegroomer
star wars episodes, are much better than all the dvd versions i've watched..

Yeah... That's the impression I got from reading it. ^_~
much like i never trust WIKIPEDIA entirely, and just use it a starting point..
the same with WOOKIPEDIA,
you wanted examples,
i gave you examples...
i guess you have nothing to say about the other 90% of the message, or is it to easy
to pick on one small point?
you started this thread off with a false accusation about how 'everyone hates the midichlorian',
and went downwards from there.... if someone is refuting it, or showing otherwise, why
don't you comment on that instead?

don't you all think its fair to say,
that you can (and do) interpret the 'force' to be whatever you
want it be anyways? (despite what Lucas, the EU, or other definitions
for it exist)....
if its simple for you, fine keep it simple....and don't mess with the midichlorians..
if you want something a little deeper, absorb the scientific aspects into the force...
if want it really complicated, then the EU fleshes that out...
why does any one version of it have to be 'wrong'?
and i guess the point of this thread is, why do you (some people) keep insisting
it was wrong for Lucas to embellish, add, and explain something he felt like
he wanted to explain anyways?
there are several types of canon, if you want to go that route,
and which ones you believe, and acknowledge are totally up to you..
but don't go around telling the rest of us, that enjoy those sorts
of things, that we're wrong, and it's a dumb idea, and why was
it brought up in the first place?
unless anyone of you is a time-traveller, stop acting like these
events didn't happen, and try to wish them away, or retcon them..

It was a seminal moment in film history where everything came together in the end in complete narrative and aesthetic synergy. There are only a handful of films that can boast such perfection (e.g. Lawrence of Arabia) At the end of the day, were there a proper anamorphic DVD transfer of this original 1980 version, there would be no need for Adywan to even work on this film. As it is however, sadly, there is no proper DVD and hence Adywan must take a not-so-special edition and make it special so we can have something that is presentable on a modern home theater.
i'm sorry, but ESB was a let down for me when i saw it, i wanted to know what happened right after star wars, and it jumped ahead without filling in all the gaps... i also felt let down that it was the middle third part [i wasn't too fanatical to read that there was a plan for the third film], and didn't feel conclusive at all.... what if 'jedi' had never been made? then what? there were narrative leaps, and plot subpoints that didn't click for me ...
The lack of a satisfying conclusion was exactly what I loved most about ESB- it was daring, edgy and unconventional and was very "UN-Hollywood".
I never doubted there would be a third film. I didn't see it until the re-release in 1982, so by then we knew they were already filming Jedi, but even in 1980, the huge success of ESB made 'part 3' a given.
all of you must have been more movie-savvy, and knowledgable than myself as young
teenager... i never saw a trailer for star wars, i saw 1 preview for ESB, with the re-release
of 'star wars'... (this was in Canada, way back in the early 80's)....... i didn't pay attention
to box-office figures, i didn't read star wars magazines, watch news reports, or reflect on
future box-office predictions...
i bought the collectors cards, i had the bedsheets, and a couple of action figures...
heck, by the time Empire Strikes Back came out, i was visitting London, England,
and saw it in 70mm at the Odeon there...... i knew the movie was out, only because i
looked in the newspaper and saw an ad for it..... yeah, of course at the end, i was
wondering what happened ? and was this it? i hadn't seen to many sequels, and
i can't even remember if there were movies with a 'third part'..
i think i saw a 'time' magazine article about 'return of the jedi', and once again,
having never seen a trailer...went to see 'jedi' in the theater.... i actually felt
better that it was much better at filling in the gaps, and having a storyline
that seemed more linear...and of course the ending rocked....

