Saving DVD menus
Time
There is also programs called VOB Blanker and Pgcedit. I've used them and they work well.

Vob Blanker allows you to change the program that plays on the menu when you select it. Say you have the menu from an official DVD. You want to change make it play your version when you select "play movie". What you'd do is author a temp DVD with only that one item in a particualar title. Then you'd use vob blanker to change the ifo assoicated with the "play movie" function of the original DVD.

With PGC Edit, you can change what the buttons do and re-arrange things. You can add new buttons to the menus as well I think.

Child's Play - in widescreen from Monsters HD? A preservation? (Released)
Time

I heard this movie, as well as Monster Squad was broadcast in widescreen on MonstersHD. The current R1 DVD is pan & scan. Here’s a DVD cover I made for the new HD version, assuming it uses the same menus, audio and subtitle options as the retail R1. I know my copy will. It’s made to match with the retail R1 Child’s Play 2 cover from Universal. I also slightly modified Bride of Chucky, and modified Child’s Play 3 and Seed of Chucky to match. What do you think of this one? Someone wanna host it somewhere?

The Merits of the Prequel Trilogy and the "Saga"

Go-Mer,

CO's right. Episode IV was only meant to mimic the Saturday serial's he loved. He never really had anything but a backstory outline for the Prequels, just to give weight and context to the Original Trilogy.

He did mention that if he ever would go back and tell the backstory that they would be different in tone and style. But, he didn't have it all planned out. He had the highlights in outline form as CO said. But, there are hints in his outlines and drafts for the Original Star Wars of what the Prequels could shape up to be like if he made them. The biggest hint was the Prologue to the original Star Wars novel.

Still, I think you and I, are the only ones at the moment who believe that he made it work quite well, even if he didn't have it all planned out to the letter.

And what's this issue about the word youngling? It's just a word.

As far as youngling is concerned, I take it as this, a young jedi is called a youngling. A young "regular" kid is called a child. Much like Obi-Wan is a man and also a jedi, young Ani at the end of Episode I was a youngling and a child as well. That's my take anyway.

I wanted to take my girlfriend to see Episode III in the theaters. She wondered how come I liked Star Wars so much. She had only seen Episode I at that point and didn't like it too much. I convinced her that we would watch all six movies in order together (including the Clone Wars cartoons). So we watched I and II on DVD, and she liked II a lot more than part I. She and I really liked the romantic aspect of it. At that point she couldn't wait to continue the Saga. I tried to get us to watch both volumes of Clone Wars before going to the moves to see Episode III, but we ended up seeing I, II, III, Clone Wars 1 & 2, then IV, V and VI. It's a totally different (and IMO better) watching them that way. As soon as we saw the title "A New Hope" it was so uplifting after seeing the sad ending of "Revenge of the Sith". Her questions about the OT were totally different. Does Leia know Darth Vader is her father? Does she find out? When? Does Luke know? Find out? When? Brother and sister? Do they know? And we couldn't stop picturing Anakin inside the Darth Vader suit. And yes, that was a good thing. It was also really cool to see the Anakin we remembered from "Sith" at the end of Return of the Jedi. It even goes along with what Obi Wan says in ANH. "Your father was murdered and betrayed by Darth Vader", which from a certain point of view, was true. We had no problem believing that the good in Anakin all but died at the same time as Mace Windu, and the young ghost makes PERFECT sence. Her favorite SW films are II, III and VI.

Idea: Turning Catwoman into a Batman movie?

So is anyone else wanting to see Keaton come back for a movie version of the comic The Dark Knight Returns? He is now the same age as Batman is suppose to be in that comic. Now if we can only get Tim Burton back to direct...

I'd still want to see Clint Eastwood do it. I know he's way past the timeline, but it would be so freakin' cool. At least Bruce Wayne in a Batman Beyond film.

Ooh that's nice! Who would play Batman? Maybe Will Friedel (Boy Meets World) who voices him would work?

Seriously, what is so special about PAL? I mean I can only understand if that's the standard where you live, but..
Time
Why do people care so much about PAL? Isn't the native resolution for movies made for the USA NTSC? I mean if it's not, than why is that the standard in America AND Japan? Japan is more technologically advanced than anyone, so I say whatever their standard is is also the definitive standard. The only reason I can understand why people prefer PAL is if that is what they are used to, or that's what their TV plays. I mean are you people THAT busy that you have to cut a few minutes of time from your movie watching out and watch a sped-up version of an American movie? I can understand if the movie was shot specially for PAL territories, but why would you want to sacrifice ANYTHING to watch a movie that was intended first and formost for the American market (like Star Wars), in a different resoultion? Yeah, supposedly PAL gives more picture information, a few freaking lines. Big whoop. I don't think it's worth the sped up crap. I posted something in the Laserdisc vs. DVD comparison thread, (which the title and first post said NOTHING about PAL or NTSC, so I assumed it would be about NTSC, since that is the standard for a US movie like SW)

"Why does ANYONE care about PAL? I mean these are AMERICAN movies. AMERICAN movies. AMERICAN movies are NTSC. Screw PAL and it's not-NTSC-ness."

