Info & Help Wanted: Stereoscopic (3D) Films
Time

A number of classic stereoscopic (also called “3D”) films have been available on modern DVD in only their 2D forms. This is because Anaglyph 3D (the kind with the Red/Cyan glasses) is of shoddy quality compared to the Polarized 3D (full color) that the films were initially exhibited in, and Polarized is only viewable with a complex theater setup consisting of dual projectors, filters, and a special screen. Full color 3D home videos have been available, however, in many now Out of Print titles including:

Friday the 13th 3D
Jaws 3D
Dial M For Murder
Creature from the Black Lagoon
It Came from Outter Space

These were all released on an 80’s home video format called VHD. The technology worked by using video’s alternating fields to present the left and right images separately, and then wearing specially timed “shutter glasses” connected to the player which cover each eye for the field it isn’t supposed to see. The flicker is so fast that it’s supposedly not noticable, and the quality is much better than Anaglyph because it’s full-color.

I would like for someone who owns or has access to a VHD player to do some top-quality transfers of these old titles. The films should be as easy to capture as any other analog format, and once captured, can be deinterlaced into separate Files for the Right and Left eyes. There is a freeware application called Stereo Movie Maker which can then convert the Left/Right images into any 3D format: If you have a Polarized 3D home theater, you can load the left and right images into your projectors, if you have a standard DVD player, you can convert the two to Anaglyph, and if you have a modern Field Sequential system, you can convert to that format.

Modern Field Sequential systems are the same as VHD Field Sequential except they’re standard DVDs which play in your DVD player, but require a special box and glasses to view. They’re available on eBay and elsewhere for about $60 (search for “Shutter Theater”). The problem is that aside from Spy Kids 3D, there aren’t any high profile movies released in this format. The movies I’ve listed above exist on Field Sequential DVD only as VHD bootlegs, which I’ve read are of shoddy quality and contain “ghosting” (the left image bleeds into the right and vice versa) because the number of fields in the VHD format are different from the number in the modern Field-Sequential DVD format, so a “direct-dub” bootlegger would ruin the effect. It really wouldn’t be that hard to do a good OT-Quality transfer, and the newer DVD releases could be utilized for the soundtrack.

Does anyone have VHD’s?

well, if thats the case, it could probably just be added as a subtitle track, so you wouldnt actually have to re-render the video.  no loss in quality whatsoever.  Any chance of a screen shot for ANY AMC DVD on TV segment?  it would be good to see how it was done.  I really havent seen any of these, but they should be really interesting.  ESPECIALLY for terminator.

Unfortunately, I don't believe any are airing until December.

I watched the T2 "Enhanced Viewing Mode" on my T2 Extreme DVD yesterday, and it's excellent. It tells you not just how all the effects were done, but also how the narrative was structured to keep the viewer interested, and tips for guerilla filmmakers. It's Film School in a box. Even if AMC's T1 "Enchanced DVD_TV" was only a fraction as good as the T2 DVD, it's worth watching.

thats a shame this seems so lost.  it would be great to get a copy of this.  even if a really poor quality version could be obtained, it would be possible to reconstruct it using a high quality video source.

Especially since I think the text was in the widescreen bars (and thus could be composited into a DVD-quality source).

I talked to a woman at AMC, and they cannot sell/release it due to licensing issues, and they never rerun their DVD_TV segments. I even asked if there was a text document of the commentary, and she said no! So, I can see two possibilities:

1) Somebody taped it and all we need to find him/her. It must be out there somewhere! (I've checked torrent sites and eBay to no avail).

2) Someone has a friend who works for AMC who could scrounge up a copy.

I think this would be a great preservation. I just watched the animated annecdotes from the Terminator 2 DVD, and it's like a film school in a box. I recall the AMC Terminator 1 annecdotes as being very similar. It should be on DVD, but it isn't because it was made by AMC for this one broadcast.

There are not 30 mins of deleted scenes on the dvd, so where did he get the 30 mins from?

We need to find Drake Retro to see if this info lines up.

Supposedly, about 45 minutes were cut:

http://www.batman-on-film.com/opinion_scissorpuppy_forever.html

Only about half that made it to the DVD Deleted Scenes. They were going to do a full Director's Cut but cheaped out. I think we need a talented fan editor to step up and cut something as close to the original cut as possible using the deleted scenes.

I may be in the minority, but I don't want "Tim Burton's Batman Forever." You can't fake that someone else directed a movie, no matter how talented an editor you are. I want Joel Schumacher's original vision of Batman Forever, for no other reason than he's the one who directed the movie! I think it was a great popcorn movie, and with his darker scenes re-inserted, and arranged as scripted, who knows? It may have been a match to Tim Burton's original.

I don't want 30 minutes deleted; I want 30 minutes ADDED!

