Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal

I don't know if this has been answered before: Are you making a 4k version, that will be scaled down to 1080p when you're done, or do you scale the stuff down before you start working?

Will you also release the 4k version for download (if you're making one).

I'm asking because I would try to recreate the Movietrailer for Star Wars in 1080p, but the Trailer was in 1.78:1, which means I would have to upscale the movie first...

we're scaling stuff down before working on it:

http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Making-our-own-35mm-preservation-my-crazy-proposal/post/584238/#TopicPost584238

it's a lot harder to work in 4K..

the raw files alone would take up to 15-20 Terabytes

to hold the scan... i can't imagine how much bigger

the video would be.. instead of a 25 Gig disc, you

would have to use 50 Gig blurays, etc.. and unless

you had a really fast computer, you woudn't be able

to watch video at that resolution (i can't).

What in God's name is the point of posting thumbnails if you post the full-size ones right after?

those aren't full size.

look again, they're clipped.

Hi Negative1

been browsing this thread with amazement for a while-----thanks for posting all these pics------forgive me for being unfamiliar with the context of these fotos----- but have you aquired a complete 35mm print?

we have 2 prints of star wars:

1 six reels - lpp spanish

2 five reels - english red faded + extra reel 5 (10 minutes)

3 six reels - english empire strikes back pink faded + extra reel 3

A few pictures taken inside a theater in '77, posted a few years ago by Belbucus in the The XØ Project thread:

The pictures above where all taken with the same camera settings, which suggests that the scenes in the canyon appeared quite dark.

here's our versions:

thanks for the comments everyone.

star wars is coming to the end for the first

pass, and the color correction stuff should

be done pretty quickly. the adjustments

and stability stuff along with the dirt

and cleanup is still going to take awhile.

along with the sound and final renders.

we still don't have a date, but as it gets

closer, we'll keep posting updates.

here's some more comparison esb shots

vs 35mm and 70mm scans..

although we've done a lot of work on empire, it's going

to have wait quite awhile until we polish off star wars

first, and then we'll get back to it. some people would

be ok with it in the condition its in now. but only if you

could take the 15-20 minutes that still need a lot of

clean up and digital fixes to stability and dewarping.

thanks everyone for the kind words.

we appreciate it! and harmy, cinch

wants me to let you know he saw

your workprint for star wars, is very

impressed with your color corrections.

they match most of our colors too! very good job!

here's some comparison shots i've posted

before of our version versus some of the

35mm and 70mm scans out there.

our version is on the right:

The Mono Mix Restoration Project (Released)
Time

skyjedi2005 said:

Are not there limitations in a academy monaural track even if it is capped at the highest possible resolution and bitrate for sound.

Does not optical in general have limitations because the audio is on the print itself?

Nowadays if they wanted to they could reproduce the sound as exactly as heard in the recording studio off the first gen master.

Though Lucas has not done that.

The blu ray is a poor imitation of the original 77 mix in any of its forms.

Then again out of the few films from the 70's i want to own on blu ray like Superman, Star Wars, or star trek none of them have the original 6 track 70mm mix.

do you have a surround sound system properly configured?

i don't know too many people that do. i'm an audiophile,

but listen mostly to music.

i'm sure there are videophiles here that do, but overall

most people don't. i'm sure the stereo soundtracks are

the most listened to.

besides the nostalgia and novelty factor, who listens

to the mono version mostly, and what quality does it

really need to be? its not that good of a qualilty in

the original..

i'm sure hairy_hen could tell you all about the differences

and fixes in the 4.1 and 5.1 surround versions and

remasters. some people like having the newer mixes

to sound more impressive.

i'll stick to the stereo 35mm versions.

I downloaded the video and I love the shots that expand that show the soundtrack.  Very cool.  It does actually look pretty good too.

sure, thanks. glad to hear all the interest

and support from all of you.

i have another test clip that shows something

similiar. will post that in awhile.

in the meantime, here's the second set

of test color correcting the red clips:
