4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Well, that's probably a movie that'll never enter public domain since there's so much money to be made off of it. I also don't understand the distribution rights issue. That Badass Digest article that claimed Fox outright owned the whole Original Trilogy said it was a fake rumor because Fox would be the one to release it, which makes no sense. When it was announced that the whole Saga was coming to blu ray in 2011 (or whenever) no one said, "George Lucas actually can't release those, Fox has the distribution rights," it's just nonsensical. I still am betting $100 on the fact that we'll get the OOT in some form (even if it's a GOUT repeat, which I doubt it will be) by the end of 2015

EDIT: I should add that I do understand that Fox has a role to play here. Either Disney buys the distribution rights, or they just let Fox distribute whatever Lucasfilm puts together. Or make a new agreement altogether, but by no means is this something that'll prevent Star Wars from ever being released again.

Disney's attitude towards fan edits / restorations?
Time

For OOT reconstructions/upscales like Harmy or DarkJedi, it depends on what their plans are. If they are going to re-release the OOT then maybe they're waiting to see if that stops all these fan edits, and if their release isn't completely insulting like the GOUT, then it really should. If they have no plans to release the OOT then I think they would've shut it down by now. Given how little Lucas seemed to care about fan edits I think Disney will want to go about dealing with them as peacefully as possible, and releasing the OOT would get rid of the need for projects like the Despecialized Edition. As for things like Adywan, I don't think they care since most people who would watch those probably already love and have/would purchase the films anyway (I say "would" because they may be waiting for the OOT). I agree that they may not be so quiet about it when it comes to Ep. VII, but again, if they do a good job then there won't be a need for such big fan edits like there were for the prequels. As for prequel fan edits, I don't think they care at all since no one wants to buy the real movies anyway.

Phantom Menace Discussion: Is the Duel of the fates a classic match?
Time

Odd though this may sound, I think it would have worked better if you didn't have to cut between the three strands of plot in that part of the film. Duel of the Fates is meant to be really engaging, but I'm thrown off by the pacing of the cuts between it, the race to the throne room, and the space battle. Straight-up flair works best uninterrupted like that.

I like it but that's my one complaint.

I agree, the fight between Vader and Luke in Jedi was chopped up and it has always been really obnoxious to keep cutting back and forth between that, Ewoks, and Lando since in my opinion that duel is the most emotional one in the series. This problem obviously got much worse in the Phantom Menace, which deflated the excitement of the duel.

I just don't think they'd restore the OUT from the OCN, and honestly I'm not sure that I want them to. There's a lot that could go wrong in that situation. So many things were cut out or replaced in the "O"CN when they made the Special Editions that they could easily accidentally leave in a minor change from 1997. It'd be a huge and tedius project reassembling all of the deleted frames (which are all probably at different levels of deterioration) and putting them back into the movies at the right place.

The really big BIG news that you missed, was that there is an alleged rumor from a unknown source, that the OUT might someday be released on blu ray, or not, although that hasn't been confirmed.

And that we needed two 40-page threads about it.

One for each rumor/rumour. There were two separate ones after all.

Oh OK, thanks. I've never actually bothered with anything on the blu ray so I wasn't sure. I remember the "Anatomy of a Dewback" video actually making me physically ill when I saw part of it. I think around the time of the blu ray George must've really softened on the whole, "the original versions don't exist to me anymore," stance. Before he sold it he just said, "the movies keep getting upgraded over time" or something, but I was sure he'd get around to releasing the OUT eventually, even if it was as late as the 40th anniversary.

Does anyone know when the, "From Star Wars to Jedi," documentary was posted on the Star Wars youtube channel? It says it was "published" in 2014 but that never means when it was actually uploaded. Was this uploaded after Lucas left, or when he was still in charge? Either way it's interesting because it includes several in depth explanations of how OUT shots were made so I wouldn't expect GL to allow his staff to post it on youtube, but if it's been posted since he sold LFL then that means they're no longer going to pretend like Star Wars wasn't made until 1997, even if they don't release the originals.

