What is wrong with... Attack of the Clones? - a general discussion thread
Time

Getting away from all that.

I think that TPM and AOTC are one decent movie, padded out with stupid crap to make two. If the first film had been about Anakin and Obi-Wan and the start of the war, showing a corrupt and decadent Republic it would have been ok. AOTC suffers from such a weak starting point, that it never had a chance.

What do you want to happen in the the rest of the ST?
Time

I want Kylo to kill Snoke in the next film.

Rey as Luke’s daughter and an end to the whole Jedi can’t marry thing.

No Hayden or Ewan in the movies. Ewan can have a spin off but Hayden did too much damage to ever be welcome again.

I want to explore Leia and her decision to not become a Jedi.

More Finn and Poe bromance/romance. Maybe a triangle where Finn likes Rey, Rey likes Poe, Poe likes Finn.

I want to see Luke kick ass. Just once, show us how powerful he has become.

The biggest flaw in the Prequels is that we never saw Anakin and Obi-Wan’s friendship. In Clones they were apart for 80% of it and bitchy the other 20%.

The bad dialog, bad direction, bad acting (from people who can do better), bad special effects and the horrible digital medium it was shot on all add up to a crappy movie.

OP might be happier on the PTAS with the other tasteless plebs.

In what ways did TFA completely nail it, either in terms of filmmaking or in terms of continuity?
Time

I enjoyed how Poe was relatively angst-free in the movie. It made a nice contrast to Rey and Finn.

I liked when Finn shot the first TIE and it crashed, that scavengers immediately went for the wreckage because it was fresh meat.

The Chewie and the doctor exchange made me laugh.

Even though Mark Hamill’s role was limited, he managed to bring a lot with just one look. Pain, shock, apprehension and surprise.

Joonas Suotamo needs more recognition for the work he did on Chewbacca. His interview makes it sound like he actually cared enough to try and compliment Mayhew. It would have been way too easy to just put on the costume and half-ass it.

JJ and co took a lot of care into making the movie. It was the little things like getting Ackbar and Nein Numb’s original voice actors back. That little bit extra made the movie for me.

Discussion: Your latest star wars buys?
Time

My sister has a Disney Visa to earn money for when they go to the theme parks and since some of it was expiring she put it on a gift card and sent it to me. So I used it at the Disney Store and got.

George Lucas discusses letting go of Star Wars
Time

This sounds like a repeat of the stories about how he treated Marcia after she left him. I think he really expected the film to underperform and the public to come rushing back begging for forgiveness and putting the Prequels on a pedestal like he does.

I have a hard time giving him sympathy for the criticism. Had he released the OOT alongside his preferred versions in equal quality, there would have been less grief over the past decade. People could make their choice. He was too much of a control freak to do that.

This interview made me sad. You don’t bite the fans’ hand like this again. You don’t intentionally try and piss off Disney, when they have been civil to you. Maybe this will give JJ the push to tell us his real feelings on the Prequels and SEs.

Episode VIII : The Last Jedi - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

I’m excited for the new movie. TFA made me care about these new characters and I want to see what happens to them next. Even some controversial things, like Starkiller Base lead into interesting avenues to explore. The Republic is probably in disarray, it would be like if a dirty bomb exploded in the heart of DC while congress is in session. What is Luke like after years of exile, blaming himself for what happened? Will the romance be Rey/Finn, Rey/Poe or Finn/Poe?

Excited instead of worried about the future of Star Wars. I can live with that.

The Force Awakens: Official Review Thread - ** SPOILERS **
Time

I saw it Thurs night at 7:30 and again last night with my dad. I really liked it. The biggest thing that is did to fix the flaws of the Prequels was characterization and chemistry among the new people. Poe was my favorite, but I’m partial to X-Wing pilots. Maz was a cool addition, and her place seemed more like a pub/old fashioned inn vs a bar. My favorite line from her was calling Chewie her boyfriend.

I was very resistant to Luke only having one scene, but Mark Hamill managed to do more with one look than Hayden Christensen did with two whole movies.

Props to them for getting Ackbar’s voice actor back. That is a perfect example how much care and appreciation was put into making the movie.