maybe we should just take this offline, or you should actually read all the pages in 35mm ESB thread.
but since you decided to publicly chastise me here, i'll answer you..
i AM a fan of STAR WARS....period... the original trilogy,
i don't like all the movies equally, i DONT HATE ESB... its just not
as good as Star Wars..
as a 'casual' fan, why shouldn't i bother investing money in it FOR THE GOOD
OF EVERYONE HERE.... don't you think ADYWAN and everyone else who wants
will be getting it?
if this movie is so great, why DON'T YOU OWN IT? am i the first person to come onto
this board, that actually was bothered enough to get it? and by the way, i'm desperately
trying to get the other reels of 'Star Wars' too... which are much more important to me,
and i THINK TO ANYONE ELSE THAT HAS BEEN TO THIS BOARD...............
where do you come off, on being the all-knowing, all-speaking voice for supposedly
everyone here?
don't you think i have better things to do with my money and my time?
the only reason i'm sharing this stuff on this board, is because i'm tired of
waiting around for anyone to do anything about it..
if its that easy for a 'casual' fan such as myself to get this, what is everyone
else doing (and yes, i'm totally aware of all the restoration projects, and other
things going on, and am totally appreciate of what there is going on)..
if everyone would quit griping about there is NO HD, anamorphic versions of the
movies they liked, why don't they actually do something about it? i've been coming
to these boards for years, and i KNOW that there have been plenty of copies in
16mm, and 35mm of the trilogy on ebay several times (a 16mm version of empire
sold for twice what i paid for the 35mm version)..........
are you telling me that nobody has bothered to acquire a version that they are
willing to share with the community up until now??????? i find it hard to believe,
but you seem to be telling me that is the case..
back to my personal opinions, that's all they are... you have yours , and i have mine..
what difference does it make if i don't feel as strongly as you do about ESB?
i'm interested in the technical and preservation aspects of restoring the movie,
as a challenge.... why can't i be involved from that perspective?
by the way, the 35mm ESB is the first piece of film i have ever owned, since then,
all i've gotten is several trailers from star wars, and 8mm/16mm versions, along
with a 16mm trailer for indiana jones, and finally the 35mm reel 6 of 'star wars'..
(which contains the death star battle, which to me, is an experience UNMATCHED
by ANY OTHER FILM I'VE EVER SEEN)...
there, does that make me a hypocrite? or does that mean my standards are lower?
or not good enough for you?
do you want me to hand deliver the HD version to your doorstep, when its done
being restored, so that you will finally stop complaining about Lucasfilm, and it
not being handled properly??

well, i wouldn't want to point out stuff that you haven't read and spoil it.
out of those books, only 'splinter of a minds eye'
had some interesting points:
--------------------------------------------
splinter of a minds eye - a crystal that can enhance the power of the force?
and how does this fit in with anything about the force from the movies?
-------------------------------------------
Proportionally according to size and density, the Force's power was magnified a thousandfold;while a
single shard would give off a minor jolt, the entire crystal gave off such a feeling of power and
clarity of the Force that the possessor's entire being would course with the energy. The full crystal
was also able to channel the Force into a method of healing; Luke Skywalker used this inherent power,
along with his limited connection to the Force, to bring both himself and Leia Organa from death.
However, when Darth Vader was in close proximity to the presence of the Kaiburr, the residual effects
of the Force caused the Dark Lord's affinity with the dark side of the Force to expand greater. As a
result, Vader found himself losing what self-control he possessed, fighting his own son
and—unbeknownst to him or Skywalker—his daughter against his will, as he had intended to capture them
alive. Furthermore, the crystal granted Vader the ability to cast Force lightning, normally
impossible due to Vader's bionic limbs and life-support systems.
for more info : http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Kaiburr_crystal
-------------------------------------------
you're going to have to read a lot more books, and stories
if you want more details...there's just way too many to go into..
which is probably why i gave up years ago..
anyways.. information about the force in general (collectively):
------------------------------
Within the Star Wars expanded universe, a number of other powers have been demonstrated, those
include the ability to heal or drain the life-force of others, increase resistance to attack,
dissipate energy attacks and warp space.

