Pardon my suspicious attitude, but was ESB originally printed on Fuji stock?
Pardon my suspicious attitude, but was ESB originally printed on Fuji stock?
Just as a point of reference, the master for the 1980 AC/DC concert film "Let There Be Rock" was said to be lost for the longest time, only existing on VHS and possibly one or more worn-down release prints.
It was released on DVD & Blu-ray this year, fully restored from the original negative. The explanation?
The guy who shot the film refused to allow a release scanned from the negative which he possessed. His rights to it just recently expired.
So you never know what the heck's going on behind the scenes...
In any case, if that still from that idiot's thread really was fake, I'm outta here - none of the DC, GOUT, or 16mm projects interest me enough to stick around.
Theatrical or bust!
Well, what now?

Go gargle with some balls.
Don't turn this forum into this one (coarse language, viewer discretion is advised).

I just wish the mods hadn't deleted the post where I called him an abortion.
Please cut it out if you are serious about being taken seriously.

LOL, So you plan on selling this? to "pull in GREENBACKS'? and that image is TERRIBLE, when can we see 1080p motion sample?
He was being sarcastic in that last post...
Please lord, let this not be a troll who'll give us a video of XXX-rated material... ;(
This is a strange thread.
I'd better not get my hopes up - no pix, no pruf, no truf!
The last two posts make no sense to me. -_-
I think you're getting in over your head now. IMO, you shouldn't try and get information from DVNR'd sources. Even in low motion scenes, TONS of fine detail is getting covered up. No, not as bad as '04's extreme degraining, but pretty bad.
Stick to the JSC & smear-free '93, and IF you can find a way to make the official Blu-ray and the '97 SE (if it's found to be DVNR-free, of course) compatible with your processes, put 'em in too.
Also, stick to theatrical audio. SW Mono & Stereo, ESB Stereo & 6-track (as close as you can get), ROTJ Stereo. Keep it simple.
Of course SD laserdiscs are going to look like crap on a giant screen. The only reason for upscaling them is to bypass the terrible scalers found on many flat-panel TV's which turn SD content into a blocky mess.
We're doing this for the image content, not the image quality. Blending two or more discs won't perform miracles, but it could produce a result better than any one disc, maybe even better than the '97 SE or GOUT (with much stress on the "maybe" part).
But remember, we're now dealing with the best laserdisc player ever made, and with the discovery of the "smear-free '93", we now have TWO DVNR-less discs to source from. With the right tech, they very well COULD be blended into something quite worthwhile...
Heck, I use a 13" Hitachi made in 1978 for games & VHS.

All right, let's say you're not trolling. Here's what I honestly think you should do:
1. Capture the JSC, release that raw
2. Capture smear-free '93, release raw
3. Mix and match, do your whatever process if you think you can.
4. Attempt to merge the upcoming Blu-ray...
...although since the source is SO different, that might be more work than it's worth.
I love the white levels.
This disc has a very "real" look to it, IMO.
I prefer laserdisc, and even VHS to DVD, because although there's less analog noise, the colours are compressed. I bought the widescreen Faces VHS set, and although the resolution is terrible, both the saturation & range of colours seem better than the GOUT to me.
But maybe it's just the way my brain works. I much prefer colour over clarity...
I've been waiting for this for a while - an X0 project that could actually get FINISHED.
IMO, a proper restoration via an X0 capture is the next best thing to a 35mm scan, which has almost no chance of happening (for legal & financial reasons).
I love that you want to go for the theatrical colours. It'll be tricky, but definitely worth it!
I agree that the Def. Collection shouldn't be used, as not only has it been done already, but that set has DVNR. NO set with DVNR should be used, as tons of fine detail gets covered up.
JSC is a good choice, but I wouldn't overlook the smear-free '93. Yes, it has problems, but some of them might be caused by a poor capture, not the disc itself.
Might it be possible to combine those two sets Black Magic style? Maybe even blend a bit of the upcoming official Blu-ray?
Also, I must ask - will you be using the BNC output? (See post here dated 10-09-08, 03:40 PM)
