Yes I had. Kurosawa's 'Ran'. I'm no expert, but I'm guessing that this early edition was mastered using the same late 80's early 90's technology as the GOUT. What is the correlation between expensive soap and earplugs? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! What is the connection between 'Ran' and 'Star Wars'? Read on... George Lucas and F.F. Coppola helped Kurosawa get 'Ran' made. 'Ran' has since been given the ultra slick Criterion Collection two-disc all night spa treatment, with wet and wild super happy fun finish. While at the same time, Lucas is giving us this shut up and take it, prison shower style, dry handed reach around, with sphincter tearing anal invasion at no extra cost. The significance?? I DON'T KNOW!!! I just thought I'd mention it.

Lucas has sort of become like Bush. Shut up in his ivory tower, to high above us all to stoop to answering our pathetic little questions. "Let them eat laser disc masters..." he says through a mouthfull of turkey leg, while waving his ring laden hand at his servants. I guess like the war in Iraq, this is so infuriating because it could very easily have been avoided. What a waste of plastic this DVD is. Long after the human race is gone, this DVD will still be around, along with pop bottles, milk jugs, cockroaches, and Keith Richards. I hope that someday, someone will find a good use for it. Here are my suggestions, Mad Max/Waterworld mutant man... Plane signaler, coaster for your glass of filtered pee, break them into tiny bits for fishing lures, sharpen the edges and use like a ninja star, makeshift rearview mirror for your V-8 interceptor........

The war on terror could have been avoided if Clinton had taken Asama Bin Ladan into custody the five different times he had the chance to do so. His lame excuse for not doing so was that he didn't know whether he had the legal rights. What a load of bull. Bin Ladan is a terrorist who has know American rights and nothing concerning legal rights should ever have been brought into the matter. They should have strapped the sick bastard that Bin Ladden is, to a bomb and launched his ass to hell. I lost a cousin in the Pentagon plane crash and have seen a full video of a terrorist beheading of an American citizen (not the edited butchered versions on the news). Having experienced and seen the wrath of these terrorist, I think we should fight and keep fighting until the very last one of them is dead.

Psssst, the Path of 9/11 was made up bullshit by cowardly right wingers, Clinton never got the chance to catch Bin Laden even though he spent more money on counter-terrorism operations than any other President in history. The Chimperor on the other hand ignored a memo titled "Bin Laden determined to strike in U.S." and sat his ass down reading a book to kids while the towers fell. Also, you remind me of a character in Star Wars: "Wipe them out. All of them." It wasn't the good guys who believed in genocide.

Dude, you're not serious. It's well known that bin Laden was practically handed to Clinton many times, only to have either himself or the Secretary of State be unwilling to make a decision about capturing or killing him. Yeah, Bush screwed up too, but it seems that Clinton screwed up a whole lot more on this one.

The difference here, Randy, is that when people bitch about something in the PT or complain about a change in the OT, they aren't told "Shut up and accept it. It's part of Lucas' grand vision. It's the way it's suppose to be. If you don't like it, go away". We're not constantly praising or complaining about every little thing and even the people that are doing that aren't told to "shut up and go away".

I use to read some of the forums on TFN. Any dissenting at all was met with harsh criticisms of how you can possibly be against anything the "almighty Lucas" has decided to "bestow upon us lowly individuals". I'm sure most of the TFNers are more than grateful for the substandard DVD release, assuming they even want it. I'd bet most of them don't care for it at all since it's not remastered so "it looks like crap". "It's his movie. He can do whatever he wants to it and we should be grateful that we're getting anything". And they just keep on slurping it up.

BTW, I like Star Wars too. The OOT. Not the PT. Not the GOUT.

