Info: The Godfather Trilogy 1901 - 1980
Time
According to Wikipedia, Godfather II was originally 5 hours. Is most of this footage lost (besides scenes incorporated in the Saga/Epic/Trilogy)? Also, there are 56 minutes of deleted scenes with the DVD Trilogy set. Perhaps these could be used to re-piece together the Saga/Epic/Trilogy if the quality is better.

Does anyone know what Coppola's preferred version is?

I received Shepp's digital capture yesterday. It is very clean, however the bitrate is a little on the low side (all 4 hours fit onto one DVD), so there's some MPEG-blockiness. I'm very busy right now, but as soon as I get a chance, I'll try to average Shepp's with mine and post some screenshots. If the blockiness makes its way through the average, I'll ask Molly to send me her capture, which is at a higher bitrate and covers four DVDs.

Idea & Info: Highlander (1985) US theatrical cut, anyone?
Time
From imdb:

"The European version and later US Director's Cut does not contain a short scene shot from inside Det. Bedsoe's car as he stakes out Brenda's apartment during MacLeod's visit."

"As MacLeod lays on the floor after the final battle, he can be heard saying "I want to go home" on the original US version, but not on the European version and later US Director's Cut."

"In the original U.S. release during the scene when Connor and Ramirez jump off the cliff, you can hear Ramirez yell, "MacLeod, this is the Quickening!" In the European version, Ramirez and Connor just yell as they jump."

"In earlier versions Ramirez says he's "...chief metallurgist of King Phillip II of Spain" while in later versions and the Uncut DVD he says he's "...chief metallurgist of Charles V." This change is shown in Highlander Two Ramirez still says the first version."

"In the American versions, as Kurgen is driving into New York, the opening guitar to the Queen song "Gimme The Prize" can be heard over the news report and the vocals start when Kurgen pops in the tape. However in the Director's cut, the opening guitar part has been taken out and the song starts at the vocals like before when Kurgen pops in the cassette."

I'm happy to report that the airings yesterday were the extended version. The master tape hasn't held up especially well over time, but at least we now have a strong DV cap that can be averaged with any other captures anyone might have done. Here are some highlights from the deleted scenes:

Gas Station Attendent in Finkle's home town:

Snowflake grabs Einhorn's gun:

And my personal favorite, an addition so brief that no one ever noticed it: before sifting through the filter in the dolphin tank, Ace pulls back a curtain with a stylistic fluorish, supposedly to reveal the filter, even though it's clear to the viewer that the filter was within view all along:

Telemundo is doing another airing of the theatrical cut today, from

4pm-6pm.

FEEL FREE TO CAP!

Telemundo's is the only broadcast I've found to feature uncut violence, so at the very least, I'll be cutting this version into the extended version where appropriate (spears through peoples' feet, etc.) At the most, I'll be using every bit of the Telemundo version I can, since the image is crisper than the Sci-Fi extended. I'll need to color correct the two so they cut well together, but I think it's doable. This will also require three captures of both the Sci-Fi and Telemundo versions, so they can be averaged separately with TooT, then cut together. To kill the logos on the Sci-Fi, it looks like I'll be able to use ReverendBeastly's Encore VHS, and for the Telemundo logos, the official VHS. I'm still not 100% confident about that part yet though.

Info & For Use: Ace Ventura Pet Detective - tv footage
Time
I have the original 4:3 DVD, though I believe it's pan and scan, not open matte. Still, I agree the original DVD is the source to use, since the new Widescreen DVD won't blend with the 4:3 TV footage, and the original DVD has the extra "Dolphin Trainer" scene. I have the original NBC broadcast, but it's SLP and kinda nasty. I'd love a fresh DV cap, and I'm willing to scour TV guide for a good many months in the hopes they'll air it before I fall back on VHS.

Been a while, but I notice Ace Ventura is airing on TBS this Sunday, the 15th at 4:00pm and again at Midnight. Both airings will last two hours, the original length of the extended TV cut (with commercials). It's possible this isn't the extended version, just the original with more commercials added to pad it out, but it may be what we've been waiting for.

Anybody want to cap? Perhaps a number of captures to be composited with an averaging filter?

Idea: X-Men 3 - Deleted Scenes - fan edit?
Time
I'm working on an X-Men 3 edit in Womble and trying to incorporate as many deleted scenes as possible. I'd been unable to change the timeline setting from 29.97 to 23.96 when I decided to check out the source clips, and it turns out they're 29.97.

Is this correct? I can't believe Fox would encode a brand new high-budget movie in anything but 24p. I ripped the DVD with DVD Decrypter and then threw the files into Vegas and Gspot, both of which say it's 29.97.

Shepp, we meant no disrespect in shouting your name from the hilltops; we're just dying for your un-noisey capture! I thought perhaps you had left the board, but am glad you're still here. Did you ever take any screenshots from your capture?

Molly, if Shepp's ends up being less than pristine, I'd love to have yours to average it with.

Jaiman Tuckuh, I appreciate your input on the average vs. denoise issue. I just got a really crazy idea: what if I averaged the average clip with the denoise clip? It gives me a solid mix between the two:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/thegreathunger/snapshot20070629210114.jpg

I have about one-and-a-half HQ DVR caps of the SciFi. I don't know if Molly kept her RW's. I kept meaning to ask her for them.

