So, here’s the link to the DotF DSII duel edit I mentioned earlier. The transition out of the song into the film’s actual score still needs a little work but otherwise, I’m pretty happy with it. Apologies for the overall low quality, I’m not sure where to find good quality clips from the film, so I screen recorded off of Disney+ on my PC for the video and ripped the music from YouTube.

Later in the video, when Rey heals Kylo, is a leftover from some experimentation I was doing with the back half of the video. Leading up to the voices (again, while Rey is healing Kylo), the audio would have been sucked out by the “Force Bond” sound effect and all the foley is replaced with a low rumble (to try to make it seem like Rey is getting pissed) and the second half of Anakin’s Dark Deeds. The foley slowly comes back in as she loses the upper hand – albeit distant and echoey – and then returns to normal when Leia calls out to Ben. I definitely don’t think the voices would work for this fan edit, but I thought it was interesting and ironic how well the visuals and VO lined up so I decided to share it regardless.

I really like this. In my opinion, the song fits the Duel really well.

If we’re to have Ben Solo die, I think the best way to go about it would be to have him heal Rey and die while Palpatine is busy turning the fleet into a BBQ. We have the force ghosts appear like normal but when Rey is about to ignite the second lightsaber, Ben Solo’s force ghost appears with his hand reached out just like the rest, ending Sidious with a final blow.

Later he would appear with Luke, Leia ( and maybe Han’s) ghosts on Tatooine.

A more meaningful death and redemption!

Except the area is rubble at this point and there’s no ships above getting zapped, so the background looks pretty different if you move this scene up. I don’t disagree this is a cool idea though. May just look out of place without some additional vfx.

I think kewlfish did a nice job with that aspect, at least for a mockup. You’re right though, the background would have to be blurred a little and the lighting would have to match Palpatine’s Lightning.

Yeah, I still really like this concept. In addition to adding lightning to the background when Rey is looking down at Ben, I have just a few suggestions that I think would make the idea work even better.

  1. When Ben picks up Rey’s body, he briefly looks off to the left. Perhaps when that happens, slip in a shot of Palps shocking the fleet, so it’s more apparent that he’s completely distracted.
  2. We can’t cut out “Rey, the Force will be with you. Always.” which kewlfish’s concept does. Instead, keep that dialogue in (audio only), and have Leia’s “Always” synced up with when Rey’s hand moves and she grabs Ben’s.
  3. I don’t think it’s necessary to keep the POV in space for the entire duration of the voices. Instead, just cut back and forth between space, Rey’s eyes, and reuse the shot of Ben holding her.

Also, not exactly a suggestion, but kewlfish’s concept has the unfortunate side effect of cutting out some of the other Jedi voices. So if there were a way to preserve those, I think the idea would work flawlessly.

And while they’re at it they should bring back Trevorrow and Derek Connolly to write and direct.
They deserve a chance.

I really hope not. Treverrow’s script may have had some cool Resistance stuff and some very pretty concept art, but even ignoring how totally and completely it butchers the concept of balance in the force, it’s got serious issues.

Plus, all of Trevorrow’s movies are utterly joyless. How do you make Jurassic Park boring? Like Life Finds a Way, Trevorrow found a way.

I agree that his script has serious issues, but I mean, to be fair, we’ve only seen the first draft. Had he stayed on board, it certainly would have been revised more.

Also, Trevorrow’s Safety Not Guaranteed is a pretty joyful film. He has potential as a filmmaker.

What movie did they use for Ben’s head nodding? If someone passed me that shot, I could do the test, with Jedi robes

Could you use the footage of Ben smiling after the kiss?

I don’t think it’s doable based on how much of a close up shot, as well as his face being slightly obscured by Rey’s. I think using this as inspiration would help out.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BlnRy7g--tU

I think the face is out of marriage story,
anyone know of clip can i catch it?

Not a clip specifically, but the shot at the very beginning of the official trailer for Marriage Story shows that there’s definitely something in the movie you might be able to pull from: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHi-a1n8t7M

EDIT: Just checked the movie on Netflix. The shot appears at about 11 minutes into the movie. He doesn’t nod like in the other video, but there is some movement.

I have been away for a bit … but one of the other things I would look into is the removal of the Dagger’s … pop out. I rolled my eyes HARD when that happened. It didn’t make any sense. Not only was the dagger made … it had an inscription of the location of the way finder (who the person made it know where it was located … so why “write” it down. Example: I know where my parent’s house is, but I don’t inscribe the address on the key copy I made) but HE CHOSE A SPECIFIC LOCATION OVERLOOKING THE DEATH STAR II’s LOCATION TO “POINT” TO THE LOCATION OF THE WAYFINDER!

That was too much.

As much as I would LOVE to remove the dagger … that probably isn’t possible. Instead, I think it would help to remove that “pop out” dagger scene when the crew is looking at the wreckage when Rey finds that detail to “line up” the design.

Instead, when she is looking out … couldn’t we simply add the Sith Whisper sounds when Rey is looking out? That way we recognize she is being guided by the dark side? We the audience know she is still “flirting” with the dark side, especially after the Last Jedi. She is kind of mirroring Luke’s footsteps in ROTJ where he wants to be full on Jedi, but he still has that temptation. Rey is a bit similar, albeit some differences … but she is looking for a Sith thingy, so she should be “guided” by that side.

Since we the audience, who have seen/watch Star Wars Movies would recognize those whispers and understand “Hey! that area is it!” without being told it.

Anyway, that’s my two cents.

I like that. Perhaps just show her pulling the dagger out of the bag, add the Sith whispers to the shots of her looking at it, but cut away before she pulls out the “line it up just right” thing.

jonh, I want you to send me some audio. You need to be included in this. It can just be a simple “Ship or crew or person name standing by”. If it weren’t already a ship name with crew to recognize I’d say “the Ghost” would have been perfect.

