STAR WARS: The Torrents thread

I figured with the amount of edits I've pulled off usenet and the spleen, this was the last I could do. I didn't create an nfo file or anything for it, since I don't know much in the way of technical details. If I need to put one in, I'll gladly do it if I'm given the details necessary. Of course, if ADM does mind and wants it removed, just let me know and I'll remove it right away.

Is this still on Demonlord anywhere? Are the torrent files for ANH and ROTJ "Reinventing the Wheel" not working for anyone else on Demonoid?

It looks like the Clone Wars aren't being seeded on Demonoid anymore (they were being seeded on Friday). The other torrents look like they're working just fine. Keep at it, maybe someone can seed Clone Wars.

Excited to see it!

I don't "get" that Deleted Magic cover Darth has gotten, but uh okay. I think these docs need something different than your usual crappy painting.

I don't get it either, but where's the love for Dave Dorman's art? I've always loved his paintings and I think these covers look fantastic!

For him it was and is probably the end of a franchise .... also, Joss Whedon can be very mean to his characters. Cordelia, Anya, and Tara, anyone?

=(

He responds in kind to the way he's treated. Seth Green anyone?
Hmm?

Before Willow went gay, Seth had complained to Joss about his character not having much to do. Joss was going to give him more, but didn't get the chance since Seth just decided to take off. So Seth goes off to find a way to keep from going all wolfy (read: leaves the show for a while). Then, Seth decided he wanted to be back on the show for a few episodes. So Joss brought Seth back ("I found the cure!"), but made Willow gay so she wouldn't want him. That, in turn, made Seth's character obsolete (he now gets angry when he smells Tara on Willow).

Granted, most of this is on the commentary (I think) of the Buffy DVDs and I don't have Seth's side to compare against, so I have no idea if this is how it really went down. If you watch the show with a careful eye though, it all kind of fits. Joss might be willing to kill you off on a project, but he'll also remember you and call you up the next time he needs you. Look at FireFly. Gina Torres and Mel were both on shows of his (Gina was on Angel, Mel was in the finale of Buffy).

I don't know much about the Cordelia thing other than that whatever she did, it really screwed up the story and they just had to write her out. Whatever else happened probably wasn't helped by WB pulling the rug out from under them. Everywhere I read and heard, their ratings were fine, WB just didn't want the show anymore. I fully expected Smallville to get the axe next with the way things were going. It's the only show left on "The CW" that isn't "teen angst drama".

As for Joss talking a lot, that's probably dead on. I think the problem is that he has a lot of ideas and wants to do a lot of things all at once, but there just isn't enough time. It took him a year just to get the last issue of Fray out simply because he had too many other things going on (Buffy, Angel, and one other I can't remember). It wasn't really until toward the end of Buffy that Fray finally came out. It seems like he can really only handle 1 or 2 projects at a time. As soon as you add a 3rd project (tv show, comic, movie script, etc, etc) things start either getting delayed or turn crappy.

Quickpar just verifies that all your rar files are intact. If any are missing or corrupt and you have enough par files to repair them, you can do that with a click of a button. Assuming all your rar files are ok, you can use WinRAR or IzArc or pretty much any archiving program that supports rar files to open the rars. Just open that .rar or .r01 file (might be able to open any of them, I've never tried that) and extract the contents to a folder on your hard drive.

If I remember LotR history correctly, Tolkien had a basic idea for the King of Gondor returning and the fall of Sauron, but he didn't work it into a story until the publishers, who wanted a sequel to the hobbit to make money with, liked his ideas along those lines. Then, through the writing out of the story, Tolkien invented many of its beloved subjects and events.

As for Star Wars, again if I'm not mistaken, it was originally pitched to 20th Century Fox by Lucas in a way where the toy sales would help to increase profits so the marketing existed in the franchise before the first movie was released. Plus, all movies are items meant to be marketed. Though I would guess that marketing was less important to Lucas than art in those days. Maybe.

I believe that Tolkien also had his son reading the book as he wrote it. That helped to catch any discrepencies that might have existed. Each time his son found something wrong, he'd go back and rewrite the story. Once it was published though, it was a done story. Tolkien never released a special edition to change the story

I'm willing to bet that was something Lucas threw in there just to get them to fund it. Remember, they let him keep the rights to everything (except maybe distribution). Sequels, merchandise, and whatever else there is was all left to Lucas. Let's face it, in those days, toys based on a movie weren't that successful. Sequels were practically unheard of at the time. Fox figured they had nothing to lose by letting a young Lucas keep the rights to everything. Something like that will likely never happen again either. In fact, look at Firefly. Fox won't give up the movie rights to that, so they had to title the movie Serenity. As much as Fox doesn't plan on doing anything with it, they want any money that might be made from it.

What you're failing to understand Gomer is that Star Wars was not created with marketing in mind. It was created as a modern myth. It wasn't until after the first movie was hugely successful that suddenly everyone wanted the toys that started to show up. That's how it was until the PT came along. Then it was toys and all sorts of other crap before the movie even opened. I remember it very well because I was practically a Taco Bell addict during the months leading up to the movie, but then I didn't eat anymore Taco Bell for nearly a year afterwords (I was sick of the food). I also remember not being able to walk into any store that carried toys (Walmart, Target, K-Mart, TRU, etc, etc) and not find pegs filled with Jar Jar. It was nothing but Jar Jar down the whole stinking aisle. At least with the OT, there were always several different figures that could be bought (I remember it vaguely, but I remember it).

No they weren't. They were sold as mass marketed product. They were created to give a world to the language Tolkien had created. He knew that a language with no one to speak it was useless. So he created a world where the inhabitants spoke the language he had created.