Was it perfect? No. However, I care about those characters and I really want to see what happens to them next. As part one of three, thats the most important thing.

Well, I guess this does tell us that Chewie still weirdly off?

The eyes look more normal in other promo shots.

Got any pics or links?
He looks weird in the trailer and in every promo shot I've seen.

I doubt that Mayhew is in a lot of the pics/film released. He could hardly walk at Celebration even with the knee surgery. I think we are dealing with a new actor for Chewbacca in many scenes, hopefully one that can learn from Mayhew how to be Chewie.

If Disney ignores the prequels but keeps promoting the SEs, how are they going to explain who that ghost next to Yoda at the end of ROTJ is?

First of all, it's still Lucasfilm, not Disney at the wheel.

Secondly, at Celebration there was a lot of prequel love. There was a clear undercurrent of resentment toward the current OT focus.

I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before it resumes infecting the rest of the franchise. It's already started in the Marvel comics.

What were some examples of this?

The PT Appreciation Society got their panties in a twist.

The Boba Fett movie

Yeah, Disney doesn't really want to mention the PT. JJ goes out of his way to ignore it, barring the Jar Jar joke. The Disney Store Merch was all OT-based last time I was in there.

The PT era is over and some people just can't accept it. Notice how they never threw a fit nor offered sympathy when the OT was treated badly. Yet they want us to feel bad their Star Wars is gone. Cry me a river.

I hope they go for the rumor of Anthology Boba killing PT Boba and stealing his armor. It was like if they would have told who V was in V for Vendetta.

Are these the same people who are mad at Disney for the EU being rebranded as Legends? I can't keep track of all these factions anymore...

Nope, they are the ones who think that the ST is unnecessary because Star Wars is 1-6, aka the Tragedy of Darth Vader. They also want the Clone Wars brought back, because that is apparently necessary.

They are also the ones who dismiss any good thoughts on TFA as "nostalgia."

Good luck to the people that will have to wait forever, for vapourware and announcements of a hypothetical release.

Disney's silence is the best thing that has happened to the original Star Wars trilogy in a long time.

We'll be happily working on our own, and enjoying the results along with everyone else that has the patience to wait for it, and finally get to see Star Wars receive the respect and treatment it deserves.

Yet if only a very few people can get it, it becomes irrelevant. I have respect for what you guys do, but this isn't going to help. Saying Disney will never do it right is not going to make them want to try.

Look at Disney's approach right now. The worst of the PT/SE fans are lashing out against TFA teaser, which means they are scared. Emphasizing the OOT techniques at the main Celebration panel. Clive Revill was there.

It might take a while, but it is closer to happening now that it was since 2004.

On Chewies eyes, I'm not sure there's any doctoring, or it's incomplete. He has the same look in a Force for Change video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48dGX8zmK4I

I'm wondering if Peters vision is not what it used to be and he cannot wear contacts, or the original design is no longer comfortable at 70. There's also a taller guy in there in a black jump suit with eye black that might be a stunt double. He didn't appear to have blue eyes, but you'd think they would just give him blue contacts.

The growl also seems out of sync and too hard of a sound effect for a subtle mouth movement. I bet it's a generic placeholder from their sfx archives, and Han and Chewie were a last minute addition to the trailer.

Is it Peter's stunt double in the trailer? I know it is in the Force For Change video. Even with the knee replacement he has trouble walking and I'm afraid that they will need to have a new person learn from Mayhew to take over as Chewbacca. Especially if he is going to be a big part of the next two, which makes sense because everyone loves Chewie.

Can we really trust a company that has censored Fantasia and still uses "dubtitles" on the Studio Ghibli films to bring us a properly restored OOT on Blu-Ray? They still haven't even released Song Of The South on any video format!

Well, those were censored out of fear of offending people, so from the business perspective of a children oriented company I can understand (although I don't endorse) their decisions regarding Song of the South and Fantasia.

There's no reason to not release the OOT other than that they for some reason feel that it'd be a waste of time.

Or because Lucas was a cock-stain and put it in writing the OOT can never be released again.
