Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

ok finally created a vimeo account,

after all the hassles with youtube.

the first part is without the filmguard treatment,

and the second is with the treatment.

1080p WMV (note: was a half hour away

from being converted online - done now!)

burn marks for reel 3:

===============

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Star-Wars-Tantives-Orange-Items-Thread-other-unintended-objects/post/585482/#TopicPost585482

yes, they're scratchy,

but we'll be cleaning them up!

got to see reel 4, very nice..

and the beginning of the tricky

trash compactor scene looks pretty good too!

we're about 70% of the way there.

In all pre 2004 versions of this shot, the stormtrooper passing near the camera seems to have been affected by some composition error where something was scribbled over one of the composite elements. Check it out, there's clearly a sign saying something like B FFET 23 over his path:

cool!

will have to keep an eye for that one.. if we have it.

of course, we have a much better print,

and with cleanup and some color correction,

that version looks fantastic!

these look great, even these prints are very watchable, makes me excited for the better print!!

My above post was a reply to this. I can't edit it for some reason. I totally agree and can't wait.

well, i thought the tests were a very poor representation.

the trailer is more indicative of the quality.

onto reel 4 preview soon!

Well when the time comes, before you leave please let us know who we need to contact regarding updates on the other 2 movies.

don't worry, when the time comes,

people will post some sort of information here,

or via a blog...

it all depends on how this goes. if we need to

go completely anonymous. i'm sure a release through

myspleen or newsgroups will just 'show up' when done.

i happen to be active here now. but if and

when the time comes, i'm sure the moderators of

this board will be contacted, or some provision will

be made to alert people when the time comes.

none of us are on facebook, twitter, or any other

social media, so that doesn't work. i have email

addresses of all the blog members. and i'm sure

the most active ones will be made aware of any

news.

please please please capture jedi too if you have any concern the prints will be confiscated or otherwise made unavialable.  To have SW and Empire but not Jedi would be heartbreaking (to me, anyways)

+1. I would hate for anything to happen before Jedi was finished. :(

there are provisions in place, if and when we get jedi.

and there will be team members that will look into it.

but its a few years down the road, and it has nothing

to do with any print confiscation or anything like that.

I just want to take a moment to say "thank you" for working on this incredible project.  After years of trying to squeeze a little more out of the same less-than-stellar sources...and resisting the urge to punch babies over the many unresolvable flaws in GOUT...the thought of watching (and working with) a "trilogy" source of this potential still feels unbelievable.  Never before have I been this excited about a fan effort :)

thanks, but hold off on those until its out!

anyways, i think as soon as it comes out, we'll probably stop discussing

anything more here. and move it back to a different blog perhaps.

(not the same as before). no need to impact the OT.com one,

just trying to be cautious. and will definitely be laying low, and

not try to draw attention to it at all. if people find it on their own

great, but there won't be any big promotion or anything. it will

just show up.

Let me tell you that I am impressed about this project. Really! It is a tribute to the movies itsself.

Is the actual work done on the 4k version or on the 1080p version?

(I got demotivated for the german project since the laserdisc player which arrived was not working but this could be something to motivate me getting this project going again.)

we work in the higher resolutions whenever possible,

and apply all the fixes there first,  and then downsample,

color correct, and render.

here's a reference to how some scenes are

being cleaned up, including han shot first,

i have a feeling there's going to be a lot of

updated projects that will incorporate this

release as a newer standard.

I'm pretty excited. I've had some ideas for a while for a project like this: I'm going to put little CGI robots all over the place. Maybe some extra Stormtroopers riding dewbacks...I might even fix that Han/Jabba deleted scene and throw that in there.

haha, actually, the deleted scenes from the bluray are

interesting to me.. and will fit in pretty well with the

grindhouse versions... one, with them cleaned up, and

one with them as they are:

Here is what I got.
Reel changing locations by dialog
For dummy’s.
It is not frame accurate but it will give you an idea
of where in the hole movie the Reel changes are.

If you'd like frame accurate numbers, head on over to Mallwalker's Reel Length thread:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Reel-lengths/topic/11666/

(was working on an update of the above link which will incorporate frame numbers.  preview here: http://fd.noneinc.com/cue/cue.html but with all those pics why not just put up the video, so haven't worked on it in a while...)

yeah, that's a start.

i'm not sure, but at some point,

i'll end up doing a frame count, and

possibly scene by scene also to update

the listing i worked on. and we can

establish that for a standard of comparison.