Both captures would be most appreciated, assuming Shepp doesn't share his. I believe with averaging, the more caps the, merrier!

3 copies is enough for "Toot", which should work wonders. But it probably won't be as efficient when mixing DV sources with MPEG2.

I can't even find Toot! Nothing but broken links...

In particular, I have a shot that's partially covered by a Sci-Fi ad on the bottom. The shot takes place when we come back from a commercial and Helen wakes up on the Atol right before the smokers attack.

I guess that's been taken care of on the re-airing, huh?

Does this answer your question?

Unfortunately, all the same commercial breaks are present, with more annoying ads. ReverendBeastly's Encore cap will likely go a long way towards fixing that problem. And if compositing with the Encore is possible, I'll do it.

My system drive crashed, but I got a new one installed just in time for the second airing of the sci-fi extended version. I experimented with the averaging filter "Overlay" last night, mixing the two Sci-Fi cuts to reduce noise:

Original:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/thegreathunger/HydroAddict-1.jpg

Original with Denoise:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/thegreathunger/HydroAddict-1withNoiseFilter.jpg

Original averaged with Second Capture:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/thegreathunger/HydroAddict-1and2Averaged.jpg

Original averaged with Second Capture then Denoised:
http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i82/thegreathunger/HydroAddict-1and2AveragedwithNoiseF.jpg

The Denoise works best after averaging the two captures together, however I still wonder whether the Denoise is too much. It would help a lot come MPEG2 encoding time, but it does also offer a certain "plasticity" when placed next to the averaged clips. I wonder if an average of more sources might yield even better results.

The best source would probably be shepp74's satellite capture (potentially devoid of noise and thus, not needing noise filtering or averaging), but I'm having trouble getting in touch with Shepp74. In fact, I haven't recieved any captures from anyone yet. If anybody has ReverendBeastley's Encore capture (or a demon's invite so I can download it myself), I'm going to need that to finish my edit. I'd also love additional captures of the recent Sci-Fi airings to kill the noise.

HELP! THIS PROJECT IS HOGGING 454 GIGS!

24p- Why, again?
Time
Not being a glutton for punishment, I waited for an identical airing on the Sci-Fi channel to roll around to test the average filters. Unfortunately, "Average" and "Toot" are both very hard to find (broken links). I tried a number of scripts from "7.2.12 Using multiple captures to reduce noise," and the only one I could get to work was "Overlay" (the first one).

It works nicely to reduce noise, but I guess I was hoping for something more. Here's my question: these filters all blend the two captures together; why not identify the similarities between the two (the actual image) and subtract the difference (the noise)? Is there a filter like that? Or am I imagining the impossible?

We're getting another Extended Version airing:
Thursday, Jun, 21 07:00 PM SCI-FI 68

Once again, it's four hours. Should be identical to my first capture, but we'll see. I've been trying to get in touch with shepp74 to get screenshots and a copy of the direct satellite capture, but if that doesn't work out, I'll do a second Sci-Fi capture and use the two to cancel out the analog noise from each other (see s7en's suggesstion here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=12&threadid=7959).

Also, ReverendBeastly is sending me his VHS to fill in a few holes.

Does your software have any chroma filters that you can use? If so, it may be able to cleanup the chroma channel (although maybe at the expense of a slight loss in chroma detail).

Someone recommended Reinterpolate411, though that had no effect. Is that the type of filter you mean? I'm running all my files through Avisynth, so I can use any Avisynth filters.

Just a quick aside, as don't want to derail the thread, have you thought about combining the your multiple captures to reduce noise/improve picture quality? It's the technique Citizen used to create his very clean Star Wars laserdisc trasfers.

Some info from the doom9 forum: Look for the section '7.2.12 Using multiple captures to reduce noise'

There's also the Average and TooT plugins that can be used to get the best out of multple captures

All of my captures are from different broadcasts, which means I wouldn't be able to apply this filter because they have different framing, edits, etc. Am I correct in assuming that? Even if that is the case, a couple other people captured the same broadcast as me. Perhaps their versions, combined with mine, could cut the noise?

Looking at the source image, I think you could be right. Is it just on shots with high motion?

I may be obsessing a bit too much over "restoring" quality lost in the broadcast. The horizontal distortion is present in even still shots (though barely visible), but I just realized it's present in noisy areas of the shots, which is "motion" as far as an MPEG encoder is concerned. I'm ready to chock this one up to MPEG and close the book.

I was obsessing all day over a slightly different issue, leaving the broadcast noise alone or accepting blocky artifacts from the FFT3D denoiser, and when I finally previewed the two side by side on my TV, the difference was barely visible. I think I just need to accept that these are going to be great on a TV and crap on a PC monitor.

RidgeShark,

Thanks for your words of encouragement. I'm now working with DGMPGDec frameserving VOBs to Avisynth to VFAPI to Vegas. I tried re-rendering to MPEG2 in Vegas, but noticed quality loss due to recompression. Is there some way to re-render without recompressing, or is that only possible by cutting the MPEGs together in software like Womble? Thanks again for getting me started on the right foot.