The Chewie thing is EU. Despite that, saving someone from slavery is far different from shooting someone in self-defense (you don't have to wait to be shot at to consider it self-defense). Luke and Obi-Wan were paying him originally. Sure, they didn't get to Alderran, but Han got them back to Yavin on the condition that he would be paid. Yeah, he's a good guy at heart, but he needs to go through some sort of character arc. Without that, he's just a flat good guy character. If he started as plain old good guy, he wouldn't have demanded to be paid to begin with. He would've just said "Nah, it's cool. I'll take you guys back and we'll call it even". There'd be no point to that since there's no character development. He needs to start off as a smuggler/mercenary and then transition to a full blown Rebel.

Yeah, I'm sure it would've made 400 million without the fans that saw it 10-20 times. Sure.

Same goes for these DVDs. If we, the fans, completely boycotted this thing, it would not be selling the way it is now. I bet I could mention these DVDs (2006 ones) to anyone else in my family and they wouldn't even know they existed. So yeah, it might make some money, but it wouldn't make nearly as much without the fans slurping it down like they do everything else LFL releases.

I for one am sticking to my guns. LFL doesn't get one more penny from me until they do a proper release. I'm tired of GL constantly tinkering in his quest for perfection (which is not attainable). What ever happened to moving on to other things after ROTS? He doesn't have anything else to move on to, so he's just going to keep re-releasing the same movies, year after year, until the end of time.

I agree with everything the guy said. Yeah, I'm still a fan at heart, but of the OT, not the PT. I'll never spend another dime on anything Star Wars. I also have a child on the way and I'm only going to be showing him my laserdisc captured DVDs of the Original Trilogy. The PT DVDs that I unfortunately own will be put away for about 20 years. Once he's old enough to realize they're crap, then I'll bring them out and let him see them. For now, the only trilogy that matters is the OT.

So there you have it. The unaltered release wont be on the box-set. I think it would confuse matters for Joe average if it was.
That still leaves the door open for an 'altered original theatrical release' though - as in a cleaned up one at some point. But I really think this is the only one we'll get for a year or 3.....

No offense, but Joe average isn't the one buying these DVDs. Despite what LFL says, this is the release for the truly hardcore fans, not the casual fans. The casual fan sees this and says "Didn't they release this 2 years ago? I'm not buying that again". The hardcore fan is the one that sees this and says "FINALLY!!!!" If this release wasn't for the hardcore fans, they wouldn't be saying "the fans asked for it and now they're getting it" in the marketing material and interviews. My sister would be considered Joe average and all she noticed about the SEs is that "something was different", but she didn't know what. To them, it's all the same thing.

Their market speak also leaves room for a hi-def unaltered release in the future, on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray (maybe even both).

And again, without a new transfer (from what?) there can be no HD or BR version.

DVD may be the last stop for the OT unless he cuts apart the original master negative again. (If you believed him the first time.)

Actually, isn't it "Own them individually for a limited time" which doesn't really rule out a future release. But what's really to stop him from just upconverting the current source to HD and sticking it on an HD or BR disc? It's obvious he doesn't care about quality, otherwise we wouldn't be getting a laserdisc master slapped on a DVD.

2006 OT DVD: Well today's the day...
Time
Why not just lock it and redirect everyone?

As for me, I won't be getting the new set, but I am going to pick up Lego Star Wars II. It's kind of funny, on the radio they mentioned how it seemed that Lucas had released a new set of DVDs every year. Considering that the first set came out in 2004 and another set will be coming next year, they were dead on. And I wouldn't put it past him to release another set in '08. What ever happened to wanting to move on from Star Wars?

Thanks, folks!

ADM's Clone Wars II.V is up on Demonoid and still has one seed. I think his other edits are over on myspleen.

But is that due to the media or NASA's increased paranoia? I'd say it's the latter. Ever since Columbia and the additional cameras, NASA's realizing that foam was coming off and damaging the shuttle all this time, they just didn't know it. Look at all the paranoia around returning the last shuttle to Earth. They ended up having almost no choice but to take the chance and hope it all held together, which it did. Still, it's been happening for how long and they're just now realizing it because they have cameras on there now.

