What was Episode I hype like?
Time

I was in middle school. I remember there being tons of hype for it and it was the most excited I had ever been for a movie. After seeing it with my friends we all convinced ourselves it was still a good movie even though it maybe wasn’t a great Star Wars movie and that the Star Wars name had our expectations way up and it would have been impossible for it to fully deliver on all of the hype. We all agreed it wasn’t quite what we pictured it would be like and that some elements of it like Jar-Jar, little kid Anakin, and maybe the battle droids were kind of lame. We also believed that since it was just the first one of the new trilogy that it was just setting the stage for the next two which would surely be great Star Wars movies.

It’s interesting how a lot of fans tended to blame themselves at first for the movie being unenjoyable.

When I think of the hype, I actually think first of this review which was written just prior to theatrical release, but I didn’t discover until much later.

Summary:

Those of you waiting in line for Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace are, in my opinion, setting yourselves up for a grave disappointment. Either that, or you’re about to brainwash yourselves into the short-term, delusional embrace of a sub-par cinematic product – which is even worse.

JEDIT: I forgot how entertaining the comments are.

You have no right to criticize the genius of George Lucus. What he does is some thing of great beauty. You are a sad, sad person and I take pity on you. You have no life seeing that you can write such filth.

Thanks bunghole.

You’re awful, angry and bitter. See you in line on the 19th! 😃

I was sorry to read your review. You have obviously lost all sense of the innocence and childhood within you. I feel sorry for people like you. Most of us are still in touch with our inner child. You are obviously not, and I pity you. I pity you. For that, and also because you’re probably one of the most hated reviewers in the world now. People like you should have their ‘opinions’ taken away before they can tell others of them. God I hate critics. All you do is try to spoil others’ fun. Well good luck to you – I’m just sorry for you that you’ll never know a level of being and enjoyment that most of us do.

May the Force be without you.

There’s a great comment where someone says that Darth Sidious is obviously not the Emperor from Empire and Jedi and the author needs to get his facts right because Palpatine was the Emperor’s name, not Sidious.

It’s not inconceivable, assuming that it’s comprehensive (multiple cuts, all old special features). Look at the 6 film Middle Earth set- the MSRP is $800, but they’re “discounting” it to $400 because literally no one would pay that much.

Why would anyone pay 400 dollars for that?

and now the Senate will revoke the filibuster for the Supreme Court nomination.

Your post made me think this had happened but at this point it’s not even clear if the Dems will force it, let alone if the the Repubs will follow through with it.

Sorry if that was unclear, but I think it’s almost a certainty. Trump has endorsed they do this, giving them any justification they need. Seeing as they essentially did the same thing in the less-formal committee, I don’t see why they wouldn’t go through with it in the Senate if they could.

Trump Says ‘Go Nuclear’ as Democrats Gird for Gorsuch Fight
President Trump, seeming to relish a fight with Democrats over his nominee to the Supreme Court, encouraged the Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, on Wednesday to invoke the so-called nuclear option and abandon the 60-vote threshold for confirmation.

“If we end up with that gridlock, I would say, ‘If you can, Mitch, go nuclear,’” the president said.

Democrats are weighing strategies for opposing the nomination of Judge Neil M. Gorsuch and debating how aggressively to pursue a battle over a seat that many of them believe was stolen from their party.

well for thing, it might bite them in the butt if the Dems gain a majority in the Senate. Think about what would have happened under Obama if the Republicans couldn’t filibuster.

If they do get rid of the filibuster, I it is time for all out war(not violent or the illegal kind). The Dems should block/disrupt/refuse to cooperate/fight the GOP in every way shape and form possible at all levels of government. This includes state and local level. They should also look into a possible constitutional convention. This pisses me off. After all the filibustering the GOP did during the Obama years and now they have the nerve to get rid of it now that the shoe is on the other foot.

It’s almost like they’re massive hypocrites or something.

Or it’s almost as if both parties are two sides of the same coin.

Forced by Republican obstruction.

How is that any different than the Republicans doing this now?

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/14/us/politics/obama-supreme-court-merrick-garland.html?_r=0

Not to mention that Obama deliberately picked a centrist and Republicans threw a year-long hissy fit about it, and are now pissed because Democrats are pissed about an extreme conservative pick from Trump after throwing a year-long hissy fit about Obama’s centrist pick.

That was three years after the article Handman shared.

Did anyone notice Lucy Liu and Shaq were in the React video? There is a howard stern react video recomended too. He was so sad that it sucked. He was under a gag order and he still reviewed it.

I remember that Howard Stern summed it up perfectly. It’d make a ton of money because people needed to see it for themselves, no matter how disappointing it was.

You guys forget how much of a special case Star Wars is. The dvds for things like Droids and the Ewok films go for hundreds of dollars on the second hand market.

A boxset packed with special features for the OUT? They could and probably would set the price in the hundreds.

Yeah but before those went out of print I was seeing them in the $5 bin at Walmart.

I got the initial Blu-ray release day one at Target for $70. Doubt a set with less movies would go for more (even if we knew it was better). 4K would change things, but not that much.

Right. None of these things are expensive until they’re out of print. Also, studios don’t really price things in terms of how great the movie is. They don’t think in terms of, “this is a great movie so we can raise the price on it”. The only example of a really high priced home media release was the Wonder Years dvds recently, but that’s because they had to pay for close to 300 songs in order to put that together, but even after a few months they started selling it for a reasonable price.

And people paid $250 for it in 1993.

But it’s not 1993. Premium home entertainment is no longer a niche market. There certainly would be people buying it at $250 plus today, but they would make more money selling more at a lower price. In 1993, you already had to have money to have laserdisc, but BD is a format for the relative masses.

Home entertainment in general was a total luxury. Video tapes used to be so expensive that the only way to watch a large selection of tapes at home was to rent them, usually along with a rented VCR too. It’s just not that way anymore.

BD is as cheap as dvd.

That’s because laserdisc was a totally unique medium. It isn’t like Star Wars came out on a slightly higher quality VHS tape and they charged 250 bucks for it. The difference in quality between VHS and laserdisc was also night and day. The difference between blu ray and 4K blu ray is not.

The hype was sickening. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, and the fact that the movie wasn’t even good makes it all hilarious, and a bit tragic, in hindsight. All of those people that camped out to see it opening night seemed really ridiculous to me. I mean, you’re going to get a chance to see it. You can’t wait a few days?

  1. Most 4K discs can be found for $25-30, the same price DVD or Blu-ray was at first.
  2. You’re telling me you wouldn’t pay $45 each for a 4k restoration of the OOT? I’d be first in line.

That boxed set with the extras retailed for, if memory serves, $250 in 1993. Figure that out with inflation. That was totally worth it back then.

About $415-420.

And, tbh, if they released the OT with all extras and documentaries, I’d pay it.

I wouldn’t. That’s an insane price for movies on a medium that trends around 10% of that price.

I think $250 for a comprehensive set would be my limit.

I wouldn’t even pay that for three movies. Entire TV series cost less than that.
