Star Wars OT & 1997 Special Edition - Various Projects Info (Released)
Time

Yes, g-force's script have a slight hue tweak towards yellow, to eliminate the red/magenta shift in the GOUT video.

I agree with zombie's article that the technicolor print is the best reference there is, when the creator of the film has gone mad, (is Gil Taylor still alive?) but not the photos of it, even though they show the overall look, they can not be taken as gospel, if so R2 should also have a green tint, Mark Hamill's and Harrison's hair should also have a green tint.

Ok, I recently sent these clips to Harmy as he wanted to use my Jedi subs as base for his project so I figured I could as well post them here as a preview of how they'll look on dark_jedi's GOUT v.3 disc.

It's all sub-scenes in the film except one, which I'm still in doubt of how it's supposed to be presented. I'll post the Jedi script as soon as it is finished.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available] (Released)
Time

I just listened to your job on the Empire 2.0 audio, flawless editing work as usual. Thank you!! :)

Snowspeeder crash audio restored, two glitches in the '93 PCM repaired and the Departure of Boba Fett like how it's edited in the '97- mix, perfectly done! even though I'm fond of the slightly clunky "original Departure."

Making of Empire Strikes Back pushed back to October.

Yeah, it looks like it. The last book had also a few SE pictures in it. This book also have comments from George Lucas in it that's taken from the doc "From Star Wars to Jedi" which makes me a little worried how time accurate it will be in the documentation of the film. But I guess we were very lucky to have the Lippincott interviews in the first book.

Damn! I want my filthy hands on that book... almost a month left.

THX 1138 "preservations" + the 'THX 1138 Italian Cut' project (Released)
Time

Hey, Silverwook, I just checked my PAL VHS and the dirt is there, I also checked that comparison page again, and you can see that the white speck is present on those caps as well if you look close enough, it's just a little harder to notice it as that transfer is more heavily cropped.

So... if not the Japanese transfer is from a different master, I guess we'll have to live with that dirt in frame unfortunately. I don't know how distracting it will be on modern displays but I would prefer to leave it than to have the picture information cropped out. I think I can live with it, it's the original cut of the film after all. :)

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes
Time

I think you can change the description to this comparison.

The original opening crawl had the text on 21 lines, so to still keep it as 21 lines when adding two new lines (Episode IV, A NEW HOPE) they simply changed the spacing of the words in the first two paragraphs of the text. That's my theory, but they still didn't get the timing exactly right as the music is now slightly out of sync with the reveal of Tatooine.

Secondly, the capitalization of "Rebel" was not done to match the first (the first Rebel starts a sentence, that's why it has a capital "R") I think it was done to match how it now was written in Empire, I also think they capitalized rebel when they revised the script to ANH in '79.

Good job doubleofive with all the comparison caps.

It is the '97 SE opening crawl that introduced the faster receding logo not the '81 crawl, the '97 and '04 is exactly the same opening crawl as far as I can see. I don't see any tweaking done between them.

doubleofive, you haven't listed the '81 opening starfield difference, remember that the whole opening is unique to that version. Also the different '97 A long time ago... text is different from the '04 version.

The clouds were added to the binary sunset in '04 not '97 and the landscape in the close-up of the suns were removed in '04.

EDIT: you could maybe list the '97 binary sunset as altered also, but I think that is just a colortiming difference, so if you include that, the list will grow considerable. You have a pic of the '97 sunset if you follow the link or should I say moonset. ;)

Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)
Time

About Obi-Wan's roar, when I was young I always thought that it was the scream of the Sandpeople who got scared off by Obi-Wan's presence. ;)

I know there has been silly EU explanations of this beeing Ben imitating a Crayt Dragon or something but in the original sound-mix they actually used the same sound effect they used for the Dewback earlier in the film, so maybe that's why they opted to change it. Nevertheless, the new sound effect sounds terrible as the rest of the audio mix.

I found this info in an old SW magazine:

"In Lucas' early draft, the Jedi Knights let out an ear-piercing scream just before they attacked. This idea survived in the call that heralds the arrival of Obi-Wan."

Can someone confirm if this info is true? I haven't read the earlier drafts in a long time, and I cannot remember that part.

Going through the changes as I have all of the caps done.

