Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

I know about what was previously said but I was hoping to get more specifics on what model numbers on the equipment being used.  I understand the basics.  What is the film being projected on?  Ground glass?  I would like to construct something similar maybe with a Nikon D300 shooting RAW files.  Thor's footage with the scanner was stupendous.  The stills look good but moving video might be something completely different.  I doubt a consumer camera has the dynamic range needed to capture all the information from film.

from cinch, who made the machine:

about the transfer machine:

it's a dukane film strip projector. i'm using only the original lenses of the projector and the canon.

the only mods i did was to replace the original lamp with a lcd light source, motorize the pulldown mechanism/intermittent movement and to install a trigger contact for the canon.

that's pretty much it. not really that complicated.

hope this helps for now.

[frame data] - _star_wars_GOUT_NTSC_widescreen (V1.0 now complete)

on another note,

i came across the work that althor1138

did here in combining the GOUT and SE:

in the script there are frame references:

Time

how about a sticky topic for all the new people

that show up from time to time in the preservation

section?

something like a FAQ or starters guide.

they always ask the same kind of questions and

get the same responses mostly.

yes, there is a project index sticky topic here:

----------------------------------------------------------

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Project-Index-Star-Wars-Preservation-and-Other-Projects/topic/2450/

but its overwhelming, and not up to date.

also, there was the issue with the links also

that might impact people.

this would clear up several threads and help new

people because they could all be referred to it.

again, these are just to show some tests,

if you notice, you will see more image

Actually, I think most ROTJ prints were LPP, so if stored properly, they shouldn't be faded at all (the one stored in the LoC for example apparently has beautifully preserved colours).  Empire unfortunately is a different story. I'm not sure how well preserved are the colours on Puggo's 16mm prints of ESB and ROTJ but those could in theory serve as a reference.

we have 'our' reference for empire. and the people that do have

return of the jedi have said they are LPP prints. so those will be

pretty accurate.

I've also been playing with capturing the optical audio tracks on that 1 sec clip I posted the other day.  I've managed to capture it by cropping each channel with avisynth and saving it as a 24bit bitmap and opening the waveform image in a program called imagetosound.  I've managed to capture it at 32400 samples per second with 8bits per channel(limited by the resolution).  I'm wondering how you guys are going about capturing it and what kind of quality it achieves? The 1 second I got sounds pretty awesome lol.

EDIT:  Little off topic but I didn't know where else to put it.

you should start another thread about the optical track

conversion, and discuss it there.

we have access to other equipment that can work

with getting the audio.

I doubt a consumer camera has the dynamic range needed to capture all the information from film.

gotcha,

i'll find out what i can. although some of the equipment

is no longer made, or made from improvised parts.

it's basically a modified film strip projector.

the pulley system is based off a vhs motor, and connected

so that it moves at the rate of about 2 frames per second.

we used a manual system before which was much more

tedious. there's a lens between the camera and the

projector. i'll try to find out the light source type also.

How long have you been working on this project -1?  Will you post schematics of your scanning machine so that others may attempt to do what you are doing?  It would be very helpful for even non Star Wars related material.

this is where most of that information is

concerning the equipment:

browser exposes HTML when posting a reply

Are you familiar with Chrome dev tools? If so, the next time the editor fails to load, check the main HTML element at the top of the element inspector and see if it has a class of "js". I need to determine if the problem is confined to the editor or if all JavaScript is failing when you see this problem. Thanks.

thanks,

i will try it out when it happens again, and

let you know how it goes.

Hehe I always loved that stormtrooper hitting his head.
Anyway I love how sharp those shots are, if the non "play" versions are better than that even as you claim we should have a pretty damn good version of the movie by the end of all this.

One little question: I was rereading the entire thread, looks like you had episode 5 but it was too damaged to scan in? Or did you obtain another?

episode 5 is safely transferred.

however, there might be some improvements

coming. we'll see. i'm not involved with that.

also, there are some solid leads for return of

the jedi.

the outfits look like a different color (lighting?)

Missed this thought of yours, if you refer to the blue color of their shirts, that's how they are supposed to look, they shouldn't be gray but they do appear that way sometimes in many early transfers.

hmm. interesting.

i think in our version, they're locked into

a brownish looking color. will make a note

of it.

You mean you see the HTML in the finished post? Or you see it in the editor?

this is what happens..

sometimes i post a reply.

and i see the HTML in the editor,

and it stays that way.

other times, i see a flash of the HTML code,

and then it gets rendered correctly.

i am using the latest version of CHROME at this

time. i haven't tried it in IE (usually use 7/8). don't

have firefox or opera.

here's another test clip with one of my

favorite scenes, where the stormtrooper

on the right bumps his head. ha ha

anyways, don't be too impressed by these.

the other versions we have are way better

and much cleaner. these were just simple

proofs of concepts to play around with.

Info: cleaning up dirty frames for scenes
Time

here's another 30 seconds of the previous clip.

more raw red footage from the test reel.

lots of noise, dirt and scratches going on.

it has one of my favorite parts, where the stormtrooper

on the far right bumps his head on the door!

it was a long time before i ever noticed it,

and there was even a sound effect for it. ha ha
