List of Blu-ray with altered aspect ratios
Time

Well fuck, I guess the 16:9 HDTV version of Galaxy Quest was just a crop job.

I guess we'll have to get a 35mm print to know whether the theatrical prints were also cropped, or opened.

And scope isn't totally dead, as long as there are directors who shoot on film. Christopher Nolan and J.J. Abrams are still shooting in Panavision. I loved seeing that stretched-out lens flaring in the 35mm portions of Interstellar. (And it's going to be great seeing Episode VII in true scope.)

Just some of the reasons why I love the films that Nolan and Abrams put out.  :D  The shots in Interstellar were ridiculously awesome...  Also, I am really eager to see Episode VII with Abrams at the helm.  I read in the past that he wanted to bring back the aesthetic of the OT.  To do this, he was supposedly going to be using miniatures more rather than relying on CGI so much.  And if he's using Panavision, that's got me even more excited for it!  :-)

I was under the impression it was open matte on Netflix.

My mistake, it was 1.85:1 on Sky in the UK

I wonder if it was opened to that or cropped? Seems to be some debate on that.

They are not showing it right now, but some people here:

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1845087

Saying it is opened

Barring an official release from the studio in the future, the SkyHD version probably the closest we'll ever get to the 1:90:1 ratio of the IMAX version.

Help: looking for... 1997 special editions?
Time

There's a version of the '97 SE version of Episode IV which was done by Harmy... compiled from various sources and it looks very good.

It is available on tehparadox... Start up a free account and do a search for "star wars harmy." You'll find a thread called "Harmy's STAR WARS Trilogy Despecialized Edition - NO DISCUSSIONS/REQUESTS (SEE POST #2)."

There are links there for Harmy's Despecialized versions of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi...  The links (and description) for Harmy's REspecialized version are under those for ROTJ.  What's pretty cool about this release is that it includes the original 5.1 DTS-HD audio as heard during the theatrical run of the SE's.

Hope that helps!

Movies with wrong color grading *** UPDATED ***
Time

The Gladiator dvd looks totally different to the remastered blu-ray as well, so much so that I actually went ahead and recreated the dvd look of gladiator in HD by using a high quality open matte hdtv release and reframing it shot by shot to match the dvd framing as closely as possible. Never got round to releasing it though, wasn't sure whether people would be interested.

kk650,

This very much interests me as it is one of my favorite films.  I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction...

Thanks!

Info Wanted: 'A Nightmare On Elm Street' - Original Theatrical Audio question?
Time

I was wondering… I’ve yet to see any preservations of original theatrical audio tracks from the Nightmare On Elm Street Films.   I know there’s a pretty concerted effort to preserve audio tracks here in this community that are not already available “officially…” It got me thinking… are the mono/stereo audio tracks from DVDs and blu-rays the actual original audio tracks?  Or are they strictly mixdowns of the new surround sound mixes (much like The Terminator mono mix on DVD)?

Thank you.

Has anyone gone to see the one week only 30th anniversary reissue in theaters?

Yes!!!  :-D  I have!!  Actually my first time seeing one of my favorite movies in theaters...  I'm lucky enough to have seen it in a theater with 4K projection... And it looks absolutely fantastic.  The colors are absolutely vibrant and gorgeous.  And even though it's not the original mix, the audio was great too!  :-D

Harmy's STAR WARS Respecialized Edition '97 - AVCHD and MKV Released
Time

Hmmm.....so I'm trying to make a Blu-Ray from the .mkv using the same method I used to make the awesome v2.5 despecialized but something is messing up the aspect ratio on playback. And, strangely, only my Oppo BDP-83 can play it all. When it does, it is stretching the image vertically (thus eliminating the black bars). Before you ask, no it is not my TV or the BD player, as they play all other discs just fine.

I suspect it is probably tsmuxer. The last time I did anything with it, I was all the way back on version 1.10.6 I believe, but I started with recent versions of everthing this time around and tsmuxer is at 2.6.12 now. I do see some changes to the interface for sure. I have some vague recollection that the older tsmuxer is preferred for this source material, but I could be wrong. I also remember seeing the option to create a "blu-ray folder" (and, in fact, that is what I did before) but that is missing from 1.10.6. In short, I am confused to say the least.

Since I usually just take the default settings for everything, does anyone know what I need to look at to fix this?

Perhaps the AR setting? It is at "As source" right now, which also seems to be what is was with the older tsmuxer. If I change it, none of the other choices seem to be good. Certainly not 16:9 as that is what I think I am getting now.

Another possibility is ImgBurn is doing something but I do not think so. I used the latest version of that to burn an iso from tsmuxer and then an older verion (2.4.2.0) to burn a Blu-Ray Folder. Both gave the same results.

I want to get this right for my next burn. Already wasted two BD-Rs.    :(

According the info I read on tehp..., the resolution is 1280x540p... So the source video is not a 16:9 ratio (which is needed for blu-ray discs, if I understand it correctly).  It looks as if the black bars have been trimmed off, leaving just the picture for the film itself.  However, I've noticed that the AVCHD version has a resolution of 1280x720p, which is 16:9.

Info Wanted: 'Jurassic Park' - DTS Edition DVD
Time

Found a used copy of the original Jurassic Park DVD with DTS audio at a local shop, but I’m a little bit apprehensive about the purchase.  There’s been a lot of talk around these parts about preserving original Cinema DTS audio mixes for films.

So, I’m wondering…  Does this Jurassic Park DVD have a theatrical DTS mix or was this simply a new mix done strictly for the DVD release?  Even if it’s not original theatrical audio, how does that mix sound?

I have the DVD with the 5.1 Dolby Digital track already, and I am wondering if the DTS track on this disc warrants the high price tag for a used DVD.

kk650's Star Wars Saga: Regraded and Semi-Specialized (Released)
Time

I'm so psyched for these releases!!  Was about to grab your old ones when you first started talking about the next wave of regraded releases... So I decided to wait for the new ones.  So excited!  Will be my first experience with your semi-specialized versions.  I really don't have a problem with many of the Special Edition changes.  There are a few exceptions, of course, haha...
