Harmy's STAR WARS Despecialized Edition HD - V2.7 - MKV (Released)
Time

Oh I agree, if you cant see it makes no odds. I was just trying to say it basically works this way, crap in crap out ie: if there's artifacts in the source you will see them no matter how great your gear is, thanks Mr Lucas. Its hard with Star Wars because you can only adjust its colors and so-forth so much, until some how we get a pristine scan of a pristine copy we'll have to put up with these niggles.

But once again i've never had an edition of Star Wars that reminded me of what it used to look like as much as this one.

Chaps, I think your getting the tech vs source artifacts argument upside down.

The higher the resolution dosnt make the artifacts dissapear, if there in the source you will see them and you'll actually see them more the higher the resolution you have and the bigger the screen you have.  If you have a 4K projector its up scaling everything ( there are no native 4K blu rays yet)  which inevitably introduces artifacts, however small or unnoticeable believe me they are there. Same with watching a 720p source on a 1080p display. You either have your player are your display doing the up scaling but its still up scaling. Yes the further away from the screen you sit the less you'll see I always recommend you sit at least 2 times the width of screen away from it or If you reduce the size of your screen the better the picture looks. If you still have an old crt tv which can take an hd source say via component inputs the picture looks amazing and pin sharp and not an artifact in sight. I still swear old crt tv's can beat any new lcd, plasma, dlp hands down for picture quality honestly.

The only way to watch a movie without any artifacts is to not watch it digitally at all ie: the "old way" with celluloid. Believe me I have qualifications in av and av installations and would give my left nut to have a 35mm projector set up.

Maybe not as good in a dress but in your own way.

I think we've got to realize that if reports are to be believed and Carrie will be in the new episode she will be in it in context of how many years have passed since the other episodes. I doubt very much that she will be wearing a gold bikini or playing up a sexy image, she will be playing the character of Leia in her later years as again if reports are to be believed, will the other original cast members.

I know I'm probably stating the obvious and I know a lot of whats being said about her looks is probably tongue in cheek but remember Carrie herself or members of her family and friends almost definitely visit this site so for the love of the original movies we should show a little bit of respect.

Just thought I'd say.

All jokes aside, I do have a VCR and it would be fun to transfer to VHS and see what it looks like on the old format. Although I'm not sure whether letterbox or fullscan would be better.

Believe it or not, i am actually making this right now!

I converted the movie to PAL 25fps with a 4% speed up. French audio/French crawl. But it's still quite interesting. I've created a DVD and i'm capturing it on a VHS. I will upload a sample here as soon as possible ;)

Edit: I'm using the V2.0 and i'm doing it in letterbox.

Analogue Lives!

Wow you've actually made me think of doing it too!

VHS forever!

I want a Betamax!

There was a guy on Youtube a while ago who did lots of Star Wars conversions some of them were very good, he used to take requests from members as to what movie and scene to convert, he said the whole thing was done using his "secret method" and he was trying to get movie studios to employ him and his method. Will try to find a link but theres loads of crap ones about on Youtube.

Ipd, I also have an Optoma HD65, it has served me well for years, and the replacement bulb was an incredible value... but I've just recently upgraded to a BenQ W1070, and the difference is very noticeable (let's face it, the '65 just isn't quite bright enough for pushing over 140 inches).  If you get a chance to upgrade to something similar, the brightness and contrast difference is a revelation.  Can't wait to do more than just spot check 2.1 on this beast.

Until recently I had the Optoma HD200x which gave full hd and a better picture but downgraded to get some mula for christmas:-( Damn you Santa) but for my setup the 65 does the job.

Anyway looks like all this projector talk is hijacking Harmys thread so thats all I've got to say about that:-)

Darksideoflite.

I too saw the Episode one conversion and yes had mixed feelings. I thought they could have gone further and was waiting for the "wow 3d" moment which for me never really happened. But I must admit I left the movie waiting to see the rest. I did several conversions of certain scenes from Star Wars just using different generic 3d conversion programs, which sometimes looked good but mostly failed.

If you can pull this off I'll be mightily impressed and I will wait with baited breath to watch.

^In my pictures you can see the black bars, they are part of the picture, using an anamorphic lens you set your projector to stretch the picture vertically which means the picture is using all the available pixels (dlp micro mirrors on mine) then the lens would stretch the picture horizontally, the upshot is no more black bars and your seeing nearly all of the available light from the lamp so a very bright and very filmic looking picture.

Youtoo...

To be honest in our house we cant watch movies on a tv anymore (tv is for tv the one you can see in one of the pictures is a 37") it really feels like you cant see the picture properly.Over the years Ive had loads of them, I'm a frequent buyer and seller on fleabay but I always seem to come back to Optoma ones, there easy to set up, have loads of picture adjustments to play with. They maybe dont have the most perfect picture but excellent for a budget home setup and they can be found for a fraction of the price of a sizable tv. I would recommend getting one as you really cant beat front projection for movies.

Guzpaz.

I disagree with your LCD vs DLP comments, I've had many lcd's and dlp's and for film viewing DLP always wins. Not just my opinion. I believe IDLA is currently the way to go for a serious setup but can be pricey.

Wow, lpd, those look great. I wish I could watch it like that. Thanks for sharing.

It would be fun to see pictures taken from projection of the same frames as the IB screening photos and see how they compare. It wouldn't of course be quite accurate as it depends greatly on the camera but it would just be fun to see :-)

Will have a go at it later. How do I shrink the pictures to fit better on the page?
