Nothing wrong with LG BD burners. Mine works perfectly. I already burned quite a few BDs with it and they all work perfectly, even in my BD player.

I must have got a defective one.  It takes one bad apple to spoil the bunch for me though, definitely won't be purchasing any LG products in the future.

especially NOT this $20k 84" - 4k resolution UHDTV!

team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)
Time

watched the full preview 0 version

again yesterday... i had to do some

tricky sound synching over the last

2 reels for some reason.. but it works.

i know some of the 'extra frames' are

because of the way the reels are

split, and putting the temporary sound in.

honestly, you could watch 90% of it raw

and be happy. it's that last 10% that's

going to take up the rest of the time.

=================================

it's not a question of how anymore,

it's just a matter of when.

star wars IS SAFE NOW.

i feel relieved.

Info: cleaning up dirty frames for scenes
Time

captainsolo said:

You know, I hate to say it, but I sincerely hope that the untouched warts and all scan is released -1. Those clips despite being dirty and faded look wonderful. Even with the expanding frame. ;) I dunno maybe watching degraded prints of films for too many years has warped my mind or something. How are you compensating for the red shift? It looks quite good for a start on these attempts.

we are not using the red prints for anything.

they were purely a test. we may use some frames

if they have less grain.

the lpp source and other THINGS are all we need

for releasing it...

we haven't transferred alll the red reels, but if we

do, i'm just keeping them for my own version..

the grindhouse, and grindhouse+deleted scene versions will

be the LPP with very slight noise removal, and

some of the more difficult scenes fixed.

What do you drive?
Time

plymouth duster-> subaru station wagon [5 speed]->

ford tempo->chrysler k-car -> nissan sentra  [5 speed]->

dodge ram 1500-> 1991 toyota corrola [5 speed]

i prefer manual stick shift over automatic anyday.

also, the older the better the car. don't need

fancy electronics, computers, or distractions.

i don't think i'll ever buy a new car again,

i'll stick with old used ones! i alternate

between american and foreign cars.

but japanese ones seem to be cool.

To see the Huffyuv-encoded (sorry, I'm lazy) AVI sample of the aforementioned technique applied to the infamous speeder shot: click here. Make sure to only click the "Click here to start download from sendspace" link, as all the rest are spam.

Notes:

  • The bottom is, obviously, what you should be looking at.
  • I only did minor cleanup using my RemoveDirtMC script, so there's still some defects/dirt/dust hanging around. These can be fixed with, e.g., Photoshop.
  • The affine image alignment forced me to crop a bit from the end result.

Enjoy!

cool.

could you post screenshots over here:

and continue discussion over there?

doing some comparisons with the blurays

and the hdtv versions...

selected scenes, some are comparable,

some are much better.. the rest is at least

on par with the detail...

i don't think we want to adjust the contrast

too much, which will cause artifacts.

also the grain levels are higher in ours,

so that gives it quite a different feel..

i'll try to post some screenshots ...

Then you'll have some 'splainin' to do, Lucy

i think the biggest one, might

be after reel 1 and the fadeout..

i still haven't found the second set of

reel change markers for it.

all the other ones are captured from header

to tails, so i know that we have them completely.

we may have to go back and get those.

hopefully it won't take too long.

ok, i'm pretty sure we have 99%+ of the

frames needed now.

there might some small gaps here and there,

i haven't checked for sure.

when we make our final assembly cut,

i'll go through the details and post our

findings for our new reference.

we will have to wait on empire, because

thats going to a lot longer, and will be

trickier to do because we still have a few

adjustments to make to it.

My point is, with the higher resolution and improved compression, I can finally appreciate the quality of this print. I could imagine seeing an LPP print projected in a theater, looking like this.

thanks.

there will definitely be some 'bootleg' screening(s)

of these prints in a theater later this year. i plan to

invite all my friends that would find it interesting.

we'll have a secondary sound source

for english. but if that doesn't work out, we'll fall back

to a digital projection..

if/when it happens, i'll take plenty of pictures and

videos of it.

Very nice work. I'm impressed with the quality of the clips posted in the frame cleaning thread. I like the grindhouse feel of the unclean video as well, hopefully you release a "dirty" version as well when finished?

that's the plan.. but it will be 'slightly' cleaned up.

there are some parts that are rough. although the

colors are consistent through most parts.

I'm sure this has been asked before, but if Harmy ever decides to go for round three, could parts of your 35mm project potentially be used as a superior source? I understood that the end result is supposed to look kind of grungy, from what I read in your thread.

we'll work with harmy, of course,

once we're done with our version.

i'm sure there are some parts that

will be helpful.

Is there a place in the DVD menu to select the tracks, or is it only done through the remote?

Yes I have a menu for selecting between them.

if you, could you please make it

autoplay after a set amount of time?

on the puggo grande, i showed it to a

friend, but we were stuck on the menus,

because he lost his dvd remote. and the

player did not have hardware buttons to

move through the menus! (It was a cheap

player)..

It got better like in the last pics but the ones before looks liked they're DNR'ed to hell and back. To much digital cleaning, or just low rez pics like you too said?

very few of those have been cleaned.

those are original shots, some color corrected,

that went through 2 different video downconversions,

and then compressed to jpgs.

the last set were

one video conversion -> slightly altered colors for some -> jpg

As for "we can still watch it" , well, yeah, kinda. For a while. But I hope that you've noticed how quickly technology is developing now. VHS machines can no longer be bought, to the best of my knowledge.

dude, look around.

there are tons of combo vcr/dvd players STILL being made.

they're not THAT hard to find.

I wish the fanbase was more up in arms over this, I really do. It's strange to see so many people who claim to be Star Wars fans just shrug over the destruction of this piece of cultural history - the three movies that created their entire fandom disappears, and they don't care, beause they're too distracted by SW in 3D or some other LucasArts style-over-substance-product that has absolutely nothing to do with central thematic messages of the trilogy that started it all - and when people like me point this out, we're told we have no right to complain.

some people are doing something about it!

look around you in the preservation forum!

Oh and in response to -1, those look really dark. Way darker than I remember. But until I see them in the full context of the video it would be hard to comment more. If you post that scene (corrected) in one of your 35mm threads, let me know.

the original IS a lot darker than people remember it.

also, due to the nature of the print, and the bulb used

to project it. that has a big impact on it. we will try to

simulate that also in our version.

i'm sure harmy's version is very close to the ib tech

as it would have looked.

funny thing, i have the collectors version briefcase

there's a lot more discussion about this stuff here:
