30i to 24p to 25p to 24p?

is it the Waterworld from JT?

if it is I will take a look at it sometime today or tomorrow.
what framerate are you wanting in the end?

DJ

Yeah, it's the Waterworld Theatrical from Jaiman Tuckuh (Not the Extended). I want it to be 24p in the end. The thing is, once I IVTC it from 30i to 24p, it's 24p AS FAR AS AVISYNTH IS CONCERNED. So I can't convert it to 24p becuase I don't know how to tell AviSynth that it's actually 25p PAL.

30i to 24p to 25p to 24p?
Time
I have a TV capture which is sourced from an NTSC broadcast of a film, so it's 30i. When I perform an IVTC, it's restored to 24p (or 23.97), but it plays too fast. I need to slow it down around 74% to get to the right speed, which must mean it was originally a 24p film speeded up for PAL, then converted to NTSC for broadcast in North America.

I'm a little confused with "AssumeFPS" and "ConvertFPS" in Avisynth, not sure which applies in this odd situation. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Oh, god, TWO YEARS?! I know it hasn't been that long! But it does feel like it. My edit is complete, the DVD's are pretty much done, I'm just wrapping up a little making-of featurette that was requested by someone on the boards.

Jaiman's actually been the one who's been fighting this war for the past month or two, trying to get some better quality caps to fill in for the VHS shots I had to throw in. He's just made a breakthrough and it looks like he'll be able to get them to me soon. I plug the shots in, presto: DVD DONE!

I hate setting release dates because I never meet them, but we're looking at another couple weeks, a month tops. Waterworld originally premiered on July 28, and I guarantee we'll beat that date!

Thanks. I'm finally happy with the business card. You have no idea how much of a pain getting that Heinz Gezwellwert to fit was, and in that specific sort of arched shape too.

I can't believe you fit it in so cleanly.

klokwerk said:

Anyway, I'll work on it some more soon. If you have a blurb for the back cover or specs and stuff specific to this edit (screencaps?) that you want me to use, then I can start work on the back. :)

I'm not too good with words... I'm thinking and the only points I can come up with are that:

1) The current in-print DVD is the theatrical cut, which is missing a bunch of scenes
2) This one's chock full of 'em!

I hope someone has something more eloquent or thematically appropriate... worst case scenario, we could steal from the original DVD cover.

Hey, Dark Jedi! Yours was the first Star Wars transfer I watched... really, the first Fan Preservation I ever saw. Good to have you watching our efforts.

Jaiman is going to great lengths to capture Huffyuv versions of Encore's Theatrical and Extended cuts so that we can see what kind of quality we're looking at. Once we know what we're looking at, we'll take it from there.

It's done! Took me a while to overcome the drift problem (the original DVD with the dolphin scene was cut in 30i, not 24p, so there were field errors), but it's all set now! No fancy-pants special features or menus, but you can find those on the other Ace DVDs--this one is PURE, EXTENDED, CONTENT.

The one thing I'd like to include is a nice DVD cover and print label. Any photoshoppers out there up to the task? I'd like to take the original cover:

"ACE VENTURA
PET DETECTIVE
To serve and protect...
...your pets"

and change it to:

"HEINZ GEZWELLWERT
TRAINER OF DOLPHIN
To train ze dolphin...
...you must zink like ze dolphin"

Also, it would be nice to have a dolphin nipping at his leg instead of the dog. This, obviously, is a nod to the added dolphin trainer scene.

Firstly, Vegas squishes still images to their proper aspect ratio, so they don't match up perfectly... sorry.

Here's a comparison of the two THEATRICAL CUTS:

Jaiman's:

I'll post some approximate screen comparisons soon so we can start to get some idea of the quality comparison between mine and Jaiman's. I think his Theatricals look great, but my Sci-Fi captures might win out for the extended.

If Jaiman's extended holds up to mine, we can go for a logo-free version. Logo removal is a great option, since the bulk of the film will be from the Encore Extended (on-demand), with only about two dozen shots from the theatrical.

