They're only $30 now? They were $40 when I bought mine (that was two years ago though).

Kaine, my comment wasn't meant to be BS. As Jambe has said, it's not really unfair for him to do PAL only releases if he doesn't have the resources (time, skill, etc) to do NTSC releases. My comment was in regards to it being only a PAL release. I'm sure that with time, someone will convert it to NTSC for those people that don't have players that can handle PAL.

It's not fair that he creates a version that he can watch himself first? Tell your friends that they can only watch it on their computer for now, but as soon as there's an NTSC version, you'll give them that so they can watch it on their TV.

There's really no reason why anyone in PAL land should create an NTSC version first. That makes no sense at all. That would be like asking someone in NTSC land (the US) to create their edits in PAL first so the UKers can watch it with no trouble.

EDIT: There I go taking to long to post again. I'm sure an NTSC version will be out soon enough kaine. Once someone gets a copy that can do the NTSC conversion, it'll get done and then distributed. It just takes time.

Awesome! Glad to see this is completed. I definitely look forward to getting a copy via Rapidshare, Usenet, or torrent (probably Usenet and then seed the torrent from there ).

I've honestly never noticed the jaggies in a PAL release (maybe because I didn't know they were there). I've got a 50" widescreen tv, but I'm usually back 15-20' away from it. I wouldn't mind having both NTSC and PAL formats though, but I want this as soon as possible, so I'll get the PAL release first.

Thanks for all your effort Jambe!

Paint Wars: A New Hope
Time
I'm sure Zig will be back at it again once summer break comes along. Afterall, he'll be bored and looking for something to do. Then, once the fall semester starts up, he'll abandon it again.

And the cycle will continue.

Now, in all seriousness, I've loved this project every step of the way. I think it's a great re-imagining of our favorite movie. I'd rather see it put on hold than abandoned all together (I suspect that's what'll eventually happen anyway), but if it really does get abandoned then it was fun while it lasted.

Have fun at college. Hopefully you won't get distracted by something there and end up dropping out.

24 The Game - Cut Scenes Fan Edit (by daveytod) (Released)
Time
Has anyone here completed this yet? I only ask because the number of peers keeps going down, but the number of seeds isn't going up. In fact, the number of seeds doesn't seem to have increased beyond just me, yet I know that a couple of people have completed this (may not be from here). I plan to continue seeding this until I've reached a 1.0 ratio unless you guys need it longer. Since we're coming up on the weekend, I should hit 1.0 by tomorrow.

I do see that there's now 2 seeds (me and someone else I believe). That's a bit of a welcome relief.

Actually, the "good name brand" players are usually the least capable players. That is unless you go to a place that specializes in selling region free players. A friend of mine got a player that can change region codes for $300. I got a Cyberhome that can do the same thing (requires pushing a few more keys on the remote) for $40. Plus, mine can play everything except divx files.

I do see your point, I just don't usually give it much thought these days. Everything I've ever tried has worked fine in my player. That is except Underworld: Evolution. That DVD worked fine until the last 5 mins of the movie. Froze up at that point. But it worked fine in my PC. Yeah, thanks a lot Sony. That's one more movie I'll have to make a copy of before watching it.

Info: A note about Spence Edits
Time
Sorry to hear that spence.

I personally always looked forward to seeing your edits on Demonoid. Rapidshare's kind of annoying unless you have a premium account.

I know what you mean about the comments though. I seed everything I get 2:1, but most people don't even do 1:1.

Do you plan to seed the spiderman torrent you've already posted or will it just go straight to rapidshare? Either way, I look forward to seeing it

Anywhere to keep up on news, or gossip about the archival editions coming?

Yeah, but if the next set is going to be in the next-generation high-definition format, they're going to want to release the Special Editions in that format, since we don't have them in HD yet (aside from rips of the HD showings on television). And if LFL views those editions as the "definitive" editions of the films, I would think that those would be the ones they would want to ensure got the HD treatment.

Take care,
Sojourn

Except that there's still a format war going on. If they truly plan to release a 30th anniversary ginormous box set, they'd be best releasing it either on regular DVD or having one box set being HD and the other being regular DVD, but both have the same content. Until one format comes out a clear winner, or a player is released that can play both, they'd be taking a huge risk in releasing any of the SW movies in HD. Considering how long it took Lucas to release any of the SW movies on DVD, I'm willing to bet they don't put it on any HD formats in the near future.

Wasn't the Yoda landing just a cut scene on the ROTS DVD? I think ADM reinserted that scene on his fan edit of the movie. So if Rick is telling us they'll be rereleasing ROTS and essentially just adding the cut scenes "into the movie", I see no reason to repurchase ROTS.

EDIT: Message edited to correct a misquote.

what if sw ended?
Time
The end? No, at least not for me. Even right now, SW isn't really dead to me. If Lucas were to release the OOT completely remastered it might renew my faith in the man, but that's about it. I continue to enjoy the originals to this day. I just don't watch the SEs or the PT.

It won't matter if SW is ever released on a hi-def disc or completely remastered. It'll live as long as we want it to. As long as someone continues to enjoy going to that galaxy far far away, it'll always be alive.

