Making our own 35mm preservation--my crazy proposal
Time

in the mood for checking out what

we did with ESB 35mm..

ok, so i went through an assembled

a cut of that also... we did a preview

a few months ago.. and it was cool

to watch it after the preview 0 of star wars..

so a double header..

i'm thinking the same thing will happen

with esb.....

============================

1) pink grindhouse - will be a raw pink faded

original version, for those that want to play

around with it

2) grindhouse + - will be just color corrected,

but no stabilization, and not much dirt/dust

cleanup either..

both are watchable as is.. and

empire is about 75-80% done..

and so..

after several years of waiting,

and hoping... and wondering...

and thinking... and wishing....

the first one minute and fifty-two seconds

of 'star wars' has appeared:

Star Wars Colortiming & Cinematography (was What changes was done to STAR WARS in '93?)

I can tell you from personal experience that this is very difficult to achieve. The speed of a film projector isn't a solid 24 fps and you'll end up going out of sync even if you manage to hit the play button on the secondary source fast enough.

PS I am assuming that you are thinking of running the film print through a projector and the sound through a cd player or mp3 player... This is what I had to do when the answer print for a film festival I was projecting had sound that was way out of sync, and we had to burn the sound files to a cd, and sit next to a stereo with our finger on the pause button, waiting for the smpte countdown to hit 2. We would sometimes be off by a few milliseconds and that would mess the whole sync and no way to turn off the projector and rewind.

it might be tricky.. but we'll test it out before showing it.

of course once all the reels are spliced together, it shouldn't

be that hard to get a sound synced to it... the fallback is just

to show the digital version..

in the beginning...

there was star wars...

here's a look at the comparison

of the cleanup of the original intro..

remember, this is a red faded print

that had the original crawl which was

used to splice into the lpp:

^^ I am convinced that the scene with Obi-Wan was intentionally blown out that way.

If you notice, the part before Obi-Wan comes, which is in the same location, has normal colors.

It's precisely when Obi-Wan appears that the frame turns white.

For home video, they were probably trying to correct everything to "normal" and so they saw these blown out whites as a mistake and regraded it to match the part that had come before.

Now that you mention it, the scene is beginning to remind me of the scene in Lord of The Rings: The Two Towers where Gandalf the White first appears. Maybe they were going for matching the brightness of the scene with the spirituality of the character, or something like that. But maybe the connection wasn't all that clear, which is why they toned it down for later releases.

our 35mm lpp version is not blown out... in fact

ours might be darker.

however it probably came out in 1981/1982...

due to the scenes being shot at different times,

and places.. there is discontinuity all throughout

the tatooine scenes.. they will be evened out in

our version though.

Have been playing with your frame count data, and found 6 errors.  The easy way to find them is you have frame begin/end if you subtract them you get 6 negatives.

50941 - 50042 hologram ends *

63084 - 62892 they walk into cantina *

100979 - 100679 chewie growls

103505 - 103428 luke and han attack

156529 - 156504 rebel spackship pilot

160403 - 155622 wedge looks around *

* were fixable just by comparing to the neighboring values, just typos.  The other three require a little further look.

Really hope there's a way to link the excel data to a video editor, so want to watch the movie where the shots are reordered by length.  But for now will have to live with a graph of the data.

Many thanks for pull out these numbers.

thanks for checking it out..

i'll have a chance this week to look at them again,

and try to find out what happened.

I understand that this is a 1080p project, but since you've gone through the tremendous effort you have, are you going to be able to have a full resolution version stored anywhere for posterity, until the technology to view and present 4K is available to the masses?

we're not working in 4k..

anyways, the more we think about the issue of distribution

of raw files. the further it slips away through our fingers...

we are looking into the possibility of some archive service,

but even that will be a longshot...

the more i think about it, there will most likely only be our

own personal archives, and possibly one given out to a single

person via mail/drives, and then that person could pass it onto

another.. and form a chain that way... that's how it used to

work in the past... might have to bring that model out of

retirement.. as more time passes, the less likely anything

will happen.. but you never know?