I'm not sure about the title for ROTK, but I know the title of TTT is ambiguous. Even Tolkien didn't really know which two towers the title referred to. Was it Minus Tirith and Minus Morgul or was it Saruman and Sauron's towers (the proper names are escaping me at the moment)? To some it's the former, to others the latter.

boris, you don't get it and I don't think you ever will. Cleaning up a movie and doing color correction is not the same thing as changing a scene (Han vs Greedo), adding a scene (Jabba in ANH), or adding frivolous items to a scene. Sure, most of the frivilous items don't change the story, so why put them there? The Han/Greedo scene does change Han's character, no matter how much people say it doesn't.

The point is that doing a straight digital restoration and claiming that the 1997 SEs are the same thing as a digital restoration is just plain false.

You're right about one thing though. GL should release the 1997 SE for the people that want that version. Maybe one day we'll get a giant box set that'll include every version of Star Wars ever released. Of course, Lucas will have to rerelease it every year as he makes more and more changes.

I just got mine today and just finished watching it. It looks fantastic! It's to bad it's only the cut scenes, but I still think it looks terrific! I'm sure that if actual gameplay were included, it would've taken far longer to complete.

I'll be seeding this on the spleen to help out and PiF to the first 2 people to PM me (US only please).

Awesome job guys!

Idea: an X 3 edit...

X-Men 1.5 is a two disc set which features DTS sound, branching behind the scenes vignettes & deleted scenes during the movie, commentary, a few hours worth of documentaries, and other goodies.

And yes, X2 was originally released as a 2-Disc Special Edition. That was before Fox started playing their little games. It might still be available, but I usually just see the single disc re-release floating around these days (which I assume is just disc one of that set).

A word of wisdom for anyone that cares about special features: if the initial release of a blockbuster movie isn't a 2-disc set or isn't loaded to the gills with extras, you can bet there's a special edition coming out in a few months. These days, a commentary and deleted scenes is considered a bit light.

Argh!!! At first I figured the collectors edition was the 2 disc set. Then I noticed that it kept only saying it had one disc and an "exclusive" comic. Then I figured that I didn't want the comic, but I didn't have X 2. So I returned the collectors edition and picked up the trilogy. I already have X 1, but I can just as easily sell my extra copies. I would have thought that with 21 deleted scenes and 3 alternate endings that they wouldn't need to release a 2 disc set. In my mind, since I heard about the 21 deleted scenes, if they were going to "double dip" later, they'd only release half of the deleted scenes and maybe 1 alternate ending, leaving the rest for the 2 disc set. It's all very annoying and just gives my wife more ammo for her "see, I told you to wait" line.

Hopefully I can get rid of my 2 extra copies of X 1 fairly easily.

Idea: an X 3 edit...

Speaking of two disc sets (and of course I read about a 2 disc set of X 3 after I pick up the X-Men trilogy box set at Costco *sigh*), does anyone know what the differences are, if any, between the original release of X-Men, X-Men 1.5, and the copy of X-Men that comes in the box set I picked up? It looks like the one in the Costco set is the same as the original release, which is just a little annoying since I think X-Men 1.5 had more featurettes.

So is there actually a 2 disc set of X-Men 2 out as well? This crap gets more and more annoying.

There's plenty of good answers here, I just want to add something about Parsecs.

For the longest time, Lucas said Han was just blowing smoke at Obi-Wan in an effort to impress him, but Obi-Wan sees right through it (look at his face and reaction during that scene). Then, some EU author decided they would explain this off hand remark and everyone started to believe that explanation, mostly because they think it makes more sense. I for one don't think it needs an EU explanation and I don't think it was a writer screwing up. I think Han was trying to impress Obi-Wan. Again, watch Obi-Wan's reaction and then watch what Han does. Immediately after that he says "She's fast enough for the old man" like he knows he's been caught by him.

Anyway, that's my take. I don't have anything else to add though.

Really? I know for a fact that Foxtel and Sky are both developing the ability for their set top boxes to download episodes and movies directly from the satelite to save to the STU, and then view - at any time. I think that the technology will pay off, because it enables you to sit down at the TV, and beam down the show you want to watch when nothing's on. It's a great idea, and it will work. From what I've heard, they both plan to release this technology within the next few years.

Really? Here in the states, anything that's pulled into your cable or satellite box has a time limit on it (watch it within 3 days or can only be watched 3 times or whatever). What you describe sounds like it would pay off, as long as they have every movie currently available on DVD, including all the new releases. A lot of times cable and satellite companies have only a limited selection, at least here in the states, so you have to wait until they have what you want in order to watch it with VOD or, once again, go out to the store and buy/rent it.

What I described is a long way off here in the states because the media companies keep getting involved by making demands on how, when, and for how long people will be able to watch the episodes or movies. Even now, episodes like Prison Break are available to watch online at the same time the episode airs, but I'd rather be watching Prison Break on my 50" tv than my 17" LCD monitor. And I'd personally rather watch Prison Break (or whatever tv show) when I want, so I record it to my DVR, but that's not VOD or downloadable, that's simply time shifting.

your buying the PT all over again in Blue ray !!!!!!!!
Time
The battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD will continue until someone gets a reasonably priced player to market that can play both. Once that happens, the battle is over because it won't matter what format the movie is in. That's what happened with DVD+/-R and it'll happen again with Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. This is not Beta vs VHS all over again. The tapes weren't even the same size and they needed different read heads. This is DVD+/-R all over again and all they have to do is put another laser into the players. People were burned once (VHS vs Beta), they won't be burned again.