We know that flying into space is dangerous. MeBeJedi is right. The public needs to face this fact and realize that while the loss of life is horrible, they know the risks and are doing it to further science. If we stop exploring space because we can't gaurantee that the astronauts will come back safely, we won't get anywhere.

9/11 5 years later
Time
I woke up to the morning news like I always do and they were talking about a fire at the WTC. No one on the west coast new a plane had hit. I remember surfing the net, just like any other morning, with the news playing in the background. Then, an explosion in other tower. They played the footage back and you could see the plane fly right into it. At that point, they knew it was either an accident or an attack, but they started heavily leaning toward an attack. Then (I don't remember how long later) the first tower fell. I watched it fall on live TV. Then I watched the second one fall on live TV. Every channel was on this and everyone was using footage from everyone else. Every website was covered with the news. I was very late to work that day and ended up not getting anything done. I just couldn't believe what had happened.

They started grounding planes everywhere and reports were coming in from all over about the other two planes. I remember talking to the accounting lady at work. Her grandparents were trying to get home (I think they lived in NY), but all the rental places were charging exhorbitant prices to rent a car (no one wanted to fly). It was a sad day all around. I don't think I'll ever forget that morning. Everytime I watch a 9/11 special or see any footage, I remember being in my room, watching it live.

The world changed that day and it would never be the same.

Lowest Priced OOT DVD Search.
Time
My local target doesn't even have it advertised, which I found to be quite odd. As for the tin at Best Buy, $9 extra for that doesn't seem so bad. I think it's $60 right now, but will probably go up in a week to $80 (the previous price that was listed). Then again, I bet everyones single price will go up after this week. They'll probably go back down the day after Thanksgiving and then again a week or so before Christmas.

I'm betting the tin at BB doesn't hold the DVD cases. It's probably just that, a tin that holds all the DVDs themselves. If anyone buys it, let us know whether it has actual DVD cases inside or just the DVDs in cardboard envelopes.

My local ads show Best Buy listing the price of the tin as $60. The individual movies are listed at $16.99 each on their website and are shown on sale. They're also listed as pre-order, so you wouldn't be able to do in store pickup until Tuesday. CC doesn't show the price at all anywhere. Target isn't even advertising them around here, so of course there wouldn't be a price listed.

So I guess depending on your area, the price may or may not be shown.

Because they don't want people to know their price (or their competition to know their price). They plain and simply want to get people into the store. By using the "low price" nonsense, they can gain customer interest while also not committing to a price, which may or may not be better than their competition's.

The ads I've seen have always shown the price. They usually show it either on the whole page ("All DVDs this page $20) or they'll have a circled price touching the DVD. Not showing the price really has nothing to do with them worrying about their competition seeing their prices. Every store has their prices set a week or more in advance and they're usually set by the headquarters, not the stores themselves, so there's not much that any store could do to adjust their prices anyway. The whole point of price matching is that once you're in the store buying other stuff, they'd rather have you stay in their store and buy it from them. Sure, they may not make as much money as they could have, but they're still making money on it.

Having the prices match between the store and online has become a far smaller problem in recent years, at least with Best Buy. I know they use to tell people "Well, that's the online price", but now they even have it setup so you can check store inventory, so it really is the same price (at least around here it is).

And besides all that, it's just as easy to call all the local retailers and ask them what they're price is before even going to the store. This is how they do they're price matching anyway. If you don't have an ad, they'll call the store you're trying to price match to and verify the price.

Didn't they try that with Jango banging his head on Slave 1 in AOTC? They used that to explain why the trooper bumped his head on the Death Star in ANH. Because as we all know, low vision in a helmet is genetic Just like how accents are genetic and not learned. You can't have it shipped from Amazon or some other DVD retailer? I'd personally wait for the '07 release at this point, but the remastered version should be available right now.