Star Wars movie prints WOULD benefit from this...can you hear me Mr. Lucas...

generalfrevious said:

George Lucas is still arrogant and has committed a serious error in suppressing the OOT like this. No amount of preservations is going to change that. The OT does not deserve to be pushed underground like this and have the SE take its place with the general public not knowing the difference. Hell, on the Blu-rays themselves they no longer advertise that they are different editions from the theatrical releases! In five years time the SE will have been around as long as the OOT. You can ignore public opinion, but you cannot ignore the root cause of why this website and these forums exist, because Lucas refuses to release the originals out of some sadistic contempt with his fans, who by the way have made him a billionaire twice over (even though he is one of the least deserving men to have all that wealth). His arrogance is the very reason I act like an defeatist half the time on these forums! The institution that has shaped the SW franchise since 1997 must be torn down. And, I'm sorry to break it to you, fan preservations are not going to do it.

i understand what you are saying from that point of you.

in fact, i agree with most of what you are saying too..

so for that part, i empathize with you.

however, instead of living with NOTHING, and refusing to

try to change the situation. i decided to be more proactive,

and take things into my own hands..

for the people that are open to the idea that we CAN

have something that is beyond anything else out there,

given the short amount of time we had, and the limited

resources.. i'm perfectly happy, and most of the other

people that check it out will be too...

you never know what will come up in the future,

if you really want a new hope, you have to believe

in it first...

Regardless of the preservations, we still haven't won against GL. I hate to see a future where all that is left of the OOT is these preservations just because of one man's arrogance and contempt. That's what I hate about the present: anyone with enough money can override public opinion. Most people love SW because of the OOT, and we have had the SE supplant it for 15 years now; no one deserves this. Sadly in another 15 years whatever current version of the SE will still be the official version of the OT. My hatred for George Lucas knows no bounds for what he did to those three films, in spite of all the fans' effort to preserve them.

you mean 'YOU' haven't won against GL..

anyone that can't admit that we're fine now, wants

to be defeatist, and along with the rest of the people

that can't see what's going on, deserve to feel that way.

WHO CARES ABOUT PUBLIC OPINION!

we have our own money, and have done plenty to get

to the point we're at. we don't need lucasfilm, 20th century

fox, or any of those other entities...

it's almost game over for this topic..

i'm already there.. and everyone else

that wants it, will have access to it also.

it's just a matter of time now..

star wars IS SAFE NOW.

Thank the maker.

As impressed as I am by Harmy's recent Despecialized v2, knowing that a scan of the actual 100% real deal exists is extremely gratifying.

thanks, but technicallly, unless you watch the raw version,

with correction..... you'll be seeing a digitally altered version

that's about 95% original, incuding stabilization, clean up,

dewarping, and digital fixes..... still that's much better than any

other version out there!

sometimes i forget,

since i've been watching only bits

and pieces of the original lately.

that i really haven't BEEN WATCHING

the movie at all, looking for things..

i think this is the 5th time, i've watched

the original 1977 version in its entirety.

the first was in 1977 and the second

in 1979, and the other two might have

been at other peoples house on video/cable.

i usually watch the SE versions, so it's

weird not seeing jabba, or the cg creatures/ships,

or the effects or colors from those versions!

interesting..................

Can that be a download as soon as it is finished?

i doubt it will be finished before the release.

the best case would be around the same time.

i still have to add all the videos in higher quality.

and go through and make sure all the links work.

it might be better to just put the data in one area.

and create new video chapters for all the sequences.

it would be easier to watch. but then it wouldn't be

integrated into the site... also, i could just leave the

low resolution files in there, and do the video separately.

still working on it..

Puggo - you're being extremely generous by even considering the 'no-remote' issue, and it would seem crass to tell you to drop it but...I'm not sure that targeting such a slim demographic (people who lost their remotes or don't have a DVD player that has an IR receiver built-in, which I've never heard of) is worth your time. But do what you will...

it did have a play button on the dvd player.

however, for some reason, we were stuck on

the reel select menu and couldn't get it to start.

we ended up using a chapter select button to

get it to work.

about the bonus content

from the jedi1.com blog..

i will be previewing an ISO of the

dvd that will contain the material

from there... its 3.6 gig right now!

anyways... i'll double check it, and

we might replace some of the videos

with higher quality versions..

i don't want it to be too big... but

it should still fit as much as possible

onto a 4.7G SD DVD...

you will be able to download this also

a separate extra bonus, with background

material on this, other topics, and also

quite a bit on the ESB 35mm project also...

more on this once i get it...

thanks to williarob for this!

I also have the sound menu, which isn't a motion menu, it's fixed. Do you know offhand how to put a time limit in DVD-Lab on a fixed menu?

If they need it to automatically play from that menu because they don't have a remote, how did they get to that menu in the first place?

he's referring to a new menu, not one

in the other release. i guess if you did

get to this menu, and let it sit. it's good

to have default action for timing out.

the default is for the menu chapter option

on the old  just comes up. that's how we got it to.

just by putting the disc in.
