'Star Wars: Phantom Menace' Crosses $1 Billion Mark at Box Office

Don't hate the messenger.

I just cant wait for the good ones to come out. Will Star Wars retake its rightful spot at the top of the all time box office?

Considering worldwide it would have to make $2 billion, I would guess no.

If you're talking about domestic, it would have to make $300 million.

Although, adjusted for inflation, it would only have to make $200 million. That's still a lot. Given, when Star Wars SE was released, it made $235 million adjusted, but I just don't see that happening again.

My guess is it'll make somewhere upwards of $100 million. How much exactly will probably depend on inflation in 2015.

hmm.. so TPM did overtake "the sting" to become #16

on the adjusted for inflation list:

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

not bad at all.. #15 is return of the jedi, good company

to have. (#14 is avatar).

Star Wars Colortiming & Cinematography (was What changes was done to STAR WARS in '93?)

-1, I think you have a colorspace conversion error in those samples.

Black level is at 16 should be 0

White level is at 235 should be 255

Sometimes it gets this way depending on the program used to create the jpgs.

yeah, this is a simple export from avidemux,

i didn't mess around with the colors or options originally.

one quick try of changing the black levels blew out the whites.

feel free to correct, and post results.

OBITUARY - Star Wars Fullscreen/Pan and Scan versions. R.I.P.

Ok I was wrong about Betamax being used for TV broadcasting

But I still think it was better than VHS.

As for Laser Disk I have never used one.

But I thought the early LD’s of the Star Wars movies

Had time compression? Or was that just on that weird other Disk that played video with a needle like a record player

some of the early LD, and CEDs did, the later one's didn't:

For ced's:

for some of the pan and scan ld's

there's a ton more links.. just do a search for laserdisc.

Harmy said:

Yeah, that's the thing, it's from a seriously pink-faded print and when a print has as much fading as this ESB print, you basically have to re-time it in order to fix it, so you can hardly take it as a reference. I can sort of trust the SW print, since it's low fade, though apparently it's timed much colder than a normal projection print and it would be hard to determine how much colder exactly, so it's not the greatest reference either. So you'd actually need a reference to colour time both of those prints.

agreed

Yes, thanks for posting those Cloud City interior shots. :) Interesting, seems a little bit washed out and pink, the SWE is perhaps a little too orange though. Is the color correction on those final and is it possible to post not color corrected ones of those frames? I'm curious to see just how pink faded it is. Thanks.

sure no problem,

those are just the first pass.

here's the original ones:

we've been too distracted by something else

to get back to them! when we do i'll post a

lot more.

A sequence in Empire which doesn't look quite the same since the '93 THX transfer is the interiors of Cloud City when Han & company arrives, where the color pallette originally was warm with lots of orange. The bootleg source of Fritz is pretty rough and can often not be used for color reference but the colors in this particular part of the film is suprisingly stable and gives you an general idea of how it looked.

The -83 rental tape! that is an old one:) Thanks for the trouble. It actually comes very close to the bootleg telecine in color from what I can see, it is pretty much the same on the vintage doc The Making of STAR WARS also. Then I strongly believe what zombie84 already said, that it's probably more accurate or closer in color pallette of the original -77 print in just that scene than the THX/GOUT version is.

Yeah, but still the tape is waaay too light during the whole movie, here's a couple of more examples just for shits and giggles:

here's our bluish version from the print:

Can I introduce you to these three guys:

I'm talking about the dark spot of dirt above Luke's head, and two bright flecks between the twin suns. These appear on the GOUT DVD on the penultimate frame before the scene change.

The same pattern appears on the SWE technidisc pressing:

But they do not appear on the various transfers of the 1995 French THX LD (this is from the Moth3r transfer):

I don't believe that their removal is due to DVNR, as the pattern of dirt spots that appear on the following frame matches the GOUT/DC.

here is our version of it from the print, sorry not the exact

frame, when i get that, i'll post that, but it's nice to see the

binary sunset:

this is with uncorrected color.

here's a larger view of the frame:

Perhaps you could collaborate with none and add your frame data to his shot list spreadsheet?

good idea, i've seen that.

but it might get messy with all the versions out there.

i'll let him know. but we need to standardize

on how to proceed.
