4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I'm assuming they just didn't care, and given how altered the colors were and how disorganized working for Lucas supposedly was, I believe that it's very possible that some people may not have even been sure what was and wasn't meant to look a certain way.

I'm not sure about the errors. They very well could've been creative choices because as we've seen with the SE's, George's creative decision-making process is flawed to say the least. As for them being fixed in the blu ray, Lucas has been known to make changes to the movies, and then go back in and change the changes either back to the way they were, or alter them further.

I'm not trying to defend the color job on the DVD's just because I know an acquaintance who worked on them. I think the deal was that he worked in a horribly frustrating environment with a man who was completely passionless, but still obnoxiously stubborn, about everything related to the movie he was selling, but I think it had more to do with Lucas' bad ideas than anything else. It's been so long since this conversation, but I think he said something along the lines of, "Lucas got what he wanted," regarding the colors, and maybe that's just a big cop out, but knowing how ridiculous everything related to Star Wars has been since 1997 I'm completely willing to believe it.

Complete Comparison of Special Edition Visual Changes

I believe that in SW Tarkin's little metal silver things in his pockets next to his badge used to move position in each shot. I think they "fixed" this in the SE, sorry but I don't have access to the blu ray, or even the DVD for that matter, so I can't check, and I'm not about to dig out my SE VHS tapes :) Seriously though I'm positive that this happened in one or more of the Tarkin scenes. I'm really sorry to be so vague but I really do think it's there.

I thought the 2004 version actually wasn't a rushed project but just lazily done?

It may have been a lazy job as well. The person I know said he tried to make it work but there were a lot of difficulties and George had no clue what he was doing and ruined all the colors. I'm paraphrasing ;) he's much too professional to say something that harsh. It's also possible that he was one of the only ones putting any effort into the project. I do think that there had to have been a lot of laziness to allow such blatant errors in a DVD release. Especially one as big as Star Wars. The green lightsaber stands out a lot but there are many other ones too.

I should also add that I haven't seen the DVD's in what, 10 years now? I don't have a good memory about some of the coloring issues, and looking at Hayden Christiansen's ghost makes me physically ill, so it's been a long time since I've even watched any of the butchered versions. I think it was that change that completely turned me off of the Special Editions forever.

I love the disappearing TIE fighters, when we watch in a group someone always points this out just before the scene change.  We have done this as far back as I can remember.

Yes absolutely, I can't wait to see them disappear again in V2.0 of Jedi

EDIT: Something else I was wondering was how did you get rid of the blinking Ewoks? I've never seen the blu ray so I don't know how often they blinked or how consistent the blinking change was, but did you just use the HDTV '04 version for all of the Ewok scenes?

Didn't I just say, that the sabers in the ESB duel weren't redone in the SE? They just screwed up the colors.

To be fair, it should be he screwed up the colors. I actually know someone who worked on the Star Wars Trilogy in 2004 and worked on the colors for SW specifically (which in my opinion has the worst colors of the three) and he said that the mucked up colors were all George's idea. He said at one point he actually got into a bit of an argument with George when Lucas kept insisting that the Jawa Sandcrawler scene had to be extra dark. So it really isn't the colorists' fault, and the colors were in fact intentionally ruined by Lucas.

Something I noticed in version 1.0 of Jedi is that around 37:02 into the movie the first group of 4 TIE fighters that come from behind the camera are supposed to vanish about 1 second before the scene cuts to the Emperor's shuttle landing in the hangar. This is how it was in the unaltered version, and I'm not sure if this is a change that too many people are aware of, but I noticed it when I was young and always pointed it out so I was rather devastated when they "fixed" it in the SE. Sorry to keep bumping this thread with questions and observations, but I've always been rather fascinated by Jedi since I love it so much. I've probably seen it more than the other two (except for Wars maybe) even though it's by far the worst of the three in my opinion.

IP scan is the only way to be sure all the wipe-cuts will be correct.

