Info: a Smear-free '93 ?
Time

I hope I haven't building up this LD to something it is not with my "glowing review" as Mallwalker said. It's still just a LD, many people would just shake their head and don't get what I'm so thrilled about when seeing this transfer, but I simply prefer a dirty and noisy picture over a badly cleaned destroyed picture. I'll definitely look into what I'll need to get a descent capture out of it. Right now, I'm just a little occupied with THX.

Look, sir. Droids. V8: http://www.sendspace.com/file/ix8ts2

msycamore, are you going to capture this LD? it appears that dm is not, I asked before if he was, but it seems like only screenshots and info are his specialty.

I would love to capture it, unfortunately I don't think I have the right equipment for it, more importantly perhaps, never done it before. But I definitely plan to do it.

By the way, does anyone have any (relatively) high quality footage from the JSC for the 4-eyed stormtrooper and the Mos Eisley sequence that I might be able to obtain?  I'm thinking of putting them into a possible edit I have in mind, mainly just to see if I can actually do it, but if it works I might end up using them.

The best would of course be if someone could provide you with raw untouched footage. If not, I could upload those scenes from the "V8"- disc for you.

When I now own this Smear-free '93 LD myself, I must say that Star Wars or A New Hope in this case, have never looked better on video than it does on this transfer in terms of colors, nice vibrant colors close to how the '82 LD transfer looked but better and more consistent. In addition to that, you don't have those ugly glue marks every second like the JSC have.

But as always when it comes to these films on video, there's some problems, otherwise it wouldn't be SW, right? ;) The transfer have blown out white levels in a few scenes which the JSC transfer don't have, and as already shown on the screen-caps it loses some picture info, mostly on the sides due to different cropping compared to both the JSC and GOUT. Also, even though this transfer overall have amazing colors, I noticed a few color issues in some spots, in the battle above the Death Star - colorless TIE lasers in one scene for example. But this is all mostly nitpicking.

This is definitely the best transfer of ANH on LD IMHO. If you have a Laserdisc player and love this film, do yourself a favor and track this down.

One thing I've wondered about, are different fonts and colors possible with DVD subtitles? Would be cool if they could somehow match the style of text used in the movie itself. The studios never seem to do much with subtitles beyond white, yellow, and kind of blocky.

Yes, it's possible to have different fonts and colors within the same stream. But as molly said there is a limitation when it comes to DVD subs and in the way they are stored, they are often quite ugly and blocky. But I have a pretty nice font I'm using that is easy to read, I can post a few samples later.

(And it's really annoying when they inexplicably replace burned in subs with them too.) Closed captions on an old 1980's tv set have more visual appeal. ;)

Yeah, I fully agree with you, I think that one of the reasons we see that so often nowadays is that the studios go back to the original negative more often (which is of course great) where the burned in subs aren't present, I guess. I think the other reason must have to do with making it easier for foreign releases.

erri_wan, I noticed than SEN is named JEN and OMM is named IMM in the Italian closing titles, are they pronounced that way in the film as well?

Those frame numbers were actually worked out by Darth Mallwalker (when I did the original shots, I didn't bother making a note of the frames I used - typical).

But did you see my comment about the blank cell in the first VOB file? If this is included in the d2v file, then all frames will be +15 (SW title card appears at 704 instead of 689).

Ah ok, now I remember that I and Darth Mallwalker had those differences in frame counts in another thread.

Will PM it for you in a moment.

Frames 4626, 5130, 7255, 11070, 26317 and 70943.

Moth3r, don't know what I am doing wrong, but those frame counts are not even close to what I'm seeing when loading my script into virtualdub.

Maybe I could cap the five following Greedo frames for you, but that will make it a little tiresome for you to figure out which one of them is the correct frame.

I might have done some typos here and there, thanks for fixing it. Feel free to send the corrected version back to me via email along with your questions.

I re-watched the video I put on youtube, yes I can see there is a little delay, more noticeable on the car engine noises. If you can fix it without too much effort I won't mind but it's not too disturbing for me.

I have fixed the sync, it was actually just the intro that was off, from the moment the opening titles starts it is good all the way through the film.

I could send you my sub file erri, but it will not work with your video as it is converted to NTSC and also retimed for the audio sync correction I did.

Could you please send me your srt-file again? I forgot to make a copy of it, then I could also point out what I corrected in it.

I'm far from finished with the subs though, it's a lot of tedious work to make it read smoothly. Good subtitles, is subtitles you don't notice that much, I'll do my best.

But this particular sync issue is not a case of bad dubbing, that's not what I'm talking about, just take a listen at the intro again and listen to the audio of the car or the bikes when they cut back and fourth between them, or when the black dancer hologram first appear and you will hear that there is a delay. Maybe it's because of the various bad splicing that is going on. The print(s) they used was afterall in pretty bad shape.

Yes erri_wan, that poster is a real theatrical one.

As for audio, how about "monaural" or something?

Here you have the features:

  • Pan & Scan 4:3 (1.33:1)
  • Sound: Italian Dolby 2.0 Mono
  • Subtitles: English

1971 (1976), Approx. 81 minutes

Italian rating... ??

Myscamore, love your cover!!! That's gonna look awesome. If released as two seperate dvd's maybe have a similar design for both covers but with different art used for each one, so that when sitting on the shelf they look like they are part of a set? Personally i'd like to see this as a two dvd set, more room for bitrate on each disc and i really like Myscamore's cover!

Thanks, but I haven't really done that much yet, I think it's the artwork you guys like. ;) But I'll finish it, and don't let my attempts hinder you from doing cover art, the more the merrier. :) I'll take your suggestions into account when doing cover art for the original cut, I will probably use the '77 poster art for that one or the US homevideo art.

As for how we want to present it, don't worry, I definitely want the LD on a dual layered DVD on its own, I was just thinking that you could release that as a 2-disc set if we would want some extras, a single layer would be enough for that. The material would be stronger linked to that feature than the Italian anyway.

Rogue-theX said:

I did that, wondered if anyone would notice :D I wanted to have thx looking at the displays on the dashboard.

Oh, so it was you... I have a sharp eye. ;) I was actually thinking it was two different versions of the art out there for a second, those small revisions are done quite often.

The Italian video is finished and it's actually quite watchable now. I had a power loss in my building just when the encoding was about to finish, (which was fun, especially when my computer is so damn slow) but when I made the new encode, I screwed up somehow with the videobitrate setting, fortunately in the right direction, this will mean that erri_wan's file that was only 700mb with an average video bitrate of 1060kbps is now about 3gb big with an average of 5118kbps, quite an overkill. I just want to know if it's ok with you? I really don't wanna encode this a third time. It will take a little longer to upload and download though.

I'm going over the Italian audio right now and I noticed that it's out of sync in some places especially in the intro, have you noticed this Silver and erri? it seems to get in sync just as they splice to the opening credits. At first I thought I had done something wrong when I encoded the audio but it's actually this way on the source. I'll see if I can fix it...