Poppasketti, FWIW (and I’m afraid the finer details may elude me), I like Option A’s trajectory and lightspeed jump but E’s little boost of the engines partway through. But I’m happy with whatever consensus emerges about the shot. Both are incredible.

Thanks to all with the audio submissions and getting appropriate effects onto them. We’re taking a liberty to expand them to the left and right channels rather than just the center. I like axlanian’s, as he kept my line placements more or less. Personally I don’t want to open with a prominent “9000 crew standing by”, not only because it’s my voice but because it’s a little too meta. So the line is there but it’s a bit buried. Could also be confusing, as though the whole informal fleet is being referred to as the ‘9000 Crew.’

So, the “For Skywalker” line had to be pruned, so further submissions should be check-in’s or other chatter.

And since it came up in Dom’s thread, in my head the primary version of this project will retain Rey Palpatine. This will be the conservative style that has served me well. But, I plan to release a Rey Nobody edit, perhaps at a later time, once that idea is completed by whomever, with an eye toward Dom’s project.

hahah I’ll be happy to send it to you … one thing, what exactly do I say? tell me and I record it!

You could make up a name for a ship and say “This is _____, standing by” or you could try to come up with a cool pilot quip about how they’re gonna win or something

“This is the Enterprise, standing by.”

If Ben resurrects Rey while Palpatine is distracted, you could always just cut away after Ben collapses and Rey shows concern. Then she stands up to face Palps and then after she defeats him, THAT’S when we see Ben and Leia fade away. That way we avoid having to add more ghosts to the scene. Might have to add some camera shake to Ben’s body disappearing though, since the entire temple is crumbling at that point.

Another Episode IX Rewrite

This is a detailed summary of my ideal Episode IX. My main inspiration was the Duel of the Fates script with some critical changes, but I also included a few references to The Rise of Skywalker. The page count of the summary comes in at 10 pages. I separated the plot into 3 acts to make things easier to read. So without further ado, I present:

I know many are in favor of holding back Palps for as long as possible, which I heartily agree with. I have wondered if anyone has attempted to keep his face out of frame and/or in silhouette for his first encounter with Kylo? I mean I know we already know what he looks like, but not in this film. Just in keeping with the idea of a slower unveiling?

I had an idea a while back where the opening sequence ends when Kylo finds the Wayfinder, then we continue as normal. Cut after Rey’s training sequence, and pick up with Kylo flying through space. End the Exagol sequence when we hear Palpatine say “I have died before.” Then use his conversation with Kylo as voiceover for other scenes. That way we don’t see his face until Rey confronts him.

Could the “Leia’s Theme” section of that trailer music starting at around :30 work for when Rey calls Leia’s saber to her? I think it might time out correctly so that it naturally leads into that Star Wars theme you’re using.

It might even work so that the piano version of “yoda’s theme” plays just as she’s saying “I am all the jedi.”

Ooooo that’d be really cool.

“We’ve decoded the message, and it confirms the worst. Palpatine has returned.”

But why would they have to “decode” a message that everybody just heard in plain English?

I say cut that line altogether. After the message plays, you can just skip straight to the characters saying “Do we really believe this?” and stuff.

The info is not about Palps, it’s can be about rumors of a hidden Imperial fleet. Or whatever else. Do we ever really see any messages in Star Wars except for Leia’s original one? 😉

To me that scene has always felt like it has been there to establish Hux’s role in the film.

Opening with the secret message scene is very reminding of a James Bond opening where we see him on the end of a different mission

Maybe it could be the Fortnite message? Could play it at the Resistance meeting instead of Poe saying his “Somehow” line. Everyone can be shocked at the same time.

Anyways, I really like your mockup. During the vision sequence, I would take out Kylo’s helmet fondling and instead have the TLJ shot of him from behind on the Star Destroyer, and we don’t see his face. That way the true reveal of him for this movie is still on Mustafar.

Here’s a rough test I did a while a go for that. This version of the broadcast establishes that Palpatine orchestrated the events of the past 2 films so that the Republic would be destroyed and Luke would be out of the picture, leaving the seat of power empty for Palps to take, unopposed.
https://vimeo.com/404134108

Ooooo that looks great! Obviously needs some work on the audio and editing, but I think it could work.

I feel like it is still better to not have vision scene or the TLJ bridge as I think that Kylo’s face reveal is very powerful in the original shot as our first look at him in this movie.

Dude I totally agree. It’s such an “establishing” looking shot of his face.

I was trying to figure out why moving the helmet scene to the beginning felt off. I think it’s this. What about if the TLJ bridge scene was included, but without the closeup of his face? Just use the shot from behind, and intercut it with the vision. Of course, we’d see his face in the vision but imo that’s okay since it’s from previous movies. Our first look at Supreme Leader Kylo Ren is still on Mustafar.

I’ve been lurking for a while, but I made an account because I wanted to let you guys know that you’re doing phenomenal work with this edit, and because I had some ideas to share.

How would everyone feel if Palpatine’s physical reveal was delayed until Rey confronts him? Just end the opening scene after Ren picks up the Wayfinder. Then, after Rey crushes BB8 with the tree, cut back to Kylo flying through space, his landing on Exegol, etc. and end the scene when he turns towards Palps and we hear the line “I have died before.”

To make up for the loss of the rest of the scene, include voice over snippets of the rest of their conversation in the scenes where Kylo gets his mask back and the Knights of Ren are walking through the halls. This would mean cutting out the Stormtroopers commenting on the Knights, but I don’t think anything of value is lost there.