Which was promptly deleted by someone other than me, but imortalized in someone's signature. I was really hoping to find an NTSC LD/ DVD comparison, and when all people in there seemed to care about was PAL, I got upset. Seriously, why all the fuss over PAL? Why did they even make multiple formats to start with?

Please don't delete this, I am being dead serious. I am honestly curious about this. All this complaining about not changing anything, etc, but you can't tell me that converting to PAL isn't some form of changing the movies. I know so is NTSC, but it's closer to the theater version than PAL is.

Do you REALLY think there will be remastered versions of the OOT or whatever? I don't.

Oh, yeah, that reminds me. The effects shots for the BTTF movies were filmed 1.85:1, as opposed to the rest of the movie. So if you get the widescreen version, you're losing some picture in regular scenes but seeing the full picture in the effects shots. In the fullscreen version, you're seeing more picture in regular scenes but getting cropped effects shots. You lose a little bit each way, just like with Super 35.

Yeah, but isn't the important thing the way it was shown in theaters, the way it was intended to be shown? It's not about getting more or less picture.

(gets out the 'ol Rocking Chair...)

You see, back in the day (A long time ago... the 70's), VCRs weren't commercially viable for consumer use, so Super 8mm was the most standard, well, standard for viewing movies in the home. The films were expensive, so most people bought digests. The digests came in 50, 200 and 400ft reels. At Sound speed (24fps), that was about 2, 7, and 17 minutes per reel, respectively. These 400 ft color sound reels went to the more discriminating Super 8mm buyers. Most of us kids at the time bought the 200ft black and white, silent versions to relive our movie thrills.

I had most of these reels, but sold them a few years back for some quick cash. It would be wonderful to see these again!

BTW, I believe the ESB reels went as follows:

Reel one: Battle on Hoth, Dagobah crash landing and the asteroid field.
Reel two: More Dagobah, Bespin sequence.

Bring them on!

Finally! A desent explaination! That's all I wanted. The 70's were crap. Except the three years I was alive 76-79. And I didn't know a movie from a poopie diaper in that time. Well maybe a little.

"BUT ANAMORPHIC ENHANCEMENT ALTERS THE MOVIES!!!"
Time
Look. I know what anamorphic is. I have anamorphic DVDs. I also have non-anamorphic DVDs. I was (kinda) kidding when I said it would alter the movies. I mean it (kinda) does. But anyway, my main point is that anamorphic/ non-anamorphic will NEVER be a deciding factor to me. If I had to choose from the get go, I'd probably buy anamorphic. If a newer release of any movie was released and the ONLY difference was that is was anamorphic while the previous release was simply letterboxed widescreen or whatever, I would NOT upgrade. If the special features were better, I probably would. Anamorphic/ non-anamorpic, to me= the same thing. I watch anamorpic movies on my widescreen TV with the DVD player set to 4x3 letterbox. I like the top and bottom black bars. I watch all movies in full mode w/o side bars and that makes me very happy. I also like seeing subtitles in the black not touching the movie. That's just what I like. I never said anamorphic was bad (well kinda as a joke), just that it never will matter for me. Even if my precious prequels and SEs were non-anamorphic, as long as they were widescreen, it doesnt matter to me.

Greedo subtitles outside the 16:9 frame

I added subtitles to the EditDroid A New Hope disc and I have the ISOMix of the other two movies. I could make a kit like I did for Backstroke of the West for the official "Bonus discs", even though I am ok with them as is. I just need to buy these new releases. (I watched my friends copies previously, plus Wal-Mart had em playing.)

"BUT ANAMORPHIC ENHANCEMENT ALTERS THE MOVIES!!!"

The main reason for me to have them on DVD (and I do know what anamorphic does, I just dont care and never have), is because I want to watch everything on the same format. VHS can wear out, DVDs cant. You can skip to any scene on DVD, and the picture quality is usually better than VHS. I have never had a desire to own a laserdisc player, though I do own a few discs for some reason. All I am saying is that I am happy now. I like the SEs, but I just wanted to have both versions on DVD. All we need now is the 1997 SEs and all of the unreleased extras. All done.
