THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)

Doesn't seem to be any closed captions present on the LD captures SilverWook. The DTO-screen is just one of the displays LUH and SEN monitor, what DTO stands for, maybe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_transfer_object don't know.

I'll list a few doubts here:

Could you guys check the scene after the first explosion (around 7 minutes). They do a loss count but the sum doesn't add up: 63+195 does not equal 242, unless I'm misunderstanding what they're saying.

"That accident over in Red Sector L destroyed another 63 personnel... giving them a total of 242 lost to our 195." Which means that the accident that just happened added to their total death count, 195 is where THX work, another section from Red Sector L.

Then, just at the end of thx's shift, they say that a libido-leveller has been lost near the pulse-buffering gate. What could a pulse-buffering gate be?

In the mall there are also "visual binaries" which can "previse" and improve your reading. What the hell is that?

I guess we'll never find out, a gate with pulse-buffering...

"visual binaries" could be many things, "previse" - to know in advance; foresee.

When he says to OMM that he "slipped on a thermal transfer this morning" does it mean he made a mistake during one of the robot building procedures? That's how I always understood it.

Yes.

"units of detuned escalatories have not, however, prevented virus and ordnance from invading our centers." Any thoughts on this? What image you picture in your mind when you hear of detuned escalatories not preventing virus and ordnance from invading our centers?

I know a lot of this stuff means nothing but I would like to render the same mental image. Afterall, adapting is part of the translation process. I'm also using my Italian version of THX novelization as reference for some words (like birthborns) so that there will be actually a connection between film and novelization. Sorry if I bother you with details that I perfectly understand if for most of the English-speaking people will be uninteresting. The same care was however given to the Italian-to-English subtitles.

How does the official translation treat these lines? You could just make things easy and take the existing official Italian translation on the DVD for the lines that appear in the original film, which is about 95%. Or were those subs made from the Italian dub?

STAR WARS - Special Widescreen Edition (Technidisc) (Released)

Thanks for all the kind feedback I got for this one and to everyone who help seed it, I'm unfortunately not able to do so any longer as I lost this in a HD crash.  As a perfectionist and obsessive freak of Star Wars I could never enjoy it and watch it myself for what it is, as I only see the problem with it:

This is representative of how bad the LD look sometimes, but I want to color correct it, I will fix the colors on a new one or Chewtobacca or Mallwalker or Lucas or...

thxita, that particular line is stolen from the 2004 DVD subs, to me it actually sounds like the audio is cut off on call 348 five, but the DVD subs had it FUN, it's your choice.

For example I just read that the "are you now or have you ever been?" line was from MacCarthy period when they usd to ask "are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?".

Yeah, Murch or Lucas talk about it in the audio commentary IIRC.

It's Official: George Lucas hates his fans :P
Time

It's amazing that there's still some idiots after 15 years of film enthusiasts and old Star Wars fans trying to explain the situation calmly, burp "he released the original films on DVD and you're still complaining". No, he included the 1993 videorelease as a bonus feature, something every Star Wars fan had already bought when it was released 13 years earlier, even if I was only seven years old, I would understand the issue, do these people think that some kind of magic was involved for the '97 re-issue. I wonder if they even know what restore means.

Sorry for the lack of updates on this never ending project, I was very close to lose everything I had done on this recently due to a HD-crash, (very scary as I didn't have a backup at that point due to my earlier computer issues) thankfully, I was able to rescue everything. My luck continues...

thxita, if you want you can start doing the Italian subs in the form of an srt-file against my English file I sent you way back, if you still have it, the timings are wrong in that one, but it's all the subs for the restored cut and we can take care of the timings later.

Question for people who own the 1984 VHS releases

Those are great, thanks. It is too bad that half-sheet wasn't scanned in at a higher quality because it is the perfect format, i.e., no text/logos and no creases. Unfortunately, the artwork area of it is only 114 mm wide @ 300 DPI, and it needs to be at least 129.5 mm wide. Setting it to 129.5 mm wide brings the DPI down to 265, which isn't terrible, but it is also lacking the fine detail that the other scans in your folder have. I think I'll see what I can do with the one labeled "Style B". That one is beautiful; the best I've seen so far.

You're welcome. The one labeled Style B is the regular US One Sheet, the German poster display most of the artwork, as you can see on the sides, especially on the left but the Australian have little more info at the top. I think you can make a good one out of these with a little photoshopping. Good luck!

Question for people who own the 1984 VHS releases

Ok, the good news is that I actually had quite a few Jedi style B scans, and that the Australian and German versions display a lot more of the artwork compared to the US version. The bad news is that all of them have the "larger Lando artwork", now when I think about it, I'm pretty sure I have seen a third variation of this artwork. Anyway, the Jedi logo cover parts of Leia's body in every version except the US half sheet, but that one is unfortunately not in that good quality.

They're all in bmp-format and need some color correction, the Australian posters have fold marks but is otherwise pretty nice looking. Hope these help.

LexX, I thought I didn't but I recently discovered a bunch of posters scans on another HD of mine, and there are a couple of Jedi posters in there, that One Sheet is one of them.

MaximRecoil, I checked the VHS cover you're trying to emulate and it uses what I believe is the original artwork, if you look close at those pics in post 32 you'll see that Lando and the details around him is slightly different than on the VHS artwork, that's because the poster was updated shortly after to not make Lando appear so small compared to the other stars, and I actually don't know if either version of that poster displays the artwork without the logo covering parts of Leias body, I'll have to check what I have and what version... I'll post them here for you as soon as possible.

Lucas' Red Tails

“On the Internet, all those same guys that are complaining I made a change are completely changing the movie,” Lucas says, referring to fans who, like the dreaded studios, have done their own forcible re-edits.

Yeah, it's ironic isn't it? but you brought this on yourself.

“I’m saying: ‘Fine. But my movie, with my name on it, that says I did it, needs to be the way I want it.’ ”

It doesn't matter when it says Directed by Irvin Kershner and Richard Marquand on your fan-edits.

STAR WARS - Special Widescreen Edition (Technidisc) (Released)

Makes one wonder why they didn't use the SWE or JSC masters for the GOUT DVDs instead.

Yeah, but not everyone thinks the THX versions are lesser versions, at the time of their release they were seen by many as the best the films had ever looked on video, most people prefer them to the older releases. I liked many aspects of that release as well, the audio is definitely the best part on those releases IMO.

If the older masters had been used instead, if they even exist(ed), people would've complained anyway as one of the most popular and influental films of all time deserved better than being presented as bonus material to the bastard child in that case, and sourced from a 15 or 20 year old LD-master. Not even cheap pornos are treated like this.

First of all, I really enjoyed this capture! :) Do you have any clue if there exists DVNR-free LD's for the sequels as well? Saw something mentioned about Empire somewhere in this thread?

Yes, as far as I know every SW-LD released before 1993 was devoid of any DVNR, the US SWE LD's (Special Widescreen Edition) and the Japanese equivalents, the Special Collection, was the first and last quality release of the films in their original widescreen aspect ratio before the DVNR, before the dark times.  ;)

To make a hybrid is not a bad idea but I'm doubtful it's really going to work, the Technidisc transfer is quite soft looking compared to the JSC, and I'm unfortunately not able to make a capture to match this quality with my gears, the transitions between them would be too jarring. I'm definitely not against it but maybe Mallwalker is able to provide a much better capture than me?