No explanation needed. Inflection and tone are difficult to get through text though without the use of smilies (which you finally used in that post).

I'm really happy for zig though. I'm glad he was able to contribute something so awesome to himself and make himself so happy. Great going Zig!

I must admit I was a little disappointed when he decided to use DVD quality rather than divx, because divx is so much more detailed. You honestly can never match divx quality. It blows old DVD out of the water any day of the week, or the month for that matter. You don't have to explain to me what he is doing. He explains it himself quite clearly. I really hope he goes ahead with his menus. But it sounds like he might have to do away with them inorder that he is able to finish this project. I for one cannot wait. With or without the menus, this is perhaps the finest and most ambishous attempt at film preservation I have ever witnessed!

You do know that the AVI versions are just the DVDs recompressed, right? In that case, they aren't going to look any better (and probably worse) than the original DVDs. That is unless he's going to spend thousands of dollars and go through the AVIs frame by frame like the XO project is doing. Since he stopped the "Paint Wars" project, I doubt very much that he plans to do that.

As far as he's said, he's not taking any hi-def captures and putting them on a DVD. And I wouldn't call this a preservation attempt. Converting retail DVDs to AVI and then back to DVD is hardly preservation. It's more like an exercise in how not to do something.

Remember you cannot add quality. Unless he has a source with more detail, converting the DVDs to AVI will do nothing. I very much doubt he has a source with higher detail, especially considering that he's telling us he's converting the RETAIL DVDs.

Fantastic way to get past the copy protection really. Also, you would have found the quality to be ideal for archiving. Too bad the other members talked you out of this method. Well, good luck on your preservation attempt. I shall be looking forward to seeing how this one ends.

Is this a joke? I really hope so since the quality would be worse than the original and he's not even doing any editing. He's taking straight copies of DVDs that are available at retail and offering them up to anyone that wants them. Hello? Can we say piracy much?

Doesn't it all make perfect sense now? He wants to contribute something (albeit something that seems completely useless) to make himself feel like part of the community.

Why not make up some covers or offer to seed torrents or get involved in a PiF chain? Any of those would probably be more useful to the community than this.

If you really want to do this, you should get the DVDs (not the AVIs), strip the existing menus, and create your own. It still seems like a waste of effort (creating new covers would probably take just as much work and would probably be more rewarding).

The Fair Use statute covers "criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research" - of which none of what happens here falls under. The fact that such items are not "obviously" covered by said statute (107) means it could certainly be taken to court and made an arguement of.

That said, the best case scenario is that you simply lose money by mounting a defense by hiring a lawyer.

It's so nice of you to include only a portion of the statute. Here it is in full:

§107. Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use

Notwithstanding the provisions of sections 106 and 106A [17 USC § §106 and 106A], the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright. In determining whether the use made of a work in any particular case is a fair use the factors to be considered shall include--

(1)
the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
(2)
the nature of the copyrighted work;
(3)
the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and
(4)
the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

The fact that a work is unpublished shall not itself bar a finding of fair use if such finding is made upon consideration of all the above factors.

I think you'd find that a fan edit would fall under non commercial use and the fact that you have to have the original in order to even make a fan edit would actually increase the market value of the work. The statute also covers making a personal backup for your own use. It could be argued that a fan edit is nothing more than a personal backup (especially if you're only ever watching that copy, even though you own the original). You could probably also argue that by making a fan edit, you are in fact making a comment or criticism on the original work. It could also be argued that you did it for teaching purposes (to teach yourself how to edit a movie together). As others have already stated, the law is actually pretty gray about what those terms mean (they don't define comment, criticism, or teaching).

The point is, the only time anyone here is treading close to the line of "bootlegging" is when they distribute a copy of their fan edit, for free, to anyone that wants it (again, those people are suppose to own the original work). The act of creating a fan edit, for ones own personal use, is not in itself illegal.

P.S. Of course no one here would go to court without a lawyer, but I doubt any judge would be willing to accept a case based on someone editing a movie for their own use. You bought the DVD. If you want to cut everything but the opening sequence, you're free to do it, as long as you don't attempt to resell that as the original work. Of course, if you were distributing copies in a market that had no existing copies of the original work, you might get in trouble (case in point, the original Phantom Edit), but that's also probably a case of the studio will be distributing copies for sale later, so you'd be infringing on that (and that's assuming that everyone that got a copy didn't later go out and buy it when it came out on DVD).

The question is - would you rather be hiring a defense attorney because you were caught bootlegging - or because you were using a copyrighted property without consent of the owner?

Fair use still exists in the US. You do not need the consent of the copyright owner in order to make a fan edit. While it might be necessary to get permission to give that edit to someone else that also owns the original movie, I think you'd find that a judge would simply demand that the "other party" simply show proof that they own the original work. Selling a fan edit for any profit beyond the cost of materials would most certainly get you in hot water since at that point you're making money off someone elses copyrighted work.

Stop spreading FUD about copyright. I do not have to get GL's permission if I wish to replace every blaster sound in Star Wars with the sound of a fart. You sound like an *AA agent everytime you spread this bs about "needing permission".

There is a line between fair use and bootlegging and judges have ruled on it in the past.