Question: The "EPISODE IV" title was added in 1981. But when did all of the reformatting happen so that they capitalized "Rebel" and so forth? The "official" comparison text says 1979. How many crawls are there?

Yeah, I noticed that, it's a little weird but if I understand it correctly, Episode IV appeared on the revised script in '79 so maybe that's what they mean or maybe the '81 opening crawl was created already in '79 but not spliced in to the actual film until '81.

So, the mono screenings of ESB and ROTJ were just the same 35mm stereo print with the theatres sound equipment playing it back through a single channel? That seems a bit odd, at least for ESB. Mono was so common back then, you'd think they would want to make sure it had been mixed specially for that format to make sure the levels were better suited to a single channel.

That's how I understand it, I have never heard or read that they did an exclusive Mono mix created for Empire or Jedi. I may be wrong though, you guys makes me doubt it a little but I'm pretty sure the Academy mono track was something uniquely done for SW, otherwise I think you would've heard about it by now. I don't know, perhaps they did it for foreign markets where Dolby hadn't widely been adapted yet. Remember that after Star Wars and before Empire several films helped to make the Dolby sound in cinema huge, Superman, Apocalypse Now and Alien to name a few.

Besides the altered colors and the new Fox logo I believe it had two brief altered scenes with the ship Nostromo, where in the original film there was just a black background, it now has a added star field. It has been a while since I last watched that disc, but I'm almost sure that little alteration made its way into the original cut on the Quadrilogy disc.

Dark_Jedi &amp; ABC's - ESB: <em>IMPERIAL EDITION</em> - ART OF SCORING, <em>Restored Recordings against the B&amp;W GOUT</em> - JW &amp; LSO (Released)
Time

I have finally seen & heard this little unique project of yours, and I must say I was a little surprised of how much I enjoyed it. I'm no fan of isolated scores in general, but this wasn't exactly like that anyway. To have the footage in black and white gave me old WWII documentary vibes from time to time as the films themselves flirts with it from time to time.

I've always thought that the Empire score works in two distinctive ways, (as so many great scores does of course) but this works perfectly in the finished film imo. (and I would not like the edited music back if I could choose as I think Empire has almost wall to wall scoring as it is already) and it also works perfectly as an alternative standalone listening experience outside the film as there is so much music that was edited out etc, but I've now actually found a third way to enjoy it. :)

Well done, ABC/dark_jedi!!

Satanika reports that he has obtained the files I sent him and that the ESB 5.1 should be ready soon.  So, yay.  :)  Once I have it I'll test it out to make sure everything is as it should be and then it will be available.  I'm quite pleased with the way this turned out, although I wish I'd been able to finish it faster.

Are you also going to make a 2.0 pcm version available of this? I would really like it.

Glad I got my 1997 DVD when it was first released.  It's interesting how many movies have been misrepresented from their theatrical releases - all in the name of marketing and technology-testing.

At this point, I'm going to always go to screen capture comparison sites prior to making any new purchases. Fortunately, I already have most everything I'm interested in watching.  With current and future films, my only choice may be  buy or not buy.  At least with films from the 60s, 70s, and 80s I can buy early DVDs that hadn't been improved yet. Same with over-compressed music CDs and the loudness wars.

Might be time for me to start hitting ebay & Amazon for extra copies of the ones I'm happy with.

Yeah, I'm also glad I still have that disc even though it has a crude transfer. Some day I would really like to attempt a "color correction" to the new transfer with that as an overall reference.

I agree, I'm very suspicious nowadays when it comes to new releases, image comparisons can be a little misleading sometimes but in this case with Bladerunner it sure isn't. But I guess this is small problems when you're starting to look at another franchise created by that bearded man from Modesto. ;)

Yes, that is what I meant. As I have understand it, the new set will also be seamlessly branched so you'll also have the new colortiming on the original cut unfortunately. You can clearly identify the DC- look of the transfer in the blown out whites in "the wake up scene." I'd like to have them separated from each other to avoid these sort of problems, in the last DVD release some Director's Cut altered footage crept in to the original cut, one of the reason I still hold on to my 20th anniversary DVD.

But I'm really looking forward to the audio tracks, it's rumored that both the original theatrical mixes are going to be available on Alien & Aliens, 35mm Dolby stereo in 2.0 surround and the 70mm six-track stereo in 4.1 surround. :) I hope it's true.