I would personally prefer a scan of a well-preserved IP to any reconstruction of the O-neg.

Agreed. Same here.

I think that's likely what they'll do. There's so many things that could go wrong with restoring the negative, especially since if it's true what they said and the negatives were hacked up to be conformed to the SE, then so many tiny frames would've been removed. Even just little things like censoring the bullet impacts on the Death Star etc. etc.

I know on their video we noticed that the lightsabers looked 04-ish in the Star Wars clip, but what about this picture from Empire? Are these the original lightsabers? I believe they were redone on the blu ray, but I don't own it so I can't check.

On their website at the top several images cycle through and one is of Luke and Vader in their Bespin duel.

**RUMOR** Original theatrical cut of the OT to be released on blu ray!!
Time

Short Round said:

Hey guys, several weeks ago I sent an email to Walt Disney Studios asking about Star Wars (not sure why, I didn't really expect an answer, but was curious what they'd say), and just today they responded to it. It took me a while to remember because I'd forgotten I'd even emailed them. Anyway, I don't have my original email anymore since it's been so long, but it was basically just asking if there was going to be a re-release for the OUT. They sent back a really strange email that said that Star Wars was not a Walt Disney Home Entertainment production and gave me a huge, and bizarre, list of other places to contact including Dreamworks, Paramount, New Line Cinema, and Fox. I know that the Star Wars Trilogy in fact isn't a Home Entertainment product of Disney's, but I remember someone else on the forum (probably in the 4K thread) posted their response and it said that Disney hadn't set a re-release date, and that the OUT was unavailable currently. Anyway, I just thought that was strange so I supposed I'd post it here.

First, I have no idea why they changed their message from, "it's currently unavailable" to the new one they sent you, but I wouldn't worry about this. I'm 99% sure you probably sent some kind of title request to Disney Home Entertainment (since they responded about it), but they have no control over what is going on with Star Wars. They're purpose is to package, sell, and advertise DVD's and Blu Rays, as well as probably digital home entertainment, and they won't be doing that with Star Wars unless Disney buys the distribution rights, but I think they're much more likely to just continue with the Fox distribution deal for now, at least until 2020. Second, this does not mean that Disney isn't going to be involved in a Lucasfilm restoration of the OT because they'd likely be funding it since they own and receive profits from Lucasfilm, but Disney Home Entertainment won't be involved since they won't be the ones distributing the discs. The better people to contact would be Lucasfilm or maybe another branch of Disney, but not their Home Entertainment section.

This is possibly the most minor change of all, but since it was an SE change it must be fixed! I noticed that in the GOUT there is a large mark on the floor (and more smaller ones) near Leia's feet, and it's gone in the SE.

I couldn't post the image here, so I posted the link.

Wasn't this thread about the rumoured Bluray release of the OT?

It was :-) but between this and the 4K thread we've almost discussed it as much as possible. At this point we just have to wait for more info. I guess my question still stands though, is comicbook.com reliable? I'd never heard of it but apparently it's pretty well known. Basically, does anyone here trust that site in a way that if they say they have reliable sources, you believe them? Just wondering since comicbook.com doesn't even say it's a rumor, they state so clearly that the OUT is being released that there's no way it's a misunderstanding. They either made it up completely, or they have real information.

I typed brachiosaurus and my spell-check uderlined it and offered brontosaurus as an alternative - true story.

@moviefreakedmind: I don't know - I didn't like the Tim Burton remake but I thought the apes (played by people in masks) looked frickin' awesome.

I agree that the makeup and costumes were well done. I was just trying to say that as of now it's very difficult to get real looking apes, so it's more a matter of personal preference. I thought the new apes looked great when they were on there own, it was just when they were alongside people that they looked phony. I was so into what was happening in the movie that I forgave some of the questionable CGI though. I'm pretty forgiving with such things, unless they're just lazy or needlessly cheap.