Ashla was the name given to the light side of the Force in early drafts of Star Wars and was
established as canon in the Expanded Universe by the Power of the Jedi Sourcebook. It was also said
to be what the ancient Jedi and Sith called the light side in Darth Bane: Rule of Two.
The Power of the Jedi Sourcebook states that the Potentium (the view that the Force is one, and its
sides are just a matter of choice of Force powers) is a corrupt, misguided philosophy, thus being the
first source to establish from the official perspective that the Jedi Orthodox philosophy reflects
the true nature of the Force.
(for more info go here : http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Light_side
when it comes to the dark side, there's interesting stuff there also..
for example : machines that use the dark side..
-------------------------------------------------------------
At any rate, they lost their abilities to use the Force as well as their Force-powered machines, such
as the Star Forge. The Star Forge was a superweapon and manufacturing facility capable of creating
nearly anything by drawing on both the power of a star and the dark side of the Force. During the
Jedi Civil War, Revan and Malak recovered the Star Forge and used it to create a massive fleet for
their Sith Empire. Later reverse-engineering of Infinite Empire technology imbued with the dark side
created the basis of other technologies such as the hyperdrive
animals that have the dark side in them
---------------------------------------------------
The effects of the Sith Empires could be seen upon and within the planets Korriban and Ziost, which
were filled with energies from the dark side of the Force. Animals such as the terentateks, distorted
from the powerful presence of the dark side, roamed the caverns and caves feeding on the
Force-sensitives that came across them. There was also the Valley of the Dark Lords, a graveyard that
reverberated with dark side energy and was full of caverns and tombs, which once possessed powerful
Sith artifacts. There the Sith even appeared as apparitions on occasion; Ajunta Pall inhabited his
tomb as a ghost until he was set to rest by the relocation of a sword imbued with the dark side of
the Force.

and good version in SW..... i wanted to be a jedi, because of SW, not go through
some training in a swamp like in ESB.... i wanted to fly a spaceship because of SW

in ESB....
Star Wars changed my life..... Empire Strikes Back did not...

i'll be posting some more screen caps of more great scenes from the movie shortly..
but crygor64 is missing the point about people that watched the PT, and
still went to see the clone wars in the theater anyways, and still complain..
people will always find something to complain about,
thats why we're here,
that's why this board is here..
heck, thats why half the internet is here..
if we never had problems with Lucas, the films, or anything else,
no one would be here posting anything...
and thats why it still surprises me at times (not anymore), about why
dont people just ignore Star Wars SE, the PT, the clone wars, and everything else that
comes out..... and just leave the rest of the people (not only tfn, or starwars.com people),
who actually do enjoy them, to have them to watch, and enjoy.. [or maybe i just answered
my own question ... see above, about people who's only point is to complain]..
you know the LUCAS stopped catering to the 'real' fans a long time ago in a galaxy
far, far away...... so why do you have 'a new hope' that he will actully put something
out again that you will enjoy??????????
if you don't 'move along' with what he's doing, then you're doomed to keep being
disappointed, and keep complaining -> endless loop

i thought it was pretty cool from a cgi perspective what could be
done with a cg character.....(not a whole heck of a lot)... but still
coming from a computer graphics background, i found the whole
character fascinating to watch, but not so much to listen to.
and no, i don't think the midicholorian subplot ruined what the force was
for me either, i guess most people just ignore most of the EU, and other
stuff, because i kept reading them for the longest time, and there were
a lot of other crazy ideas in those books also, so why would one more
make any difference? (just to stay on topic)..

