...the droids in the PT era are top of the range and brand new.

The jets are narratively functional.

Who says they're brand new? The galaxy (and the civilization within it) didn't just pop into existence immediately after the opening crawl. Things have been rolling for quite some time and as such there should be aspects of the universe that show wear and tear. Perhaps as a repair droid on a royal ship R2 SHOULD look clean and new......but I definitely disagree when you say that jets on R2 function on a narrative level. R2 rolls around, and apparently has a magnetic function to stick to the outside of a moving spacecraft (a "new" ability shown for the first time in the PT that I DON'T have a problem with)......he also has extendable arms with tools on them to get into tight spaces and accomplish tasks ordinary humans couldn't. I'd say he has more than enough mobilty as it is without making him fly on top of everything else he can do. As a narrative device R2's jets fail completely in my opinion as they make the character less interesting.....we worry less about how he will get out of a jam, therefore we care less overall. I'm not saying the jets aren't a logical thing to have on a droid of his type.....but the secret to writing a good character is to write him/her as you want, then remove some aspects in order to create a conflict or a goal for the individual.....making them too perfect makes them boring. There SHOULD be things R2 cannot do.....flying, in my opinion, is definitely one of them.

THANK YOU!

It's why there is kryptonite in Superman.

Getting back to the scene, when R2 pushes 3P0 off the barge & jumps also, he does this knowing that he is part of the team, that he depends on others, like they depend on him, he takes that leap knowing that he won't be left behind, besides Luke already used a trick to survive when he walked the plank.

I hear what you're saying. But mostly, I'm crying because of your avatar. =(

And thats where I disagree with the whole argument of PT R2 vs OT R2.....things were clunkier, and more archaic in the OT....everything was made too slick and perfect in the PT, including R2. You want your characters to have limitations....that way you feel genuine suspense when they're in danger....or possibly about to fail at something they're trying to accomplish. The PT had no such suspense because of how they would just switch to CG anytime they couldn't accomplish something with a physical droid. Instead of having the same limitations that the real R2 units had in '76, '79, and '82 they were now able to have the droids do ANYTHING. If AOTC had been made 30 years ago R2 would have turned around, gone back the way he came, and found an alternate route to where he was trying to get to....OR alternatively he would have found a port, plugged in and saved the day that way....from a distance (the same way he shuts down the garbage compactor in ANH).......in the PT he's got a tool for literally EVERY possible situation and therefore has far more confidence than he does in the OT. So the character IS changed and definitely FEELS different.

My thoughts exactly:

BEN : Anakin was a good friend.

LUKE : I accept the truth you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father.

It's all made clear in the end.

Beside do we even need to name this pupil in the PT?

When Ben talks about a former pupil of his that turns to evil, the assumption will be made by some that he is talking about the guy who turned to evil in the PT. Therefore he must have been called Anakin (sit on the Skywalker bit for a few films) back then and adopted the title of Darth Vader.

Therefore he was the one who betrayed and murdered Luke's father, Sir Skywalker (the guy who isn't Anakin).

If you have to give the other guy a name, why not call him Luke?

That way people will assume Luke Skywalker is named after his father and not after the friend of his father who is later betrayed and murdered by him.

This would work IF the films were re-shot. Pretty sure it couldn't happen with the footage/resources available.

First let me say that I am all in favor of seeing this done. While I generally am betting that it can't be done and generally think that it doesn't need to be done, Id like to see it. Its been part of the biggest debate there is surround the prequels, so Im absolutely excited to see someone try it. And I'd be first in line to eat some mynock and admit Im wrong if it works.

A couple of things. Drax is right that the it is INTENDED to be watch by the numbers. But wrong when saying it doesnt work. It does WORK, but it changes something that you and a ton of other people, myself included, love. If I say it doesn't work for you, thats not a blow-off. It matters. But it does work for me. I find the saga much more interesting this way if perhaps less "cool" in certain aspects.

What Lucas did is brilliant. And this discussion is an example of that brilliance, even though most people think this debate is an example of his stupidity. He did something thats never been done, or even tried. He crafted these three films to take place before the existing films in such a way that they function properly when watched in the new order but that are also satisfying to those whod already seen the others. So the debate 1-6 or OT-PT is a cool one that can truly be done either way.

Lucas made the right choice in not trying to protect that surprise because I don't think it was protectable at all. Not only do I think there is no way to edit the films in a way that protects the surprise. I don't think there was a way to write them and produce them from scratch that would have protected it. Not without making the whole thing suck.

Ask yourself honestly. Do you think you personally wouldn't figure it out? Is there any version of 3 prequel movies that legitimately show Anakin's backstory and the fall of the Jedi/Rise of Empire where YOU personally wouldn't figure it out in A New Hope? Aren't we all a little too sophisticated for that?

