team negative1 - star wars 1977 - 35mm theatrical version (Released)
Time

Dunedain said:

Wow, looks great negative1! And this is just a recording of the tv, and the cleanup and restoration are not even done yet. The colors are so much better than the home video versions, lush and deep, just excellent. Real 35mm film rules... :) It makes the colors of the home video versions seem like skim milk, compared to velvety rich and smooth organic whole milk, just no comparison. :)

i'm not a milk fan, unless it's chocolate.

we might have some in the fridge.

come by and check it out, and

stay around for some more:

hmm,

what's the issue?

i usually haven't had any problems,

try different browsers, or update your flash plugin.

I kind of want to get some people together to watch the first two Puggos (and maybe use the X9 of Jedi), but I don't know how many people would actually appreciate it or if they would just complain about the poor quality.

why not show harmy's v2/2.1 afterwards? or the

next time you meet after that? depends on if they like

the 'film' experience or are going for quality.

Last one loaded yay!

I did notice that darth vader seems very matte black. Why would the print have him be so matte? Is it because you recorded it with a camera?

i think it's always been like.. matte black.

it's glossy in the other ones.. guess darth

vader didn't get his helmet cleaned by the

service that day.. ha ha..

Side by Side Documentary (Digital vs Film)
Time

thanks for the heads up.

watched it today..

this should be required watching for anyone on this site.

or for anyone that wonders why film is disappearing and

digital is taking over..

it does seem like a long ad for cameras..

and keanu is actually decent in his questions..

it covers a lot of basic technology and history and

the speakers and examples are interesting..

of course there's quite a good representation of star wars

and lucas about all the pro digital side...

very good..

I guess I use V3 because it's anamorphic.

Maybe you're right, maybe I should use the official GOUT discs, because I have those too. I didn't know there was any cropping difference, however small.

Here's my first test with the high-res images: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Cropping-the-Original-Trilogy-35mm-vs-dvd-gout/post/595901/#TopicPost595901

actually it was more of a joke

(see corrected version)..

Info Wanted: Best "official" color source?
Time

You_Too said:

As far as I know, none of the official releases (even that 1982 tape) have accurate colors, at least if aiming for the original theatrical look.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't all video releases made from separate prints which didn't have the alien subs in them? I know some of them had dark scenes brightened at least.

Your PS78 tape might just be the best we have. Or negative1's upcoming release of course.

well, if 'official' means coming off a real print

then yeah, maybe ours will be... harmy's tech ib reference

would also be pretty official then too..

but if you mean commercial public releases then no,

that would have to be one of the vhs/laserdisc releases.

the ced matches the vhs colors i think..

Cropping the Original Trilogy : 35mm vs dvd (gout)
Time

Erikstormtrooper said:

Stupid question: Do effects (composites, matte paintings, laser blasts, etc) always go to the edge of the frame?

from what i've seen, yes, they go right to the edges...

also back to the cropping (again),

the final release is going to be cropped for sure,

we can have some fun later on, but again for the

sake of stabilization and working with the video

all the versions will have some parts cropped.

it's just an early version that i have that is uncropped

mostly for testing, but to ensure a standard image

across them, they have been setup that way for

the final renders. unless you get the raw files, and

then line those up, and try to stabilize them, that

will be a lot more work, and we have many other

things to work on, right?

Most of the time, I'm watching on a tiny 17" monitor and listening through audiophile headphones, but on occasion I will watch in my "souped up living room" - 56" 1080p flat screen hooked up to a custom built surround sound system. It gets the job done. :)

what did you customize with the sound system?

Puggo GRANDE - 16mm restoration (Released)

doubleKO said:

Puggo - Jar Jar's Yoda said:

One trick I've learned is to err on the side of audio being late.  In the real world, our brains have come to expect the light to arrive before the sound.  So if the audio is late, you might notice it.  But if the audio arrives early, it feels really wierd.  Doesn't work for close-ups.

I'm quite sensitive to audio advances and delays and I have to say I would prefer a 100ms audio advance to a 50ms audio delay. The former is more obvious, but the latter is more frustrating for some reason.

i've been doing some syncing lately too,

and delays are more noticeable to me to..

anyone find other links or places for this?

still looking for the Swedish version of the 16mm..