It sucks even more for me because I wanted to get this one and now I'll have to wait. I have no objection paying for the real thing - the covers/menus just looked pretty cool on this one and I wanted to watch it sooner rather than later.

First of all, I prefer to think we inspired this new release from Universal. Who knows? It worked for the Richard Donner Superman II cut!

Secondly, my cut is still up on the pirate bay, and we won't know until we see the official release whether this cut is still worthy of preservation. If, for example, they do a direct transfer of the TV cut, it will be lacking the profanities that I painstakingly preserved. Also, it will be widescreen, which I think is for the best, but it does set it apart from my cut which is open-matte. At the very least, you won't find all my gorgeous station logos in the official release ;)

Sincerely, I hope it's remastered, profane, and just awesome--I can't wait to see it!

I picked up a Terminator DVD but it’s lacking the animated anecdotes that I recall seeing on TV. These anecdotes are similar to those on the T2 and Back to the Future DVDs, explaining how certain shots were accomplished, etc. I think it aired around 2003 or 2004, on Spike or AMC or a similar station (extended cable channels 25-75ish). It was probably widescreen, and aired UNCUT. The animated anecdotes version aired back-to-back with the no-anecdotes version. I know this is vague and I wish I had taped it. Anyone have/know anything about this version?

One question, wasn't the Telemondo version in Spanish, because the trailer seems to be in Spanish.

The Telemundo captures were in Spanish, but I just used the audio from the Sci-Fi version. Although, since the Sci-Fi version cut out some violence, I had to take it from the VHS or Telemundo, and they dub even cries of agony into "Spanish," so you may hear a Spanish guy getting hurt in one of the battles ;)

The only 'bug' I noticed was on disc 2 from 55:50 to 56:50 there's a row at the bottom of the screen with some distortion, but that's all (you probably won't notice if you watch it on tv).
And then there's a 'bug' in your featurette: "how it went down", at the end, you can see the shadow of the camera on the back of your shirt :p

Wow, good eyes! The first one I never would have noticed, which means I won't go to the trouble of correcting it! The second one I tried to cover up by squashing the contrast range, but you caught me nonetheless ;)

Where you are completely wrong however is the BTTF example though. Unforgivable ;)
The wrong cropping in BTTF 2 & 3 came because they took a fullscreen master tape (which already had the cropped wide to full composite scenes) and then cropped it. Of course the framing would be wrong then, it's cropped twice now!
When they fixed it they went back to the original negative and took the original widescreen composite scenes which were matted correctly.

Back to the Future 2 & 3 were both shot open-matte, which means the Fullscreen master isn't Pan & Scan, but rather includes more information at the top and bottom of the screen. You may be right that they cropped the fullscreen master, which in theory would work, except for the fact that open-matte fullscreen releases usually do zoom the slightest bit (and thus lose a little off the left and right, see Waterworld screens earlier in the thread), and the guy who was overseeing the crop must have had his eyes closed.

I noticed one 'glitch' where two scenes were merged but didnt match.

i think its at the end... where Helen walks around the end of a boat, the scene changes and she's a few feet back.
Nothing major.. just something i noticed. IMO, not worth fixing.

If it's a bad edit that was in the original extended version, I just leave it in. Do you know the timecode for the glitch?

Just a simple "insert disc two" message would be nice...wouldn't be too hard for the user to add it themselves if they need it, but now I know when to expect it, so I'm okay ;)

Also, is that where the ABC edit cut it at? Long time ago when I found this thread, I remember you were trying to find out where they cut it, didn't read up to see if you found out.

I couldn't find out where the ABC cut ended, so I had to pick a halfway point. There was a commercial break at this spot in one of my captures, so I originally cut it there for technical reasons, and it stuck. "Insert Disc Two" may have been helpful, I guess I was just pretending it was a laserdisc when I decided to cut to black ;)

ok,

was this version supposed to bring back all the original uncut lines?

i've noticed one change already..

==================================================

there's a scene where jack black (the pilot) spots the mariner, and comes back

to the ship to report to the deacon...................and he says 'and some atoll WITCH'...

of course this is censored version.....because all the other ones have the actual line...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i'll make a note of the other changes as i see/hear them...

later

-1

There are a few lines like that that are censored for TV, but I couldn't replace because there's no analogous line in the theatrical cut. Since the extended was only broadcast on TV, there is no "uncut" version of the line. In fact, in the theatrical cut, Jack Black's only line in that scene is off-camera. He says "uh-huh."

Nonetheless, a good catch by negative1.

One thing I've forgot to mention in my previous posts, what is the SPREPARE.SPSS file?
I've never seen one of those before and searching on google didn't get me very far.

Ah, it's a file used by DVD Architect that shouldn't have been included in the torrent. When you build a DVD, DVD Architect creates a prepare file. This way, if you change one little thing and then build the DVD again, it doesn't have to re-encode everything, just the thing you changed.