You may be right, but I'm not sure. However, even if you are, I would rather figure it out than it be spelled out to me. I hate when movies pretend the audience is stupid and has to be handed all the information.

I've contemplated a hyrbid SW saga. The number sequence would change, and in the prequel instances those films could be combined to keep those needed elements while having enough film to not sacrifice run-time.

We don't need 3 films, we don't need 6 films. We need just enough to accomplish the right story. We don't need to be caught up in our trilogies. Harry Potter managed to resist the  trilogy mold, why can't Star Wars?

What we should ask if if there is a new version ROTJ in your future?

?

I've completed a hybrid version of ROTJ and it's available online. I will not be revisiting it in the future.

You know what. That's my fault. I have all these fanedits in my head I sometimes forget who's done what. I forgot about your Jedi edit, and I apologize. =/

Serioudly, I've talked about this before. I don't think preserving the secret makes the films stronger at all. Quite the opposite.

A) Name one cool story point from the PT worth fretting over losing. If you are saying Palpatine being behind both armies I'm with you, other than that it's an unassembled bucket of bolts (and we know how good a well assembled bucket of bolts can be).

B) How many versions of the PT have you seen that do maintain the secrets of the OT? How many versions that don't actually work?

There's nothing to lose and everything to gain with the PT.

Make them Episodes One to Three and not the Prequels and they may just be salvaged.

True. In fact, if we lost the films completely it would be no loss at all.

... Leave Anakin to die on Mustafar.

Padme's funeral.

Yoda goes to Dagobah.

Emperor/Vader/Tarkin looking at the death star (change that to be Coruscant or something else)

Roll credits.

We lose... NOOOOOOO! and the scenes with the twins. Secret, for the most part, preserved. Where's the cool stuff?

Not showing that Anakin lives, and showing Vader at the end even adds to the deception.

ABSOLUTELY THIS.

I too would like to know what "cool" stuff we would miss. However, if I lose cool in favor of substance, I'm going to choose substance every time.

Because a blank normal looking forehead, while technically consistant, doesn't do much for ADDING continuity. It just removes a very very minor difference.

Adding moles to Alec Guiness however does the opposit. There is something particular to notice that automatically calls back to the other one.

I understand that the attitude around here is very OT Now OT Forever! I don't think a blanket rule of change the PT to fit the OT is necessarily smart. Regardless of what you'd like, you only have so much to work with.

It can be your guiding principle in general, but you really need to be making whatever changes you feel you need, on either side to make the best possible version.

I'm not sold on the whole preserving surprises. I get why you want it, but I think 1, its impossible and 2 you are shortchanging the reverse viewings of those surprises. I am your father is still in the movie. Its just different. Now its, the audience knows, but Luke does not. And that isn't nothing. Its a very powerful scene when view from that *ahem* point of view. Im not saying its AS good, but its got its own merits.

Ask yourself. Has knowing Vader is Luke's father diminished the scene all these years since you first saw it? Don't you still watch Luke closely for his reaction to the truth?

Assuming that a new viewer has no idea about Darth Vader and Luke. I think its interesting to be in on the lie that Obi-Wan tells. And then to hear Vader say Obi-Wan never told you etc. He told me enough, he told me you killed him.

All of that is fascinating Id say to a first timer. I can imagine being on the edge of my seat waiting to see if Vader is going to drop the bomb on Luke and how Luke will react.

You trade in some twist shock (which I think is a bit overrated) and gain a little suspense.

Not saying its better or AS good, but it doesn't suck.

This is a valid argument, and I've even seen that it's true for SW newbies. However, as you said it's probably not a better situation (even if isn't bad) and if we can preserve the surprise (and I think it can be done) why not do it? If you have the opportunity to make it stronger, then make it stronger.

It's only three years later than expected, no biggy really.

Good golly. That seems a bit snippy.

If you're joking I rescind my comment... But, really when joking it helps to have a signature Frink ;) smile. Of course, you have to pay him a quarter when you do it. (Doh!)

If I was being totally serious that would mean it's no biggy really.

Which is exactly what I said so if I'm joking and need to put the winky in it's a biggy which would be a bit snippy.

Which is what you said without a winky.

I'll thank you to stop discussing my winky, sir. =)

Or your lack of a winky....

Well played. But to put all doubts to rest; my wife is expecting again and due in June. So.... I can say, well done, winky.... Well done indeed. =)

Honestly, all this talk about ship designs is for me a background issue. The screenplay is broken. If the story had been amazing and the characters had been as engaging as they were in OT, then honestly we may have been more forgiving of these ship designs, because holy crap that was a great story.

If the story had sucked in ESB, I would have complained about how stupid of a design the ATAT's were. I mean who creates tanks on legs that can easily be tripped? Not to mention that when they are in this "tripped" state their armor is no longer too strong for blasters and can be blown to bits.

Fix the story, then a lot is forgivable.