Hi, I watched this thread for the past couple months and I thought it was just about time to appear. With some adequate pics I could compose design patterns in order to create a DVD cover. So let me know.

Hello and Welcome, we're glad to have you with us.
I think Jaiman has an HD copy to pull stills from for you.

IMDB only lists widescreen laserdiscs. Of course they may not be thorough. But who among us has a good LD Player, anyway?

I've tried, they're all widescreen.

Jaiman Tuckuh said:

I have an suggestion, but you're not going to like it. (Unless you already used a Time Base Corrector, then never mind).

You're right; I don't like it! No, seriously, I can't polish this stuff anymore. If a few shots need to be VHS w/o TBC, so be it... unless that on-demand cap has uncut violence?

Jaiman Tuckuh said:

Too bad we don't have an HD to crop from.

Actually, they released an HD-DVD and I've seen torrents for it. I have no means of playing it, but if anyone does, I'm interested in extracting stills.

I'm tired of the standard Waterworld poster, so I thought there might be a talented graphic designer out there who could whip up a DVD cover and disk labels. I could put the JPEGs into the DVD-ROM folder before I burn the DVD. I was thinking something along the lines of my menu designs, which have a "peering through a telescope" motif. Perhaps you could take the shot of the lookout spotting the smokers with his telescope, and in his telescope reflection you could toss a shot from a deleted scene (I have a few).

Other ideas I had were a collage of Hi-Res stills of The Mariner teaching Enola to swim, since there's some pretty shots in there. Or, a one-shot wraparound of one of the wide shots of the ocean floor with decimated buildings.

I also have a logo for my fake production company that can be added next to the Universal logo.

Well, my version has been done for some time and I'm ready to release it. I really like the quality of your capture, and I think it's ideal for filling in the shots where I used the Encore Extended VHS. I'd like to toss in those shots and burn it off.

One other "would be great" is if there exists a copy of the theatrical (uncut) at better than VHS quality, which is what I've used so far. Most of the added violence I got from a Telemundo capture (apparently Hispanic viewers are less sensitive!) but the nudity, and a few shots like the Deacon offering Enola a smoke came from VHS and it shows. I've considered taking the widescreen DVD and cropping it, but since the VHS is open-matte and has MORE picture, zooming in on the widescreen version leaves out 70% of the original image.

I can't think of a better source than the VHS though, which is ironic considering it's the THEATRICAL cut!

Hey guys, I'm working on some cool menus and Bonus Features for the DVDs. I'd love to see some screencaps of the On-Demand version and I can post some from my captures to determine the best image quality. Since the on-demand version has no commercial breaks, it could at the least fill in the few areas where I had to use the VHS cap to cover up Sci-Fi's commercial fadeouts. I could see the On-Demand cap suffering from MPEG blockies, which my caps lack. The main artifacts in mine are those presented by coaxial cable signal degradation/noise, DV's loss of color information, and Station logos.

In summary, it looks great on any 4:3 SDTV, and not perfect on an HDTV.

EQ Audio Hiss
Time
I'm trying to kill the annoying "hiss" present in my TV captures of Waterworld, and I lose most of it when I trim the audible range down to 40Hz to 5,100Hz. Am I losing a lot of the movie's sound as well? I admit I don't know a lot about EQ and I'm simply cutting in from -Infinity dB at 39Hz to 0 dB at 40Hz. I'm using the Audio EQ effect in Sony Vegas.

The 90's Spider-Man cartoon on myspleen, much like the 90's X-Men cartoon, has been released officially on VHS and DVD as specific episodes, but never the whole season or series. Most of the series you'd still need to get as TV rips.

As for the 70's Nick Hammond Spider-Man, the whole series has been released on VHS, the newest ones being from Rhino video (the more recent the recording, the less the degradation). You can find them on Ebay, though they're long out of print (1997?) and it takes a while for a specific episode to go up. The three movies (The Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man Strikes Back AKA The Deadly Dust, and The Chinese Web AKA The Dragon's Challenge) are easier, especially on Ebay UK (assuming you can transfer PAL).