yes, i liked seeing obi-wan again, yes yoda was cool....and the further depth into talk about the force was intriguing...and of course the familial revelation furthered the story into areas we could not have imagined..
perfection? i don't think so, far from it....there were plenty of other films that in my opinion could outdo this film...... ok, let's look at your viewpoint, let's say there is a 'good' print of this version on DVD (and by the way, the HD versions of the SE look awesome to me on 'modern day home theater', so i'm not worried about that aspect of it)..... adywan would STILL be working on it....and why not, it hasn't stopped anyone from using laserdisc rips or subsequent DVD rips of OOT as a starting point, so i'm not sure what you even mean there.... fan-edits will exist no matter what exists..
Whether you like the prequels or not, I believe it is very shortsighted to declare that simply because something is 28 years old means it must be updated and changed. At its very essence, Empire Strikes Back is THE ONE AND ONLY Star Wars film that did work seamlessly right out of the gate. The film was the product of a courageous script, brilliantly directed and produced with groundbreaking effort and convention-breaking choices.
NO IT IS NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT WORKS...only the FIRST ONE WORKS seamlessly.. this film had a decent script, average direction, and there wasn't one thing that i can look back at today, and go, wow that was impressive... not the battles, star wars outdid it, not the light saber battle, it had been done before... not the revelation of force powers, once again star wars preceded it.... what exactly did you think worked so 'seamlessly'???
i didn't mind the SE changes,and i still don't mind them..
i'm curious..
Star Wars, while a narrative success certainly, suffered from the compromised budget that left many of its optical effects lagging far short of intentions (which Ady has now admirably corrected). Return of the Jedi was always only one-third the movie it was originally intended to be, and the special edition only complicated the matter.
Star Wars suffered from NOTHING ... it WAS PERFECTION, and it STILL IS.. i don't mind adywans corrections, but that's all they are, just a fanedit, they are not conclusive, or definitive... they're not from Lucas.. the original is the ONLY version that exists to me (ie: star wars, and ok, ep IV crawl)..as the definitive reference...
Phantom Menace was a racehorse that tripped out of the gate and limped around the track. Attack of the Clones was, aside from 10 minutes in the middle, an insipid intelligence-insulting love farce. Revenge of the Sith was, in many ways, the most troubled and negligent film of them all - the one without any excuses and yet even after almost six hours of time in previous films to tell the story of Anakin Skywalker, the creators waited until the last 20 minutes of Sith to finally get around to the essential story in a series of truncated scenes tacked on to the end in wipes while blatantly ignoring major sections of established continuity and throwing those to the wind.
phantom menace was average, attack of the clones was decent, and revenge of the sith
was excellent to me, right up there with empire, and in my eyes will surpass it......
The Empire Strikes Back is the only film without either fatal narrative flaws or compromising technical errors. It is "Star Wars" fully realized and the way it was originally intended, no matter what revisionist history you believe. So, if spaceship interiors a movie make, then have at it. For me, there's nothing wrong with the ship interiors, they look amazing - and probably because like every other single element of Empire Strikes Back, they all service the story and not the other way around.
no, Empire was very good, but it too had flaws that you aren't willing to acknowlege, or even admit otherwise, you wouldn't be here commenting in a thread about it, if you are so against any changes, why would you care that someone is making them? obviously you didn't care for the SE changes either..
Ady, my apologies for waxing poetic about this in your thread. Feel free to delete at your leisure if this offends you.
i thought this board was about open discussions, different viewpoints, and alternate ideas..
i'd be very disappointed if any opposing thought or opinions were deleted..

Whatever he does will be a major addition to the site and our collections, whatever resolution it is. :) It would be kinda neat to know how much faster something like a color correction pass can be done with quad core versus dual core.
a few months ago, i bought a 2.8Gig core 2 duo, for something like US$600....
and now there are more powerfull QUAD core machines for less than that, with
more memory, etc..... of course, i knew that.... but i didn't not expect prices to
fall that quickly..
i only use intel, but i know that AMD is desperately trying to compete (not that well),
but maybe its helping bring down the price, i also a triple-core from AMD that was
cheap, but i wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole (its a quad core, with 1 processor
that didn't pass testing)...........................
i know that intel has new processors in Larrabee, and the i7core chips coming out
later, but i've never liked being on the bleeding edge.... supposedly AMD+ATI is
coming out with some GPU chips to compete also, and although NVIDIA will never
be allowed to, they talk about making general purpose GPU chips also.......
i think once we get the octo-core machines (some are out there now), and the
n-core machines, where you can mix and match the processors to your needs,
along with multi-core GPU's for the graphics, ,we'll be set for a few more years...
i'm more interested in the general purpose GPU chips, since i don't game that
much (i have an xbox360 for that)..... so the advances in video card chips don't
interest me as much, although there is talk about being able to use the memory
on those boards, along with those GPU's for other tasks..
