Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)

I fully respect what you are doing and are interested to hear the results even though I like how the music was used and not used for the most part in this film. IMO the absence of music when Slave I leave bespin is brilliant, I also love the heavy pianos in the beginning of the "Imperial Walkers" but in the film I think it's more effective to just hear the heavy foot steps of the AT-AT's. But I'm torn about the tracked "Hyperspace" cue on Hoth, what do you guys think? just curious.

About the yellow color, I'm not entirely sure but I think he had the hue tweaked -7 before and in his current script it is at -3, for you curious people.

Sorry for my above comment, I got that wrong. It was Moth3r's pwnage script that had the hue tweaked -6.25 towards yellow, I don't know what g-force old scripts used.

 Mmmhh... I don't have EQ's.

Maybe I formulated myself badly, I didn't mean that you have to own your own studio with parametric EQ. Most modern receivers today can make the audio from records suited to your own listening enviroment. Some EQ is always needed of course, I just think the final touches should be made by yourself on your own system instead of the music industry doing it for you in the re-mastering process by limiting and altering the material by trying to found a good middle ground for the average lazy listener who don't even care to turn the treble or bass knob...

I just tried out g-force latest script and it really is a huge improvement since my last encode of his, I really don't think he can improve it much more, I think what he have done to this shitty transfer is absolutely amazing. Thank you g-force! even though it's in the wrong thread ;)

About the yellow color, I'm not entirely sure but I think he had the hue tweaked -7 before and in his current script it is at -3, for you curious people.

d_j, I love what you're doing here! keep up the good work and let's give each other a big hug!

The shots would never match just by editing them together, way too soft and noisy...

No they wouldn't match easily, they also have different framing but I really think you could get some good results if you match the overall colors and contrast/sharpness of the Gout picture, the result would by no means be seamless but I think I would prefer it over the horrible smear that takes you out of the film every time you watch it.

Sad but true... but this seems to be the only option available to fully fix these films without having actual prints scanned, I also think some scenes from the broadcasted '97SE could be very helpful. It's stupid really, that I'm finding myself dreaming of seeing these films without disturbing videoflaws in no higher than pity LD resolution, but that's because I love these films so much I guess. IMO the '04 transfers should be avoided like plague, I'm really impressed what Adywan has manage to do with the colors in his reconstruction but to me the footage still look horrible for the most part no matter what you do.

Anyway, this set would be wonderful to have just on its own. I really hope you finish it someday.

Midna rules, doesn't she?  Kind of like a Zelda version of Mara Jade, I suppose you could say.  Rather a shock when she suddenly goes from cute-but-sinister demon/imp thing into full blown babe.  ;)  Poor Link, though, left holding the dust because she just had to be noble and break that damned mirror . . .

:) Yes, she does. Beautiful ending! I'm actually a huge Zelda fan since 1986 ;) and even though I was a little dissapointed with that game, I must say that she is one of the best characters Nintendo has ever produced.

Sorry about the unrelated post.

He has taken down the yellow a few steps since the last script and I think he has found a great overall color balance this time, I really think the pink tint on these transfers is a little bit overexaggerated, the only scenes that I think would need a little extra yellow boost is the binary sunset and maybe R2 in the canyon scenes.

Yes, there is some edge enhancement on this transfer and some very bad color timing but when I'm looking at the caps on the first page, most color problems seems to have been solved with the help of g-force's script. I'm very interested to see the improvements over the V8 and also to see a smear-free Empire preserved which I've never seen in widescreen format before.

There's a reason EQ is available on most receivers, that is what is great about Hoffman's approach to audio recordings, preserve what is there and let your audio system do the work for you, not the other way around just because many people have bad listening conditions available. The only thing such great mastering jobs need from you is that you fiddle a little on your own system.

I just got feedback from msycamore on my hopefully final version of the '80 Theatrical stereo mix, and he found nothing wrong, not even the screw up I did at the carbon freeze chamber, to be honest I fixed all that was mentioned and while going through the file I found some myself that you guys didn't even hear...

I did notice the screwup in the carbon freeze when I listened to the first audio file a second time after hairy_hen pointed it out. But as I said in my earlier feedback it was now corrected, but I have now listened to the whole second attempt and didn't find any errors in it, but there may still be errors in it of course ;) Anyway, it is great that this track will finally be available, both by d_j and h_hen. Thanks!

Love your stories guys, plaster falling from the cieling! :) ABC, Robocop was indeed one of the first if not the first film with the then new Dolby Stereo Spectral Recording maybe that's one of the reasons why you were impressed, I believe the latest R1 DVD include the original 4.0 mix but maybe you saw a french dub when I think about it.

I must ask a question regarding the Academy Mono track for Star Wars, what was the most common speaker configuration for that track in the cinema, was it played through only one single speaker or several ones? Also what is your prefered way when doing your own encode of the fan restored track, dual 2.0 mono or 1.0 mono? I'm curious.

Now as a last note about this, an isolated score on a film may be interesting. However I'd find more interesting a fully musical presentation: the complete score, with all the sequences that fit re-edited as video clips... Like the "Star Wars Musical Journey" if you want, but with the exact scenes that the score means to accompany (what would allow to replace the few missing sequences).

... And a bitrate at 1411kbps would be the best :) The idea would almost deserve a topic.

I think this is a great idea. I'd love to see and hear such a disc, wasn't that one of Seventiesfilmnut suggestions with his LP rips in the beginning or was that with McQuarrie art, I don't remember. Anyway, I think you should do it. ;)

Ok, I double checked my sub script one last time before dark_jedi went to use it in his custom DVD, to see if I could improve the positioning and drop shadow without taking the TV-overscan into consideration this time but IMO. it was already perfect in positioning. And I also dare to say it will be just inside the safe area of older CRT TV's. So I won't do a second script. I want to improve it overall though with the suggested grainstructure for example but I just need a break from this damn subs for the moment, so if anyone feel they can do them better, please feel free to steal my work and improve them, I won't do anything more to it, at least for a while.