EDIT: It's also interesting given that the documentary was not on the blu ray

Hey, I just noticed something fascinating. On the Star Wars youtube channel, there is a video about the history of lightsabers, and it was made in 2014. All of the clips of the New Hope duel are the original lightsabers, and I don't think one clip is shown of the 04 lightsabers. This is fascinating because it shows that Disney-owned Lucasfilm is not going to pretend that the originals don't exist. In most special features when Lucas was in charge they'd talk about the cantina and show footage of all of the dumb CGI aliens as if they were always there, but now they acknowledge that previous versions exist.

EDIT: Sorry, there is a clip of the shitty new Wampa scene, but still, the lightsabers were all the pre-2004 sabers for the Star Wars duel

I'm actually genuinely shocked that Lucas didn't replace Bossk with CGI. I love him, but his costume always did look pretty rubbery. I mean, if you're going to """modernize""" your movies (or whatever the hell he was doing), why replace perfectly good VFX shots with CGI, but not replace rubber lizard suits with CGI?It makes no sense.

Probably because it would be too difficult to do seamlessly. I'm sure it's crossed his mind, but the time and effort and money that would be required probably made him go "meh, I'm just glad I can make the Ewoks blink now."

I don't know though. All of the CG in the SE's range from, at best, out of place, to appallingly distracting. Also, George never even bothered to correct real errors, such as Luke's jump cut on the Death Star when the door closes. He didn't care about fixing errors (which was originally the purpose of all this sh*t, or so I thought), but he adds in extra garbage that ruins the movies. I don't think it'll ever make sense to us; it's like wondering why Howard Hughes did the things that he did. I think we could also make the argument that the CG eyelids on the Ewoks are infinitely more distracting/disturbing than most of the other added SE stuff.

Well, Star Wars was sold on all the old technology when it was still "cutting edge". If I remember right, Star Wars was on tape pretty early, as well as beta, and then laserdisc as well. It wasn't until George got weird that Star Wars got so horribly delayed with new formats, like not being released on DVD until F'ing 2004! Same with not being on blu ray until what, late 2011? Now that competent business people are running Star Wars I see no reason why Star Wars wouldn't be one of the first titles on a new home video format.

What Special Edition changes (if any) did people like?
Time

The only real visual change that I think was well done was the extra footage of the dance lady in the Rancor pit, even though it was pretty much ruined by Jedi Rocks. Unlike the Wampa SE scene, the added material didn't kill the intensity of the scene, and it still left the mystery of what was actually down in the pit for when we see Luke fall in. Sure I still prefer the other way where we just hear the screaming, but I like how the SE gave us a glimpse of terror on her face when she saw the door open. I should also add that it wasn't until recently that I learned that the extra footage was filmed for the SE; I always just assumed that it was extra footage not included in the final cut of Jedi, similar to the Biggs scene.

Harmy's THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK Despecialized Edition HD - V2.0 - MKV & AVCHD (Released)
Time

Really bizarre change here, I'd never noticed it before but I was looking at a complete list of changes and saw this. I have no clue what the motivation was for doing this but you'll see that Luke and the thing he's holding on to are further to the left of the frame. Can't wait to see it moved back to normal in the next version of Despecialized Empire.

4K restoration on Star Wars

I can sometimes forgive things if done with good intentions. For example, imagine all the awesome fan restorations like the Despecialized Editions or Dark Jedi didn't exist, and the only way to watch the OUT was the GOUT or a VHS tape/laserdisc, so I decide to make my own Despecialized Edition. I wouldn't know what I was doing so it would be a big disaster, but the intentions are still good I guess. I don't know, I'm usually very forgiving with things; I've always said that I have no problem with George making all these changes, but all I ask is that he continues to sell the original versions up to modern standards.
